  1. it was a tongue in cheek comment, I promise I have spent a lot of time in the states and I'm very fond of Americans, I have even dated a couple (neither of whom, to the best of my knowledge, brought any weaponry out with them, but of course it could have been concealed ) but yes, my nervousness around guns stems from lack of exposure to them over here, and long may that state of affairs continue I would contend that it is your unfamiliarity with guns is what scares you, not us Americans. Understanding the hard facts of concealed weapon carry and then researching the history of why this right was written into our constitution in the first place will help you immensely in this regard. Perhaps you might even consider the day when your country needs some real help and what country will proudly be there by your side faster than you would ever imagine they could be. What if we showed up to protect you with sticks? Along this journey you may even learn to appreciate us a little more. We promise to put a little effort into doing the same.
  2. eek you Americans scare me I had the gun chat once with a taxi driver in Miami, I was telling him how scared I am of them and could never touch one, and he calmly leaned over and opened his glove compartment and there was a HUGE hand gun. I screamed like a girl while he nearly wet himself laughing. I stuttered "is-is-is-is-is-is i-i-i-i-it loaded????" and he laughed and said "of course it is, what use would it be if it wasn't???" Sometimes I'm glad I live in England
  3. oooooh I LOVE those maille keyrings - I have just recently got into maille and have made a few pieces, but I am still slow at it, all that lot would take me years Please come caching in England and leave a few for me to find
  4. I am usually Flo everywhere internetty (alhough my name is Sarah, it makes sense in my universe ) but I knew when I set up my account on here that I couldn't just use my usual handle, as I would rarely be caching on my own. So I needed something that could apply to whatever friends and family I managed to drag along each time, a team style tag. both I and my other half are ex punks, and something anarchic seemed appropriate, plus I wanted something alliterative, so the Chaos Crew was born....
  5. John (too tall or otherwise), love your eraser carving avatar. I used to really enjoy making my own stamps, but eventually I succumbed and bought a machine to do it for me (you can see some examples here) As for signature trade items for geocaching....I've been thinking about this. Making things has been my hobby much much longer than this has - I only very recently discovered geocaching, on a forum about making things So I figure I should be able to come up with something really cool for a signature item. As yet, though, my mind is a blank. I did order 50 brooch backs the other day from ebay, I was thinking of maybe making a bunch of Signal the frog pins out of polymer clay, maybe, or shrink plastic. My son can't be the only kid out there obsessed with that frog As with all these things though, it's finding the time....that's time I could spend caching
  6. if you guys are doing this again this year, totally count me in (and I want #17 please..... )
  7. I blog, and read a lot of other people's blogs, and started seeing this geocaching thing popping up on a few blogs about 6 months to a year ago. It looked a little too close to hiking to immediately leap out at me as being a good fit for my family, and I thought the GPS unit would be expensive, and not desperately useful for anything else, so I kind of passed on it for a while. but then I saw more and more people raving about it on blogs and forums, and their enthusiasm was infectious. Couple this with the fact I want to get a bit more exercise myself and for my kids, and one day I just thought, yup, I'm going to give this a go. Only 3 finds in so far but the whole family is already hooked
  8. I have had a good read of their website already, but it didn't tell me all I needed to know. I will contact them directly, and also other local "hiders" (good idea, thanks keehotee), and will post the results on here to help others in a similar position cheers all Sarah
  9. yup I saw your thread, your earthquake epicentre idea is cool my worry is that I'll get some little jobsworth at the local council (and I used to work for the council, so don't tell me they aren't out there lol), and I'll explain myself badly and not only get the door slammed in my face, but ruin it for everyone else!
  10. Hi people I want to go out and find a few more first, but am already thinking of where to hide my first cache, like you do I'd like to do one specifically for the young uns out there - like my 5 year old - who are enjoying this hobby with mum and/or dad To that end I'd like to do a puzzle cache, but a very easy one that the little 'uns can take part in - with a well stocked box at the end of it with lots of the nice little toys that my son loves to find - and close to something else that the kiddies will enjoy like a playground etc. I need it to be close to my home so I can check on it often and make sure it is always loaded up with nice goodies, and is in good condition and nothing has been left in it that isn't kid-friendly. there is a little park close to me which is perfect, and there are no other caches registered there yet. Trouble is I don't have the foggiest idea how I would go about obtaining permission to place a cache there, or who to ask. I assume the place is maintained by my local council, does anyone have any suggestions as to the best department to contact etc? and what to say to them to maximise the chances of them saying yes? I have already checked the list of existing UK agreements on a different webpage and my council isn't listed... any advice would be welcomed Sarah
  11. thanks tons guys, you've given me loads to go on I have now booked my internal flights with WestJet, so that's one less thing to worry about a lot of the places you have recommended are areas I wanted to visit anyway, so to combine them with some caching will be just perfect 2 weeks and counting, very excited about my trip
  12. hi there guys 2 weeks tomorrow I'll be landing in beautiful Van City with my 5 year old son We have a week in Vancouver followed by 5 days in Edmonton and 2 days in Calgary The main focus of our trip is hockey Go Canucks Go!!! but in between the games, we would LOVE to get some caching done In Van we will be staying in the ents district downtown, and will have no car. I would really appreciate any recommendations for child friendly, regular or bigger sized caches (my son loves those maccy D toys ) that are in nice locations that would be good places to visit on our vacation anyway, and are accessible by public transport (or close enough for a reasonably priced taxi ride). nothing too difficult please as we are relative beginners (although already hooked, of course) I'm mainly concentrating on our week in Van as we'll be on our own and need things to do (staying with pals in Alberta) and also I'm hoping the climate might be relatively mild in BC. We are prepared for extreme cold in Edmonton and might choose to stay indoors (but if you know of an unmissable cache around Edmonton or Calgary, feel free to let me know) I'm going to bring some travel bugs with me, and some very British swag to leave behind thanks in advance for your assistance Sarah (PS on an entirely unrelated matter, I have just realised I still need to book my internal flights!! do you have any suggestions for the best company to fly with from Van to Edmonton and then from Edmonton onto Calgary?)
