  1. Here is a poll/post that I put out earlier in the year that you might be interested. It is entitled "Everything you wanted to know about swag". It goes over what you are discussing. Check it out: http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2...know-about.html -HHH
  2. Well if you have never been to a geocaching event or was curious of what they are like. Wonder what a three day geocaching event looks like? Check out this latest GeoSnippits video showing the 2009 NCGO Fall Fling. Enjoy - HHH
  3. Besides what has already been mentioned are you trying to do paperless geocaching with a Palm? Shy of the smart phones having GPS capability the standard Palms do now but are used frequently to do geocaching. You can check out these video links to see how that works if interested: GeoSnippits: Paperless Geocaching Part One GeoSnippits: Paperless Geocaching Part Two -HHH
  4. Muggles are just part of the fun with geocaching. There is quite a thrill attempting to find something without looking like you are trying to find something. The issues with that is if you look too suspicious the police can become part of your experience. There is also the danger of a geocache being stolen or thought of as a bomb depending on the circumstances. When stealth is required it is more for protecting the hidden geocache more than anything. -HHH
  5. You might want to keep in mind that using a GPS unit that is meant for an automobile is really not the same as using a hand held GPS. They are not durable and the slightest amount of water is going to kill it. You will also have a heck of a time even in pedestrian mode with geocaches near roads. It tends to stick with the road and not where you actually are. As for loading waypoints onto a Nuvi I recommend using GSAK and there are a couple really good macros for loading the waypoints onto an SD card. If you load them into memory they are a pain to delete but on the card is easy to update. Hope this helps, -HHH
  6. I prefer pens but if the log is wet you are going to have issues. I usually carry both just in case and worse case scenario carry some blank log sheets with you so if the log is that bad you can just add an clean sheet with it. -HHH
  7. Welcome to the obsession. When you first start out it tends to take a bit longer to have your geocache posted. Once you have been doing it a while and the reviewer is familiar with you it tends to come much faster. Figure 3-5 days as a norm. Be sure to check it often just in case the reviewer has any comments or questions about your hide. Way to go. -HHH
  8. To answer your question the official travel bugs have a tag with an id number already on it. I recently did an episode for Michigan Magazine TV about travel bugs and geocoins. There is also a GeoSnippits on this subject as well if interested. Go to the GeoSnippits website and it is towards the bottom of season one. http://www.geosnippits.com -HHH
  9. I wrote a really good article based on feedback from the geocaching.com forums on this very subject called: Everything You Wanted To Know About Swag. You may find some really good nuggets in this. http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2...know-about.html -HHH

  14. GeoSnippits Geocaching Videos are featured on Michigan Magazine TV (RFDTV NetWork) each and every week. They are shown twice a week in all 50 states. My question is this: Is there any other regularly featured geocaching show on television besides GeoSnippits? If so when and where? Would appreciate any info. -HHH
  15. I recently put out a new GeoSnippits video for demonstrating the basic principle of triangulation. This is used for finding a geocache in heavily wooded areas. In the definition portion of it I used the word "triangularization" instead instead of triangulation. After looking it up on the internet I found it was used interchangeably or at the very least I hope it is being used interchangeably. Either way the idea of finding ground zero when your GPS is not cooperating is the point of the video and I hope you get something out of it. http://headhardhat-geocache.blogspot.com/2...ache-using.html -Enjoy HHH
  16. I was asked recently to create several GeoSnippits that showed advanced techniques of geocaching and it occurred to me that one man's advanced is another man's way too easy. So I am asking the more advanced geocachers out there what topics would be good to make GeoSnippits Videos out of? If we use your idea you will win a GeoSnippits PathTag for your efforts and a lot of thank yous from us!!! -HHH
  17. Have fun with the hides folks.. Just remember to put your hides in areas of interest to other geocachers. That makes the game so much more fun. Anybody can put a 35mm in lamp skirt but it takes some real thought to make a truly interesting hide... Looking forward to them.. -HHH

  23. You will come in contacts of muggles of all types. Be it the innocent passerby, law enforcement or the just plain curious. The main idea is while geocaching you do not want to give away the presence of a geocache to muggles because of a host of reasons. Yet if confronted, let them know if asked. Especially if it is law enforcement. -HHH
  24. There are many instances of when a geocoin is taken and not logged for quite some time. Other times people pick up a traveler and is on a trip and again not had a chance to log it yet. Sometimes they are just plain lost or in limbo for months at a time. -HHH
  25. Very interesting list this year, please keep them coming.. Any specific GPS units do people want this year?
