  1. Yesterday we went to one where the coords at the top were for the parking area, and the actual cache coords were down in the description. This makes all of the linkable maps way off, so that a person who is trying to find it with just a map & compass will be out of luck when he uses the maps he printed from the cache's links.

Please, post the actual Coords of the cache in the correct manner so that they end up in big bold print at the top of the page.

I think that the administrators would really enhance the site by allowing the system to accept 47° 24.ABC x 122° 33.XYZ as coordinates to be printed at the top for caches where the coords are part of a puzzle (like multi caches).

Fortunately, people have made it obvious most of the time by using 47° 24.000 x 122° 33.000 or putting the waypoint out in the water, or placing a large red lettered message stating that the coords given are not where the cache is.

Maybe a special way that the system treats them so that the Topo map prints w/ a target labeled "Park Here" or "Start Here", or no links to the Topo map, just a Yahoo map with the above (Park Here) label.

I hope that someday we will be able to put away

our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

  2. Explain to him that a find is (in spirit) a discovery, and that when you return to a cache, if you want to make note of it, you can choose "Post a Note", so that your total number of finds doesn't become artificially inflated.

Also, explain that, some people look at & compare the number of Finds vs. Did Not Finds to help them decide if the cache is within their abilities, or the time they have available on a given day, and by adding finds it could make it look like it's easier to find than it actually is.

Let him know that he can still go back to the online logbook for that cache, and can edit his entries and change all but the first one to "Notes" instead of "Finds".

Just today I changed a Note to a Find... I was griping about one where the coords at the top were for the parking area, and the actual cache coords were down in the description. This makes all of the linkable maps way off, so that a person who is trying to find it with just a map & compass will be out of luck when he uses the maps he printed from the cache's links.

I hope that someday we will be able to put away

our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

  3. Ah, that makes sense.

Is there a good way to compensate for that?

Is there a better place for Topo maps (one that uses WGS84)?

It seems like it'd make sense for one system to be the standard.

If I use UTM (on TopoZone, if available) will that bring commonality between the cache listings and the topo maps?

I hope that someday we will be able to put away

our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

  4. I often find that the coordinates given match the cache location (once I get there), but the topo map linked to from the cache page doesn't match where the cache is located.

For instance, This One is shown S (Left hand side, approching from Banner Rd) of the svc road on the topo map, but both of my GPS units (on two seperate days) show the waypoint N of the road.

Of course, I've looked extensively in both areas, and have yet to find this one. I'll be out there again on my afternoon jog today (Sun.), and will look again in the area my GPS says it should be. I'l probably end up smacking my forehead and saying "D'oh! How could I miss THAT".

  5. Get her One of These and print out all of the FAQ's & instructions.

Find a few easy ones (or try to remember a few).

Give her a glass of wine or a couple of beers (bring along extra in case you need to "Re-apply".

Then, go with her, as an observer (or have your wife do it), and give as few hints as possible.

Let her do it on her own. She'll either learn, or you'll end up with a backup GPS unit.

Even if she quits and the GPS sits on the shelf, it'll be worth the $99.00!

I also like the idea above... do it at Christmas... buy her a cheap fur coat at a thrift store, and a hat with antlers, and tell her it's a "Rudolph themed cache hunt"...

Is she single? Hook her up with Spzzmoose... he'll teach her the ins & outs of Geocaching.

  6. I enjoy the jokes. Well, the ones that fit into a message thread... as long as the jokes come naturally and aren't forced, and are not offensive to anyone. Some people may have kids who are allowed on this website, so I'd kepp that in mind.

But, you had better learn... your wife is ALWAYS right.

I hope that someday we will be able to put away

our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

  7. Remember, your own head can block out one or more sattelites from reaching the antenna.

Sometimes I will hold my GPS unit up high for a couple of minutes, or set it on something like the top of a tall tree stump, and walk away for a few minutes (search the immediate area).

This was particularly useful on my older unit. My new SporTrak Pro amazes me at how well it works in the forest.

But even with my new unit, I sometimes catch myself holding it too low.

Also, I like to place it near the left side of my dashboard when driving in tree lined roads... that puts it nearer the centerline of the road, and farthest from the greatest number of trees.

BTW, do those Rebroadcast Antennas work well?

  8. A general tip for everyone...

Be specific in your title... like:

Help... how do I put coords im my Etrex?

That way, those who know absolutely knothing about Etrex, won't open the message...

And won't re-open it when they forget that it was something they can't help out with.

I hope that someday we will be able to put away

our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

  9. I guess your moniker is too masculine? icon_wink.gif

Maybe draw little flowers around log entries.

Although I have seen kids say "You guys" to a group of girls, and girls calling each other "Dude".

You could come up with an Avatar... maybe an anime image?

  10. Thanks.

I'll go join that yahoo group (what's one more yahoo to a guy like me... icon_wink.gif )

I'll probably do more reading in the manual.

I have a 1-1/2 hour commute each way, so I have time to read the manual before I go ask more dumb questions in another forum.

I hope that someday we will be able to put away

our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

  11. It'd be nice if there were a single button to switch to "Simulation" mode... I hate when I'm programming the GPS and right in the middle of inputting a waypoint I get that alarm and taken to a different screen!

It'd be nice if I could quickly go to simulation as soon as I turn the unit on!

BTW, is there a way to get rid of the stupid disclaimer screen at startup?

I hate having to hit enter repeatedly (twice?) at startup each time!

I wish manufacturers would realize that the ability to disable features is desirable.

Can I turn of WAAS & averaging on my SporTrak Pro?

I hope that someday we will be able to put away

our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

  12. Hmm... I wonder if some automated new cache posting time standard would be good.

Like, new caches only go online every six hour increment (midnight, 06:00, noon, 18:00)

That way, the website would get bogged down and start running reall slow a couple of times each day!

I hope that someday we will be able to put away

our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

  13. Quantum Mechanic,

Your profile shows your location as "Worldwide"...

You may want to give a general location of where you are considering getting together.

I'm up in Seattle area, and I gather you are near Portland from the link you gave.

I hope that someday we will be able to put away

our fears and prejudices and just laugh at people.

  14. It'd be nice if all of the pictures you've uploaded were listed on the

"My Cache" page (URL Below), and if we could add & delete from there too.

    http://www.geocaching.com/my/

    Another enhancemant I'd like:

Once I've done a search for caches nearby, the ability to check the ones that I think are interesting, and then have them saved in a list of "Intersting caches".

Also, when I look at a cache online, if it looks interesting, add it to a list of "Interesting caches"

I'm not sure if "Watch this cache" will accoplish the same thing. I'll give that a try.

So far, I've assumed that "Watch this cache" will send me an email whenever someone logs a find, DNF, or othe note to it.

I'd like to be able to just have a list of caches I'm interested in, which would look just like the search results, but contain all & only the caches I've "highlighted".

Another idea... for another cache type icon...

an Icon in addition to the cache type & the TB flag would be a compass friendly icon... one which tells which ones are vible to be found w/o a GPS unit just from the description & map with only a map & compass.

Maybe the ability to filter searches so that they only list caches that are compass friendly. also... the ability to filter to show only caches with travel bugs in them.

Maybe a "Search for nearby travel bugs" option?

    TAFN...

  15. I like that idea.

Here is a picture of my most frequent team mate...

I'll post a picture of my whole team (family) when I get it downloaded from the digital camera.

    eBay!

You could probably find someone willing to buy one to complete a set if you wait until awhile after they are no longer available. Who knows... maybe you could even buy some decent trinkets at Toys R Us with the money.

  17. Other than how to find out about a specific bug (I never realized it was a link... had the same problem trying to find definitions for the icons next to the caches on the search results pages), most of it seems common sense & courtesy, especially now that I read them.

I would definitely ask before I took a bug a long way in the wrong direction, but wasn't sure it was an option (to ask).

I can see where, I might start a bug with a goal of the south pole, but get a kick out of seeing how far away it could go in the process.

I could also see where I might not appreciate someone doing something contradictory to my bug's goal (assuming I had a TB). So contacting the owner seems reasonable.

The idea of not holding a bug seemed obvious to me... maybe too much so. I was thining that until I am geocaching at least a couple of times a week, I better not grab a TB and hold onto it (possibly a week or two). I'd hate to cause one to stagnate, and most of my caches are in a small area still, so there isn't much point in moving TB's around until I am covering miles instead of yards.

The upcoming trip is actually just my family (I don't have enough vacation time), and it's in a couple of weeks. But I'd like to find a travel bug for my wife to take with her (she's planning to do some geocaching on her trip). Of course, she'd have to be with me to find the bug (which is most probable anyway since we do this as a family most of the time) in order for it to really be "Proper" (at least in my mind of ethics definitions).

I just want to start finding out about the process, and don't want to wait until the last minute to go find a suitable travel bug (since there's no guarantee I will find any given cache that I look for). I guess a couple of weeks is acceptable. Hopefully she wouldn't strike out finding a cache on her trip... she will be leaving me the new (good) GPS and taking the old (Horrible) GPS... though there may not be as much tree cover where she is going, so the old one could be just fine (It works great if you're out in the open, but dies immediately in the forest).

If I don't get to search for a new cache with a TB, I suppose I could always wait until a few days before, and return to a cache I already know how to find, but that seems a little "cheesy" to me. But I will keep it as a last resort if I get to where I really want to move a travel bug, and haven't got time to do it in a proper fashion by finding a new (to us) cache.

But, I'm glad you mentioned the TB "goals" to me... otherwise THIS ONE might have found itself down in Florida in a couple of weeks!

    Or "BOMB SQUAD"

Many years ago, some friends of mine walked right out of Sears carrying a Ping-Pong table.

But, I have had the reverse happen too... back when I was a phone man:

I was sitting in my Telephone Company truck eating lunch between repair calls, and I was in a rough neighborhood. Some "lady" came up to me (I had my window rolled down) and said "You F__ng pig... we know you're a cop... you might as well get outta here, this stakeout ain't gonna work".

I later found out that the phone co. had made the mistake of letting police pose as installer/repairers to conduct surveillance a couple of years before I started working out in the field.

I have found that a pair of dockers, a shirt & tie, and a clipboard (combined with my company badge) will let me crawl all around inside airplanes on the assembly floor... even if the program I work on is 200 miles from where I am. Makes for great self-guided tours when you're on vacation! Ummm, or, err, so I've heard anyway.

I hope that someday we will be able to

put away our fears and prejudices and

  19. Where do I find out what the goal of the TB is?

Can I find out before I go to a cache? In other words, can I look at a few caches (online) with travel bugs, see what the goal of each bug is, and then decide which cache to look for based on trying to find one with a TB that has a goal which my trip would facilitate?

Let's say, a TB has a goal of reaching as close to the South Pole as possible... would I get (electronic) rotten tomatoes thrown at me for taking it from Seattle up to Alaska?

I hope that someday we will be able to

put away our fears and prejudices and

    just laugh at people.
