  1. On the waiting period between caches:

I intend to do my first caches in phases.

First I'll be gathering containers and the toys & trinkets and logbooks to put in them.

See, if I come across a clearance sale on useful items, I'll stock up.

Then, I'll put the caches together and make sure they seal properly and all.

Then, I'll spend a day or two going out and returning to the locations I have scouted out (over a few months) to double check the coordinates and make sure that the site still looks viable. Also will take site pictures at this time to submit to the people who approve caches for posting to help them determine if each cache is a reasonably good quality one.

Then, I'll have to write up descriptions, take pictures of the cache container, cleanup the photos (site & cache contents) and have everything ready for submittal.

Then, I will spend a day going to all of the locations and placing the containers.

Then I will submit them for posting on the webpage.

It might appear to anyone who wasn't involved in the process that I placed 6 or 8 hastily prepared caches, when in reality they may have more thought, preparation, and quality than many others out there.

In other words, the frequency can be an indicator of quality, but it isn't necessarily so. A few honest opinions in the log of finds (Like "Why did you even bother... the cache location is nothing special, the container leaked, and the contents was junk") would probably dissuade the person from sacrificing quality for haste in the future.

  2. Sounds elitist.

I just found GeoCaching, but I'll match my GPS skills and woodsmanship / orienteering abilities against anyone.

Bring your test on, I was ready before I ever found Geocaching.

The Cache etiquette is nothing more than common sense.

If you don't want to help out newbies, you really don't have to. Maybe below each post it could have the number of caches found, and how long the person has been doing caching, so that you could just skip all of the worthless drivel that the unqualified morons & imbeciles such as myself try to offer.

    This gave me an idea...

How about a feature in the search engine (don't whack me with that stick again if it already exists) which allows you to look for all of the caches you haven't logged a find to in a given area?

That way, people can quickly look for older and newer ones that they haven't found, w/o sifting through all of the ones in their area.

My main reason to hide a cache is to bring a cacher to an area that might leave some impact on them, mostly scenic. I have never considered hiding THAT many caches, as I would think they would not be noteworthy, even if a cacher that was new to the sport would find it.

I could easily lead people to about 15 interesting places in Banner Forest (about 800 acres, I think... it's about 3 miles by 3 miles).

I would say that in most cases 1/4 mile between caches seems about right, but in some cases that is too close, and in other cases 50 feet would be enough, if GPS wre accurate enough to differentiate between the caches.

I have the advantage of having spent a lot more time exploring that area than most people when I was scouting it for Hash Trails that I intend to eventually Hare.

Also, some people enjoy doing Caching with kids, and if they can do a few at a time w/o driving place to place, they might enjoy that.

As long as they aren't so close together that a person might mistake one for another, who cares?

If you only want to do one in an area... you can. But for those who enjoy several in the same area... they can't if they aren't there.

In other words, many caches in an area gives people the freedom to choose their own preference.

  6. BTW, while I was there I used my brush cutter to clear the path from the road to the cache, and I painted three yellow rings at eye level around the tree whose roots it is under. I then hung flourescent yellow ribbon every five feet along the path that I cleared all the way to the parking lot.

Pretty clever the way you put it 20 ft north of the gazebo like that.

I didn't say any were good or lame.

I didn't say I even looked for Banner Nanner yet.

I don't get my new GPS until tonight, and with my old Garmin GPS38, there's not much point in looking for caches that I can't find by just the description. My area has trees everywhere, and the GPS38 won't work in even moderate tree cover.

I was out there last night... tried to see if I could find Sign of Peace in Banner Forest, but the first time I went to the marsh area my wife & kids had the GPS. It's got enough of an open shot to the sky to get a reading. Then, (after I'd finished jogging) when I met up with my family (and the Mangy Dog who abandoned me on the run!) we were unable to find our way back to the marsh area, and aborted the attempt because it was getting late and it was pouring rain.

All I want to know is... is Banner Nanner there.

If so, I will attempt to find it, refurbish it, adopt it and get it unarchived.

It'd be nice to know if it's still there. If it is, I will be less inclined to give up the search if I don't find it.

Keep in mind, I only started Geocaching last Friday! I have 3 finds, and 2 aborted attempts because i have zero GPS capability in even the slightest tree cover (another geocacher told me he was amazed I could find anything with my old tech GPS).

After UPS arrives tonight, I won't have that excuse anymore.

  9. I'll be back out there in Banner Forest jogging with my dog tonight.

After I'm done jogging, my wife & kids will be joining me for geocaching.

If you see a guy jogging with a black lab (looks like anyway) it's probably me.

I'll get there around 5:30, not sure when my family will arrive. I will be done jogging around 6:30. If you see me, or a lady with two kids carrying a GPS, say hi.

  10. Thanks.

    Good info.

I like the "complete history" concept.

I'll be back out there on my usual jog tonight, but may end up running out of time because after my jog I'll be looking for another one, and on my jog I intend to replace the outer bag on one that I already have found that had holes in it (someone else suggested replacing the bag in an earlier log entry, and I'll be there anyway for my jog).

As the owner of both a Magellan and Garmin, I consider statements like that to be nothing more than "urban legend."

This website claims that patch antennas are better, except for the Etrex. (less susceptible to metal influencing reception).

It doesn't say if the metal-detuning influence is temporary, or permanent.

I don't see why most GPS units don't have an external antenna jack!

Not sure if the author knows his stuff or not (I don't have enough experience to tell yet)...

  12. I had a non-find, but it was because I had no GPS coverage (Garmin GPS38 is too old tech for in the treed areas), didn't take along the Topo Map, and ran out of time (also, my dog & little girl got stung while searching).

I printed the Topo map afterwards, and my new GPS should arrive tomorrow, so I expect to do a better search, and then if I have a find or no find I will log it.

Which brings me to my question... should I even waste space logging a non-find that really was because of adverse conditions that probably made me miss one that otherwise I would have found? Especially since I'll be going back w/i a week or so?

Are there many in Poin Defiance area?

I did the 5 mile drive loop on the motorcycle

last weekend, and saw a lot of potential.

Terrain makes a difference. In the Kitsap Penninsula area (Gig Harber, Port Orchard, Bremerton, Kinston...)

You could put caches in a .1 mile dotted grid, and they'd seem far apart because of all the trees and terrain features.

I have a plan for a six chache theme in Banner Forest, but I have to start getting the elements together before I can begin getting serious about taking coords & such.

BTW, if you Bro-Inlaw is interested in trying it, and wants some help, I can always take him to one that I already have foud, or on a new find to help him out. Give him my email, and make sure he references this message thread so I'll know what it's about.

The offer also goes out to anyone who hasn't tried it yet... I have only been at it a week, so I'm no expert, but I know how to find things (from Hashing) and how to get lost in the woods (also from Hashing).

Actually, the constitution also gives you a right not to be exposed to indecent material.

Indecent is defined (legally) by community standards.

Also, the constitution gives you the right not to display anything you don't want to on property (including electronic) you own.

If you were a mamber of NAMBLA, I wouldn't want your literature in the caches, even if you were 100% sincere in the belief that what they espouse is morally okay.

Also, if I accidentally open a picture at work when surfing the internet (at luch & breaks, of course) that has "inappropriate" amterial, I can get into quite a hassle.

If you want people to respect your opinion, don't force it on them. Whether it's your Religion, na alternate lifestyle, or the notion that Mopar makes the best cars.

What you think is okay for your kids may not be the same as what others want their kids exposed to... respect their rights as parents.

Also, some adults feel that viewing others naked is not the right thing to do except among married couples. Respect their beliefs.

You wouldn't want them planting poison oak at your nudist colony, would you?

  15. A lighter in the wrong hands

    could be dangerous...

    91290_700.jpg

Y'know, I was refused admission to an airshow on Mcchord AFB because I had a 1.312" blade (3,3cm) knife in my pocket.

Here are these guys walking around all over the place with M16's, and I'm gonna hijack the AFB with a keychain knife?

I had to either go back to my car in the rain, or throw the knife in the trash. I've had this knife for a few years, so I'm attached to it.

Walked back to the car. Got wet feet. Spent 2 hours before I rejoined my family. Wet feet caused blisters.

Next time they ask "Do you have any guns, knives, etc... Just say "no".

Sometimes I gues being honest has ridiculous costs.

The razor doesn't have an exposed blade.

The lighter could be a problem, but not likely (anyone that would cause trouble with it could bring one from home).

But, I wouldn't put any of those items in for a few reasons...

    1. Cheesey. Better an empty container & post "seeking donations" in the cache description (make filling it with trinkets part of the game).

    2. Potential for a problem, though small.

    3. Somebody will post a gripe about it being inappropriate.

    4. It could fall into the hands of terrorists.

Hukt un fonix werkt fur mee

  16. Is there anyone here who knows where it was (I don't mean just the coordinates?)

I'm going to try to find it, and if I have no success,

I'd like to get in touch with someone who could either

tell me exactly what to look for, or better yet, meet

me at the parking area and show me where it is...

or just go with me and help me as necessary, (with hints & guidance).

Or, if someone could just verify that it is still there,

I'll try to contact the former owner of the cache

and see about adopting it (or re-creating it if she agrees).

I intend to do a theme of several caches in Banner forest,

and "Banner Nanner" will be the first in that theme,

if I can make the arrangements to use it.

    So, if you can either...

    Verify it's still there,

or help me find it if I fail on my own,

Let me know (here or by email to M_Kanzler@yahoo.com)

    Thanks.

  17. UPDATE: I ordered the Magellan SporTrak Pro yesterday,

I found a really nicely featured GPS on clearance.

There appear to be two models. There is the Magellan

"SporTrak Pro GPS System" for $129, but they were sold

out of this model, however, ita appears that they are

back in stock now. They also have the "SporTrak

Map GPS System", which is only $99 and is similar. Here are

two links to the sales on the $129 and the $99 one, followed

by three more links which allow you to compare the SporTrak

GPS, GPS Map & GPS Pro models.

    http://www.gpslocators.com/maspmaphagps.html

    http://www.gpslocators.com/maspprogpsre.html

The one for $99 seems to be a great deal, with many features.

It has maps of North America built in, and other features,

including a fish & game computer... it can tell you where

high probabilities of finding fish & game at certain times

of year might be... Probably has tide tables built in, it does

have sunset & sunrise & moon phase data for the location of

each waypoint you ask it about (which could be where you are,

or a location you entered into the memory on the GPS unit).

But the one for $129 has more memory, which is recommended

for hikers & outdoorsman (Link Below).

IF THE GPS SALE SHOWS "sold out"... Try it again after a

little while. I checked on the $129 one this morning,

and it was sold out... then I tried it again a few minutes

ago, and it was back in stock (So I ordered one before

they showed up as gone again).

This was the second time I saw it change to Sold Out

    and then back to available.

I checked with Flying J (the seller) to see if they were

reconditioned (their website title is "Factory Reconditioned

Items")... because it didn't have the reconditioned item Icon

next to the item like other items did. They told me it is in

fact brand new, in the box, and complete with instructions

and everything else that it is supposed to iclude.

  19. I wonder if you could put vaseline on one part (like the lid) of the chest, and then run a bead of silicone along the other side. Maybe unscrew the hinge, and don't push the parts all the way together while the silicone is curing so that it will be a bit thick and get squeezed under pressure when you close the lid after it has fully cured.

Maybe some automtive weatherstipping would be useful?
