  1. Upgraded from my Legend to the 60CS yesterday and love it! I used Topo! extensively with my Legend but it doesn't appear to support USB. Thoughts or suggestions please? Will a USB to serial adapter work or do I need to invest in the serial cable?

    Thanks!

You need to update your Mapsource program. Updating the Mapsource program will not affect maps included with Topo, City Select, etc but it will add new features including the ability to transfer maps, waypoints, routes and tracks via USB.

    Here's a link:

    http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

After running this update you should have no problems transfering Topo maps to your 60CS. If you do it's probably because you don't have the 60CS drivers loaded.

  2. I don't think you can turn off the POI on City Select. But you can change the symbol set.

I'm going from memory but on the map set up page there should be a marine set-up tab. One of the options under that tab should be something like "light symbols" with options like "Garmin","International","NOAA"...

    Choose "NOAA".

  3. I use Metroguide V4.0 with a GPSmap 60CS and it autoroutes just fine. Like someone already mentioned, Metroguide V5.0 and later do not autoroute.

I went with Metroguide V4.0 because it was only $40 off of ebay and I already had two eTrex units that can use Metroguide but not City Select. I have not been told to jump off of bridge yet, nor has it lead me down a one way road yet. But, I'm the carbon-based life form so I will not get talked into doing something stupid by a $400 silicon-based non-self-aware life form. :P

  4. My eTrex Vista had the screen problem right after I got it. So I did the RMA thing and got my Vista back within the week. I think I sent it off on Monday morning and had it back either Thursday or Friday morning.

The real story is that a new GPSmap 162 I had purchased when dead all of the sudden. Since I had already had a Garmin unit fixed under warranty, they next day'ed my 162 back to me (sent is on Monday morning got a replacement back on Tuesday evening). They also send a second mounting station for the trouble.

It's not fun when a unit goes out on you but Garmin's great service eases the pain.

  5. On another thread I recanted a story about a couple that ordered two 60C units. In a side-by-side comparison, her 60C always had a much stronger signal. He eventually sent his back and Garmin sent him a new unit that gets much better reception.

So, try reloading the lastest firmware. If that doesn't help call Garmin tech support.

  6. Mr. and Mrs. Parrothead ordered a "his and her" matching set of GPSmap 60C's. As luck would have it, her unit was a fine, strong example of GPS muscle while his was as wimpy as a wet noodle. Since they were able to do side-by-side comparisons, they quickly determimed that his unit was defective. It was sent back and replaced with a Stalwart unit that has lead them on may successful cache hunts.

The moral of the story is that if you have a unit with particullary weak satellite reception, you might want to check in to getting a replacement under warranty.

  7. IT'S A JOKE JUST LIKE THE FIRST FAKED "TECH SUPPORT E-MAIL".

I would never ask for a feature to not be implemented and I hope that Garmin's tech support folks have something better to do on a Saturday morning that send e-mails and hang around with managment.

Sorry for anyone who took this a real - IT'S JUST A JOKE.

    :embarrassed:

  8. By the way,

I've loaded 3.80gi but have never set up any categories in Mapsource so I'm going to be working for the next 30 minutes or so setting up some categories. I'll also check to see if I can transfer 255 characters from Mapsource comment field.

The cosmetic change to Gekoids is that the asteroids look like sport track units until you shoot them then they turn into two explorists. The center icon that does the shooting looks like a 60C.

  9. I got a surprise e-mail from a Garmin tech service employee this morning here it is (minus the attachement):

    XXXXX,

I received your e-mail just before quitting time on Friday. I didn’t know what to think of it until I looked at the Groundspeak forums yesterday evening. I know now that it was written rather tongue-in-cheek. I just happened to see to XXXX XXXXXX this morning and told him about the thread and your letter. He thought it was funny and told me I could send you our internal release of the GPSmap 60C/76C firmware that includes waypoint categories and a 255-character comment field. I didn’t have 3.90gi at home so I’ve attached 3.80gi. The “gi” stands for Garmin Internal. We keep an internal version and a production version that gets posted on the website.

The only other difference between 3.80gi and 3.80, other than the comment field and waypoint categories, is a cosmetic change to Gekiods.

By the way, Waypoint Categories does add a menu option but doesn’t add any menu depth until you actually select it.

I’ll try to remember to send you 3.90gi when I get to work on Monday. Just e-mail me at xxxxxxx@garmin.com if I forget.

Have fun but please do not share this firmware with anyone else.

    Sincerely,

    xxxxx

  10. Below is a copy of a letter I wrote to Garmin's Technical Service. Please feel free to copy and resend in support of this idea:

    Dear Garmin,

As you know I am a long-time customer who has purchased a GPS 38, two eTrex Mariners, an eTrex Legend and Vista, a GPS 128, GPSmap 162 and GPSmap 60CS. I have also purchased a Camo eTrex for my Dad, and 7 titles of Mapsource maps.

I am writing to request that you not add waypoint categories to the GPSmap 60C(S) and 76C(S) series. I love the way these units handle waypoints and think that categories would create another layer of menus that would provide little to no value to me as a user.

Thanks for your consideration on this and all the past requests that you have both considered and implemented.

    Thanks again,

    XXXXXXXX - actuual name withheld

  11. You've made your point on two different threads. There are a lot of GPSmap 60C(S)/76C(S) users on this board and it hasn't been a problem for any of them thus far.

FYI - about six months ago I made a polite request to Garmin about a feature. They sent me a note saying no one had ever asked for such a thing so I figured I was out of luck. Within a couple of firmware updates they had implemented my request perfectly.

They may be working on yours too.

  12. You must make up your own manuals or are too stupid to figure out what I'm talking about.

    HonestPleasure,

This forum is full of friends that have come to enjoy conservation with one another and share useful tips and ideas.

I don't apperciate this kind of flaming being brought to a place that has been so friendly.

Get a grip and get a feel for this board before starting such mess.

  13. Alll of my Garmin units have been solid. Specifically, my GPSmap 60CS is both smooth and rugged. I've carried it for over a year while hunting and fishing in saltwater. It gets covered in mud when I'm picking up decoys and has been completely drenched in pure saltwater more times than I can care to count but it still looks and works like out-of-the-box new. All I do is wash it in warm soapy water when I get back home.
