  1. Isn't it Private Property?

It's a theme park. Like Disneyland.

People are going on about government infringement upon our rights, but did any of you think about getting informed (like clicking the link to Cedar Point in one of the first few posts?).

If it's private property, then they can ask you to take your GPS back to your car.

They can tell you flip-flops are not appropriate shoes. They can (and do) require you to wear a shirt and shoes. If they wanted to ban cellphones and cameras and walkie-talkies, they could.

It's private property. It's not subject to guarantee many of your constitutional rights.

If you don't like it, you can just avoid patronizing their business. You can go on the news and give them some bad PR (some news shows have a "troubleshooter" segment where they will cal a business for you... often while on the air).

You can picket the public sidewalk in front of a business, or print up bumper stickes saying to boycott them.

But thay have the right to refuse service.

  2. Good point.

As you mentioned, it won't be a problem for us.

I'm just figuring it'd be fun to grab a few (maybe half a dozen) to take to Florida, and then watch them to see where they go.

Sort of a cheapskate's way to enjoy travel bugs... restart them off on the other side of the country and see where they go from there.

I'd be willing to buy a few & all, But Sherri and I just started, so we want to get a feel for Travel Bugs before venturing into some of our own.

  3. Actually, I'd rather not have them on my TB list, since I won't be involved at both ends of the transfer.

But, I forgot... I'm actually gonna be out of comission for a week. I'm trying to get used to the fact that I have to stay off my feet for a week... maybe I can do some walking in a few days since it was running in combination with walking too many miles that did me in - Plantar Fasciitis. Perhaps as long as I don't run I will be okay to do some walking in a few days.

Anyway, she has been to all of the ones I have, so she might as well go get the TB's on her own. She already has one more cache find than I do (she called me a little while ago to tell me), so collecting TB's will keep her busy while I'm convalescing.

Oh well, maybe we will be able to find some that are in areas that I can expect to get to the cache without walking very far. I guess I need some caches for the physically impaired.

  4. You're gonna end up eating a steady diet of government chees and living in a van down by the river.

You're Dog talks to you too!?

My wife will go geocaching at the drop of a hat.

I don't know how long this will last, but it keeps me entertained. I think even the kids are starting to tire of geocaching.

I'm supposed to stay off my feet for the next week... which means I'll probably end up home alone!

  5. I went to one that was a multi... the first coordinates just sent you to a "feature" which had a copper tag with the real cache coords Punched into it with letter stamps..

Something like that would be viable even in a national park... nail the copper tag to a post or tree, place the cache outside the boundaries, as long as both are near the boundary.

  6. If I'm planning to go on a long vacation, would there be anything wrong with returning to caches near my house that I have already found, grabbing Travel Bugs, enterring it in the logbook and online as only a note (not a find) and properly showing the TB in my possesion, and then placing it in a cache far away while on vacation?

I'm thinking of collecting a bunch of them.

Also, to change to the real scenario... is there a way I could grab them for my wife, log them to her posession (can you transfer the holder of a TB without doing it via a cache?), and let her place them when she goes on vacation away from me?

I definitely don't want them logged in my possession and then have to log onto caches that I never went to (I suppose I could do it in a Note so that I don't end up with "Falsified Finds").

What are the opinions of the Geocacher population on this one? I'd like y'all's input.

  7. I would never claim to have found a cache I never even saw.

When my wife and I cache together (with the dog & kids), I usually will sign for both of us... I do the writing while she helps the kids do the trinket exchange. I usually ask if she wants me to write for her, and she always has the opportunity to add to the entry.

When she goes by herself, she will log only herself.

When I went by myself, I only logged myself... Then I went with her a few days later and watched her find it on her own (Only giving hints like "Read the log entries again").

Here is an Example of one where we went together after one of us had previously found it.

But if you were never there, IMNSHO, it's not ethical to log a find.

  8. Anything no longer active gets archived.

Owner moves away, cache gets stolen, etc.

BTW, put details about your question in the title of the message thread... makes it easier to kepp track which is which.

  9. Just buy the cheapest spray paint you can getin approximately the right colors.

Gloss paint will be fine... you can sand it to a flat finish with 220 grit wet/dry paper, or put a coat of flat clearcoat over the top afterwards.

  10. Thrift stores sell X-Country ski poles from time to time. Garage sales are also a good source.

Make a mount for your GPS on the handle end, and you can use it to lift your GPS higher to get a position fix when you're in brush, and you can use it to hold your gps by sticking it in the ground while you are signing the logbook and all that.

They're also handy for poking around in bushes, rotten treestumps, etc. to look for the cache.

They are also useful for encouraging the kids to pick up the pace.

I'm thinking of buying a pair, and cutting the top off of one so I can slide one inside the other so I'll have one to hold my GPS and the other to poke around for the cache when I get to the coords. Also, I can join them to make a long one to reach the GPS above the trees to some extent (increase the projection view angle skyward).

A Camera Monopod isn't too bad either. I found one, and used it a bit, but returned it to the Geocacher who left it in the woods.

But, most of the time I just pick up a broken branch and use that. I don't need a walking stick to walk with, and find the cumbersome.

I just need something to probe the cache site, prod the kids, and project my GPS coverage a bit by elevating the antenna.
