I had noticed quite a few caches showing up in the 3 Sisters Wilderness as of late, and it just got me thinking (one is even on top of South Sister!)

It will be interesting to see how government agencies react as the sports popularity grows. I myself have seen some "high impact" caches during my short stint with the game. Anyhow, I guess it never hurts to remind us all that we need to take care when placing the caches!

This is really the first summer that geocaching has experienced an exponential growth of new caches and cachers with an accessibility to the high country and wilderness areas. I am sure that once the appropriate ranger district is aware of the Three Sisters caches they will pull them.

  2. I have been using my digital camera to record my log entries and caching adventures for a year now. It is also great to make snap-and-go pics of signs and plaques on multi-caches. This affords a double check of clues down the road if necessary. When making the tagged caches with the rest of the Moondog team, the camera has been great to record both sides of the metal tags as a future reference. Plus a quick pic of the tag location is good to have to send other cachers if they have problems.

  3. Caching events are organized events for real get-togethers between cachers for the purpose of dicussing geocaching. Although your idea is great, it would be more appropriate to post a note in your regional forums and invite anyone in the area. Imagine how clutterd the events page would be if everyone did the same thing. The NW forums has a continuing thread for a group of cachers who regularly meet on Wed. nights for a little caching and socializing.

  4. You see roadside memorials for accident vitims all the time, but this was odd because of the location so far from the road. Makes you wonder if there was some other circumstance involved. I found their names on the SSDI list (Social Security Death Index).

  5. We used waypoint projections on our Rimwalker II cache for some added challenge and fun.

On two legs of the cache you are required to project a waypoint to the next tag. The instructions for the projections on the tags are a compass bearing and a distance. Mark your current position and then input the bearing and distance from this spot for your projection. This creates a new waypoint where you find the next tag.

Sorry, I posted on the wrong sock puppet thread. This is the one I was referring to.

  7. I placed the Hawk Mtn Lookout Cache recently and was thinking of naming it after a nearby meadow close to the trailhead - Cachebox Meadow. Logscaler has a cache named Cache Creek over in Eastern Ore. I have the Oregon GPS Waypoint book that lists all the names on the USGS topo maps and the only other placename is Cache Meadow near High Rock and the upper Roaring River. Beautiful area, but a very rocky road to the trailhead.

  9. The Badlands is a fascinating area and one of our favorite places to explore. Two of our caches are located in the area. Walkabout and Badlands. It will be disappointing if the area is ever designated a wilderness area. I am a believer that caches should not be in federally designated wilderness areas and I know they have pulled some caches in wilderness areas in southern Oregon. Hopefully the city of Bend will follow through on their proposal for a wilderness and we will be able to work with them when the time comes to do so. The BLM designated this a study area over two years ago and I am sure it will be several years before anything occurs if at all.

  10. Sounds interesting, although I'm not clear on what the admission price would buy a participant. Markwell has a good point about East Coasters justifying the travel expenses. Not sure how exclusive the event is meant to be, but maybe it would be a good idea to have several regional conferences around the country/world during different times of the year.
