  1. Thanks for replies. Would Dakota 10 be a decent basic GPS for paperless geocaching?
  2. I guess, I am getting tired of bringing my Triton to work so I can load caches. There are some instances where would be nice to just load few caches directly from my Mac which is the only computer at home. Are there any GPS receivers that play nicely with Mac? My main requirements are: ability to load Google maps (or any street maps) for bicycling and paperless geocaching support. I do not need topo, compass, built-in camera, etc. I am only interested in GPS units that have native Mac software. No Bootcamp/Parallels stuff. Thanks.
  3. It is good that you did not lose any money in the deal. As to the situation, I think seller wasn't fair. If I have more than one person interested in whatever I am selling, I am contacting first in line and usually give 24 hour window to reply/pay. If I do not get e-mail back or the payment, I contact next in line. I think sending you an invoice and then revoking it is not fair. You had written agreement to purchase his/her goods which should be honored by both parties.
  4. Whatever you do, please mark the difficulty accordingly and make sure there can be no accidents when retrieving the cache based on your description. 50ft drop is not something many of the beginner geocachers should be playing with.
  5. I have Triton 200 for sale as I just upgraded to T400. It comes with USB cable but I do not think I have the original box anymore. The screen has few light scratches but they are invisible when GPS is on. Case is in excellent condition. All buttons/features work 100%. It has the better basemap loaded. I bought it new and used to find about 50 caches. Very good first GPS. You can load Google maps (street, topo) on it easily and for free. Price: $50 shipped (using the USPS $4.95 flat rate box).

  9. Looking for Triton 400 GPS. Let me know condition and your asking price when replying. Thanks.
  10. It is this time of the year again when I take my bicycle mount GPS on it and go geocaching. This Saturday (06-11-09) I am planning on exploring River Vale, Hillsdale and Park Ridge (Northern NJ). There are 15 caches in 12 square miles area. Goal is not to find them all but to have a great time. If anybody wants to join me, feel free to PM me. I plan on starting around 8:00am. I am taking my hybrid bike so there is going to be no racing You can find the cache location by using geocaching.com search using Google maps feature and enter "piermont ave and cedar ln, hillsdale, nj" in the Zoom To Address field.
  11. I have like new Magellan Triton 400 for sale. Unit was started only twice. Still has the protective plastic cover on the screen. Scratch free. Comes with everything (lanyard, CDs, quick guide, USB cable) but no box. I have upgraded it to the latest firmware and put the better basemap on it. I bought it to upgrade my T200 but decided that I do not really need the expandable memory feature. Price is $130 shipped within continental US via USPS.
  12. I am using the map screen to zero out on a cache. Works pretty good for me. I think you can also use the compass view where the green arrow will be North and the small black one is the cache location. I haven't used that screen so I do not know if there is a way to see the actual distance to the cache.
  13. No problem. Good luck with your T5 and caching.
  14. I am using the GUI version of CMConvert so it does everything automatically (it puts the PDB file on the list to be synched). I guess command line version will not do it. But once you synch the PDB file to your Palm, just open CacheMate and you will be asked which database you want to import the data into (so make sure you create one before).
  15. Get CacheMate for Palm. It is only $8 and well worth it. It is a database which has very nice features (search, description, hits, logs, etc). CMConvert is Windows application with GUI that converts GPX file into Palm PDB. It is just drag and drop to convert. I am also on a Mac but I use CMConvert at work because I found it extremely easy to use. I think they have command line version for Mac.
  16. What application are you using on Palm? I use CacheMate for cache database and CMConvert to convert GPX file(s) into PDB database. Once hotsync is done, I just open CacheMate and it recognizes new file automatically and asks me which database I want to import the new data to. I am using TX but the procedure is pretty much standard for all Palm based PDAs.
  17. Warning, If you ride to it, Its all UP hill to it! I did all the time when I was a teenager, but now I didn't think I could to it. But I would love to. If I can't make it uphill, I will walk the bike and I will certainly have a great time going back as it should be all downhill :-) Now I just need a idea for this Saturday's trip. I think I am going to hit west. Just not sure exactly where.
  18. I can always create a nice route down by the beach and I can call it "All Day Bikini/Caching Trip". Just let me know when are you going to be in my area :-)
  19. Make sure, you check the logs. Past entries with :-( faces will most likely indicate missing cache.
  20. Older GPSr units can lose signal under tree cover. They are also slow in acquiring signal but if you are patient enough, they should be OK for geocaching. The truth is, that you really only need the arrow pointing you in right direction. Did you try to find only one cache? It is possible that either this cache was hard to find or simply muggled. Pick an easy cache and give your GPSr another try. If that fails, then just upgrade to a newer unit (make sure you get high sensitivity receiver).
  21. I am in Leonia (close to Fort Lee and GWB). Nice observatory near the cache site you linked to. I guess I am going to check it out one day on my way back from my father.
  22. I started geocaching when my kid was about 10 or 11 months. I picked the caches in public parks so I could take my kid to the swings and then for an easy stroll to find the cache. My wife also joined us so she could stay with the kid while I enter the bushes looking for the cache. It was fun for all of us though I am the only active geocacher in my family. I see why somebody would like to keep the kid out of the woods but depending where you live, there are a lot more safe geocaches that could be found on a Sunday stroll.
