  1. coggins,

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of setting, USE WITH GPS OFF. I will try that when I get home from work.

Is it possible to create the route, by simply selecting 2 waypoints, and NOT going to the map and choosing a NEW LOCATION?

Can I just go to ROUTE. NEW ROUTE. and then input two different waypoints?

    I will experiment. thanks again.

  2. UPDATE: FWIW, it seems as though the 60csx is trying to route me from CA then to HI and then specifically from beach 1 to beach 2. I dont know this for sure, but I am guessing.

When I create a route in the 60csx, will the unit always try and route you from your currect location?

To create the route, I went into ROUTES, "select next point" is highlighted so I hit enter, then chose the first waypoint [beach 1], then i chose the second waypoint [beach 2].

OK, I just tried to create a route which is here in CA, even though I thought I told the 60csx to go from waypoint 1 to waypoint 2, it started me at my current location. Is there a way to create a route like it can be created in mapsource...whereby you go from waypoint to waypoint not from your current location. For example, lets say I wanted to give someone directions from one point to another, but not starting from the point I was at.

    Thanks

  3. Do you have the map segments for that part of the country loaded in your GPS unit?

As to the Google Earth question, are you using the link within MapSource that reads "View in Google Earth"? Or are you getting the route into GE some other way?

Map sections are loaded into GPS. I reloaded them in just to make sure. Hawaii is comprised of one segment so it was easy.

Also, I indeed had the autorouting checkbox checked when I loaded the maps (and when I reloaded the maps).

As far as getting them into GE, I am using the view in GE from the pulldown menus.

  4. 1. Route calculation error.

    Q. Are you able to drive to that beach from where you are?

    Q. As in on the same island?

    2. Routes in MapSource and your GPS are just a list of waypoints and via points, so that is what is showing up in Google Earth. Tracks, on the other hand, are the path you are looking for. Start with this and we'll see if we can get you to the beach.

Mapsource believes I can drive to the beach. Mapsource creates a route, which looks good when shown on the map. Takes recognized streets and puts you at the waypoint marker. Seems strange that a route can be created in Mapsource, but then not on the GPS unit.

The two wayponts I chose were both on the same island.

Can I create a track in mapsource or on the GPS. I thought tracks are what you record when actually moving with gps in hand?

  5. I have city navigator on my computer (mapsource) and I have it on my 60csx.

I loaded a bunch of GPS waypoints for beaches in Hawaii. I was able to create a route in mapsource to go from one beach to another. When I try to create the same route on my 60csx it fails and tells me "Route calculation error."

Any ideas on where I should start. I am guessing it is something simple that I am missing or doing wrong?

Another thing....when I try and transfer the route from mapsource to google earth, the route shows up in GE as a straight line, NOT following the road as it did in mapsource.

    Thanks.

  6. Sorry to all those who said they were interested. My DSL router went out...then I just didnt have time to get onto Groundspeak.

If anyone still wants this GPS, it is still available.

You can email me at superdutyatgmail.com Make sure you change at to @

    thanks

  7. I have both 24k topos and City Nav on my 60csx. After doing some searching/reading it seems to switch between the maps I should go to the map page, Menu, Setup Map, and then select or deselect the maps I want.

This seems quite tedious if you want only your topos to show or if you want only your city nav to show. If a person has 100 maps installed, that will take a long time and then to switch back. I suppose most folks just figure out which maps are for their particular area and select/deselect those? Still seems like quite a chore to scroll through a 100+ maps.

Is there any easier way? Or any other way?

    TIA

  8. Etrex Vista for sale. It is in excellent condition. I tried and couldnt find a scratch on it. I hardly used this unit. This is the greyscale model. It has a built in electronic compass and altimeter. You can see all the details here.

Will come with unit and serial cable. I also have some older mapsource topo maps on CD that I will throw in. Unit is WAAS capable. I will look for the original manual and box (I may have both - not sure). If not, I am sure the manual is available online somewhere. This is a great compact GPSr.

Contact me and I can direct you to my ebay feedback.

    $125 shipped in CONUS.

  9. I have been searching for up to date information on the 60csx with poor results and so I am putting this out to the frequent posters here.

What is the largest microSD card that will work on the 60csx?

Is there a good FAQ for this unit? If so where can I find it?

Or a good site with a review of the 60csx features.

    Thanks

Use search function and Google. There is tons of information out there on the 60csx. Any info you find on the 60csx will be "current." The older 60 series is the cx.

My understanding is you can use SDHC cards, but they are only usable to 2gb. So a 4gb card will work, but only the 2gb part of it.

  10. Thanks for the link, very interesting article. Do you like the La Crosse batteries that the unit comes with? Prefer others?

The batts that come with the unit seem fine. I have tried the following rechargeables: Sanyo, Energizer, and Powerex. I recently got the LaCrosse ones and the Eneloops.

I have had very good luck with the Sanyo and Energizer. I just bought some more Sanyos 2700 MAH from Thomas. I am trying to figure out if there is any real need for the 2700 MAH batts vs. the 2000MAH Eneloops.

I am pretty impressed with the eneloops so far. I put some into my Canon 420EX flash unit and it worked great. I took them straight out of the pkg, and did NOT charge them before use...so I figure it has probably been at least a few weeks since they were charged. The flash unit is considered to be a high drain device and is pretty demanding. The refresh rate of the flashes was excellent (thought I didn't do any scientific timing experiment or anything). The fact they can sit around and still work a month later is very nice. This means they will function well in remote controls and similar items that are low drain.

So as of right now, I will probably ONLY buy eneloop or equivalent in the future... (unless I find that the eneloops don't perform as well as the higher MAH batts.)

BTW, the eneloops at Thomas were a pretty good price as well. It was the first time I dealt with Thomas and service was good, prompt shipping, etc.

  11. I recently got the 900 from thomas distributing. The price is defintiely right for all the features. I am very impressed with this unit. I rarely have a need to charge or condition more than 4 batteries at a time, particularly now that I got 8 of the eneloops. I tried the eneloops in my Canon flash, WOW they are pretty impressive for refresh speed.

Once you set up the 900 to the discharge and charge rate you want, there isn't much you need to do with it.

I couldn't justify the extra cost for the Maha....I didnt see any added benefits besides being able to charge more batts at a time. Also I pretty much only use aa and aaa rechargeable batts.

Check out this site for some good tips on the 900:

  12. In the Colorado/60CSx comparison it says the 60CSx "supports a more primitive auto routing capability". But in the reviews of the 60CSx I see that it will autoroute across the base map and CN, will recalculate route, has pop-ups on any screen as you approach a turn, etc. Some of these features are not supported on the Colorado. Which GPS has the more effective auto routing capability?

FWIW, I have city nav 2008 on my 60csx and my 2610. Side by side they seem to give the same directions with the same accuracy. I love the 2610 for autorouting, it is a great unit. I am very impressed with the 60csx for autorouting. Obviously it doesnt talk to you like the 2610 (which I turn off regardless) and the screen isnt as big, but the 60csx is excellent at autorouting.

  13. I too am in Southern California, and had nothing but problems with auto-routing on the PN-20. I did have the beta firmware 1.4 which others say solved all the auto-routing issues, but it did not for me. It could not handle routing a simple freeway drive of about 30 miles, with 4 or 5 turns total. It hung on calculating the route, and several others I tried. Perhaps the final 1.4 version is better, but I sent mine back and picked up the 60csx which works great. That said, you can't beat those wonderful Delorme topos and for hiking, caching etc, is a good choice.

The final 1.4 FW did not fix my autorouting issues with the PN20. I too am in So Cal. Some folks have suggested creating the routes on the computer and then transfering to the PN20. FWIW, the delorme computer program routes in seconds. So if you are OK preparing your routes ahead of time and then transferring to PN20, then that will be a good solution.

  14. I currently have a Garmin 60csx and the City Select v7 mapping software. I am getting ready to buy the 2008 Topo software, but I don't know how the two mapping programs will interact on the gpsr. Will both maps overlap on one another on the screen or do you have the capability of selecting which map you want displayed on the screen? For example, can I select the City Select when I am driving and then switch to the Topo when I get our of the car? Any help or answers would be greatly appreciated.

You can have both on your GPS, but you must select which one you want to display.

I have CN 2008 and Topo 2008 on my 60CSX.

How do you select which to display? What are the pros and cons of having one or both displayed at the same time?

  15. If you are expecting your GPS to route you on the roads, then my advice is to stay away from the PN20. I ahve the PN20 and 60csx (recently bought the csx). My opinion is that the PN20 is useless when compared to the csx for autorouting. The PN20 takes minutes to create routes whereas the csx does routes in seconds. The PN20 would lock up regularly on me when doing routes (yes I have the latest FW). I no longer use the PN20 for any autorouting.

I dont GC so i can comment on that aspect. The PN20 seems to be very accurate, it is quick to acquire a signal. The PN20 acquires within 45 seconds everytime, normally much faster. The CSX will typically get a signal quicker, but we are talking seconds.

Both units are able lock and keep a signal very effectively. Both can hold a signal in the house, or on the seat of my truck.

Remember if you want to do any autorouting wtih the csx you gotta buy maps. also if you want topo maps for the csx you gotta buy maps. all the maps come with the PN20.

The PN20 is a nice unit, but I feel it is worthless for autorouting. Some folks here will disagree, but most of the simple routes I have thown at it have been a real challenge for the unit. I dont know about you, but if I need to autoroute from point A to point B I usually dont have 10 minutes to wait for the GPSR to do the calculation....and forget about going off route and a recalculation.
