  1. quote:Originally posted by Woodsters Outdoors:I agree Jeff. Like I said before somewhere else. It's one thing to place something in a cache, it's another to log it. I didn't say it in those words, but that's the gist of it. I think the 'no knives' thing is to protect GC. He can't control whats put in them or taken out. But he will have something to fall back on when the heat is under the collar. Personally I won't place a knife in a cache. Would I take one? Sure if I had something of same value as it to trade with. I also think that a knife is something that should be given to a kid under supervision by their own parents/guardian. As stated, they are responsible for them and not I. Just as I wouldn't want someone to give my child a knife without me knowing it. Brian Very well put. I have been polling some of my co-workers about this topic and have gotten some very intersting answers. Out of 6 ppl 5 would not let anyone younger than 10 have a pocket knife without them knowing it first, 1 thought if the kid is ready for it and younger than 10 it's ok. 5 feel it's ok to carry a pocket knife only if you are going into the woods or hiking or whatever, not just going to walmart, 1 thought it was ok to carry wherever. 5 think that if it is a guideline not to leave a knife as a trade, they wouldn't do it, 1 didn't see an issue with it. All 6 agreed it should be supervised (everyone agrees with that). I used to carry a pocket knife when I was a teenager and my mother had a fit about it. My son, 15, was just given a swiss army style knife by his grandfather. I gave him strict guidelines it is not to leave the house unless we are going caching. It was quite interesting to hear the different views and how they came to the decisions made. I still don't agree with putting knives in caches but I think I understand everyones view on the topic better. And a little side note here, I hope I didn't offend anyone with any comments made by me. Reading back throught the posts some of the replies by others made it seem as the author were shall we say Pi**ed Off. I take no offense to anyones views, and I hope they take no offense to mine. VIVA LA GEOCACHE!!! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Cache me out dammit, I'm in a hurry! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it. -Thomas Jefferson

Go to NYC, they have different accents conpared to where I live on the other side of the state LMAO!!

So when my opinion differs from yours or others it's a "hangup". Ok, sounds pretty close minded to me but hey that's what makes the world go round. 8. Yikes can't imagine losing the GPS. I bought the belt pack for my Magellan and the minute we locate a cache, in it goes and zipped up...hmmm that didn't sound right LOL -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Cache me out dammit, I'm in a hurry! -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it. -Thomas Jefferson
  9. That is a very well put (and long ) statement. I agree that not all GCer's are upstanding citizens of the community and that the caves are a non-renewing resource that should be protected. At the same time they should not be kept a secret to all but a few. They should be enjoyed in a "monitored" sense. How could this be accomplished...good question, got nothing here for that answer. But I would love to be able to explore a cave looking for a cache.
  10. More of an incentive to become a paying member. It worked, you joined . It hasn't really bothered me, i guess because there are only 1 or 2 member only caches in my area. Still, I will be joining soon just to help the site continue into greatness.

  13. quote:Originally posted by jeff35080: Are you now saying that we shouldn't have pocket knives in caches because some lowlife like GeoPirates who stalk caches might come raid the cache? Aren't these pirates adults? Should we only leave McToys for the GeoPirates? Aren't some McToys a choking hazzard They may very well be adults, but from the cases of pirating I have seen on the forums they don't seem to be "adult" by any sense of the meaning. Frankly I don't geocache for what items are in it, but just to find the cache. I have no problems with mctoys or stickers or even stupid friggin marti gras beads that seem to be the rage in my area. LOL, I guess they should be removed to because I'm sure they could be used to strangle someone . I understand everyones idea of having the freedom to be able to place a knife or whatever. I just don't have to agree with it Can I have a loan, I'm low on cache!!
  14. quote:Originally posted by jeff35080: That may be more true than most people would like to admit, would like to see it kept that way for all to enjoy this sport. Of course as the popularity of the game increases so are the chances of caches being found by people just looking for them to rape the contents, GeoPirates Can I have a loan, I'm low on cache!!
  15. quote:Originally posted by jeff35080: I'm glad to know that the crime level in your area is low enough that the local authorities can concentrate on knives in caches. Maybe next we can start worrying about broken glass on the edge of the road..... Yes, our crime rate is low, maybe because they do consider small pocket knives to be a threat. Not that they concentrate on it but certainly don't put them on the "we'll get to it later" shelf. quote:The pen that was supplied in the cache could have easily stabbed me. Do we need to remove all pens from caches? LOL! You could have easily fallen on a stick, let's move all of the caches out of the woods quote:People need to be responsible for their own children and stop expecting the government or GC.com to take care of them. You are absolutely correct but repeated again, I am more concerned with kids who are not supervised finding a knife or matches in a cache and causing damage. It is unfortunate that too many people do not take responsibilty for thier kids actions. In those cases it's nobodies fault but the parents. Can I have a loan, I'm low on cache!!
  16. I am a little disappointed with the sarcastic comments that are made throughout these replies and the silly statements like "having knives in your kitchens" or "keeping hooligans from throwing rocks". I guess I expected a little bit more of a mature attitude rather than a snippy "thanks man you rock" Someone had posted a quote saying any fool can make a rule and every fool will follow it. What kind of comment is that? There should be no rules, let people do whatever they please. Yes, You can find a weapon in just about anything, and I don't care how small a blade is, an knife is a knife and can still cause damage no matter what. Please Jeff, don't take this the wrong way but I know a few local law officers and they were a bit suprised at your comment about the pocket knife. Oh well, go ahead and flame away Can I have a loan, I'm low on cache!! [This message was edited by The Rocket Pack on September 03, 2003 at 06:17 AM.]
  17. Once again, it's not the fact that the geocaching community find a knife in the cache rather the group of hooligans stumbling across the knife or matches and causing more trouble. Now I realize I live in a more urban area and the chance of a cache being unearthed is greater than other rural areas. It just seems why wait for trouble to occur but rather try to be proactive about it and stop it before it ever happens. Everyone sits on thier duff and waits for something to happen before acting on it. Can I have a loan, I'm low on cache!!
  18. quote:Originally posted by Xitron: Sweet that means I can start removing all the items I disapprove of, McToys, cheap stickers, little jars of bubbles, and anything else I don't like. Thanks man you rock! Read it again, items deemed inapropriate (by GC.com) not just cause I think it's junk. If there is a knife in a cache I will remove it, no doubt about it. I will try to contact the owner and give them the option of picking it up of they want it back. You have a good idea with leaving the gift cert. instead of the actual item. Very cool idea!! 19. quote: A majority of the time people log with TNLN, this signals to me that the items are not the goal of caching. I look more forward to just finding the cache and then anything inside is a bonus but not my primary goal. Spending time with the kids in the outdoors enjoying nature is the absolute primary goal. 20. Absolutely! I found a cigar in a cache not long ago. I confiscated it and to make sure it wasn't tampered with, I sparked it up on the way back to the car. I will also be confiscating any swiss army knives, P-38's or Leatherman tools I find. LOL, checking it for tampering huh...sure you were LMAO!! Can I have a loan, I'm low on cache!!

  22. quote:Originally posted by Romad_Pilot: quote:Originally posted by The Rocket Pack: -Snip- I for one will be on the lookout in caches for items that have been deemed inapropriate and will REMOVE them and log the item was removed. That is my story and I'm sticking to it :-) Maybe you and those who feel the same as you should get with TPTB, maybe you can be a GeoSheriff. Having the burden of looking out for the stupidity of others is a noble task, by all means press on! Well lord knows there is enough stupidity to go around and it's no burden just a common sense responsibility. Course I am just a newbie city boy, what the heck do I know Can I have a loan, I'm low on cache!!
  23. quote:Originally posted by Romad_Pilot:If your deathly afraid of a multi-tool or small swiss army knife, stay in your home and lock the doors. If more paranoid hyper protective do-gooders would do this we could let natural selection take over! If GC.com told you to only use a magic marker because a sharp pencil or pen could be a weapon, would you start replacing all the pens and pencils with markers? For crying out loud, let this whining stop! Hmmm, rules are put in place for a reason and I don't consider voicing an opinion whining thank you very much :-). I think the concern is not everyone is "deathly afraid" of the small knives, rather who could find them. My point was was young children (including teens) accendentally finding a cache and possibly harming themselves or others. I for one will be on the lookout in caches for items that have been deemed inapropriate and will REMOVE them and log the item was removed. That is my story and I'm sticking to it :-) Can I have a loan, I'm low on cache!!
  24. Check out the Palm web page. They were selling factory refurbished palms for insanely cheap prices. I saw a color palm for under $200!! Can I have a loan, I'm low on cache!!
  25. quote:Originally posted by SamLowrey: I didn't realize that was the way it is supposed to be. I guess I can now murder someone in my home and it is no one's business. Hmmmm, no, it fails that test. Ok now you are just being silly and a bit sarcastic. The whole topic was privacy of taking pictures in public of strangers. Your home obviously is not public. The fact is that when I walk out of my house I am in the PUBLIC view, no longer private. If you happen to show up on camera in the background from a news crew are you going to sue the station for airing it. Anyway, I think this topic has been beat into the ground whew!!
