  1. I would really really hate that... One of the things that annoys me is when I have a printout and haven't decrypted the clue BUT! Remember: -You're the cache owner, so it's your call -As someone pointed out, many of us can now "read" ROT13 -You can get a little PDA application to decrypt it if you have one -If it protects the main cache from being muggled, then it's a good call -And... all you've got to do is raise the difficulty a bit I can't believe I'm saying this... this is going to come back to haunt me when we're looking for that cache next month
  2. Well there's sentimental value and then there's your Fathers War Medal. It was sentimental to me as it was placed with my girlfriend when I introduced her to this madness, and as it started out in her hometown of Portishead and was en route to Galway it meant a little to me, and when I show it to her she'll be surprised. All it is is a small furry toy. So sentimental, yes, but if it was lost I could live with it.
  3. Well, this has had a happy ending...! Snells Pace has come across the bug in another cache and, with a stroke of genius he's probably not aware of yet, left it in the South-West TB exchange. Enter the owner of that cache, Mike from the Molinnis Crew, who is coming to Ireland for our event in Sligo at the end of the month. And guess what he's bringing... my TB! Thanks everyone.
  4. I made my car a TB and began to log all the caches I'd driven to. After about 40 caches I had about 6,000 miles up and I haven't logged every cache yet
  5. I've been thinking about this cache, it does need a little consideration. Obviously, a 5/5, 11-mile hike taking 6-7 hours is a lot for one cache, although you do bag one of the Four Peaks (of Britain and Ireland). So, what I'm going to do is the following: Carrauntohill does not stand alone in the Macgillycuddy Reeks. Nearby peaks Beenkeragh at 1010m and Caher 1001m are the second and third highest peaks in Ireland. I don't know if you're still coming over next year but we will be climbing there in the spring to check on the caches and will be hoping to place caches on Beenkeragh and Caher. I also see your point about having a "mere mortal" cache, or a failsafe if the weather is too poor. What I'll do is put a cache at the foot of the Devil's Ladder, so, (a bit like "Pyg'n Hell" on Snowdon and the nearby micros in the carparks), there'll be a cache that won't disappoint hikers, who, like yourselves, fell foul of the elements. There'll be an event next spring, and if you still are coming over we'll time it around your holiday. As for finding 5/5, big puzzle caches or 400 mile drive ones... you're joining an elite group when you do, and that's satisfaction enough. Sure, it's only 1 more find, but there's a great deal more pleasure in finally getting to the box compared to a drive-by cache.
  6. In that case I think you might have some that are too small SP So *that's* what happened to Moronic Atomic Mini-Micro 1! I know Oxford has a reputation for drugs problems but never in my wildest dreams did I think someone would snort one of my caches... SP No no no, not snorted. It was injected intravenously, like in that film, Innerspace
  7. Slightly off topic, but the worst song I ever heard was called "Prime Mover" by "Zodiac Mindwarp". The lyrics are reproduced in their full awfulness: Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Well I Love Tv And I Love T. Rex I Can See Through Your Skirt I've Got X-Ray Spex I Came From The Sky Like A 747 I'm The Bad Boy Baby I Fell Out Of Heaven Sex Fuhrer Baby I'm A Love Dictator Blitzkrieg Romance I'm A Cool Dominator P-R-I-M-E Prime Mover Baby You're M-I-N-E I'm The Groover Well I'm Christ In Shades I'm A Napalm God Your Lipstick Flickers Round My Lightning Rod You Fever Pitch Bi**h You Love To Tease Well I'm A Hot Dog Daddy Up On Your Knees Sex Fuhrer Baby I'm A Love Dictator Blitzkrieg Romance I'm A Living Detonator P-R-I-M-E Prime Mover Baby You're M-I-N-E I'm The Groover Yeah I'm The Sex Fuhrer Baby I'm A Love Dictator You're A Disco Reptile A Funky Alligator P-R-I-M-E Prime Mover Baby You're M-I-N-E I'm The Groover
  8. Klaus where you *really* highlighting the plight of the larger species of cache (the lesser spotted great-cache) ? The lesser spotted "large cache" (Ginormoeous Cacheous) is an interesting species. Rarely seem in the wild, it is a reclusive type characterised by it's immobility. However, as said previously, you can't hide it everywhere, but it sure is fun if it's full of stuff. And if you've got an old PC/motherboard/encyclopedia set/kitchen sink someone might want, what better place is there.
  9. erm - sorry for the late response... It was a post that was half in jest, but half serious too. Let's flesh it out. There are currently 5 sizes, virtuals excluded. A Micro is described as a 35mm Film Canister.. fair enough, we know what that is. A Small is descibed as holding a log book and not much else. A Regular cache is a "Rubbermaid, Ammo Box" A Large cache is a "5 gallon Bucket" And the catch all - Other Now, see, search Google Images for a "5 Gallon Bucket". Then search Google Images for "Rubbermaid" And then search it for "Ammo Box". See what I mean - what size is an Ammo Box? What size is "Rubbermaid"? And there are larger caches than a 5 gallon Bucket. And what about a 25 litre paint bucket... etc etc etc So why not go and categorize the sizes by physical size. eg - Micro - 20mm x 35mm Small 15cm x 15cm Regular 30cm x 30cm Large up to 1m x 2m Makes more sense rather than a rather vague description. As for ginormous - ever find a cache that is much, much bigger than you a) expected thought could be hidden in the location and c) was listed as regular on the cache page. Some where between enormous and gigantic. By the way, this "I hate this and that kind of cache size (usually Micros)" debate, is in my opinion, superfluous. There's posts in here touching on the kids not liking micros because there's no trade, that people go to locations and think that maybe a physical could have been placed, and so on. Now I don't have kids, but I concede that point. However... Ulium hit it on the head. The hider can do what he/she/they want to do, it's their choice what they hide, where they hide it, and criticism regarding cache sizes is just one of these things that are moaned about, and I wonder why. There's other caches. If you don't like micros, don't find them. If you're not mad about virtuals, go find another cache somewhere else. It's a shared hobby with diverse opinions, sure - but giving out about other people's cache sizes... hmm. Get out there and find them!
  10. Galway - 20 caches in one day's driving, best scenery in the world...
  11. They should add "Ginormous" as a cache size. That's a great word.
  12. Prospective Attendees so far: The Two Wrinklies (Barnsley, Yorks., UK) Craigsbar and Amjay (ex London, now Galway, Ireland) Donnacha (Greystones, Wicklow, Ireland) The Rookie (Galway, Ireland) and meeee!
  13. (*raises glass to nobby nobbs*) (*waves to the barmaid for another round*) (*returns with large jamesons, pork scratchings, darts, change for the pool table and the barmaids telephone number*) Carlsberg don't do pubs, but if...
  14. I always write my cache find writeup in Notepad as a backup before trying to put it on the cache page. These database/sql problems are becoming all too frequent (and no, not just at the weekends), and there's also a timeout on the log, if you exceed it, your writeup is gone.
  15. Hi all, Just a shameless plug for an up-and-coming event cache in Sligo (North-East of Ireland) on October 30th. Cache page can be found here, aim is a morning coffee, pleasantries and a TB swop, as well as an ascent of scenic Benbulbin overlooking Sligo at 1500ft. Travel within Ireland is straightforward (if you know where you're going ) along National (A) roads. Sligo is 2 driving hours from Galway, 6 from Cork, 2 from Derry, 3 from Dublin and around 4 from Belfast. If anyone from the UK is interested in coming, and it would be great if you could, consider the following travel options: Knock (Connaught) Airport is 45 mins from Sligo. Flights are provided there by: (price for flights on Friday Oct 29th - Monday Nov 1st) MyTravelLite (ex Birmingham) (£70) Ryanair (ex London-Stanstead) (£100) bmibaby (ex Manchester) (£88) Aer Arann (ex Liverpool) (£105) Sligo Airport is serviced by several daily flights to and from Dublin provided by Aer Arann (60 euro). Dublin Airport can be reached by cheap Ryanair flights from the following locations: Aberdeen, Birmingham, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, Durham, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London (Gatwick, Luton, Stanstead), Manchester, Newcastle. You can also fly per Ryanair from Stanstead to Derry. Alternatively, ferry travel is avaliable from Wales, Scotland and England (even France) See - there's no excuse, it's never been easier! And if you need a lift, let me know.
  16. Good stuff Dan, enjoyed your caches in Clare recently. See you round Galway sometime
  17. Did you have the Jameson's before you turned around, or before you went to bed erm... it wasn't really a funny incident, and I can't say I want to joke about it.
  18. Good stuff, look forward to seeing it Thread closed
  19. How to s**t yourself while caching: -Get up at 5am to go caching. -Avoid a head-on collision with a drunken driver on a blind bend by roughly three inches, having to swerve onto HIS side of the road to avoid HIS car. Of course, being only two miles from home and severly shaken, I turned around and went back to bed. But not until I had had a large Jameson to calm the nerves. And a quick change of pants of course.
  20. I'm wondering if this thread can be pinned as there have been several threads recently looking for help/advice/information on Geocaching in Ireland. In the absence of a dedicated Ireland forum - due to small cacher numbers - there have been many posts in the United Kingdom forum looking for information on caching in Ireland. There is a website up under http://www.geocachingireland.com with the following items you may find helpful. - Information on geocaching in Dublin, superimposed on a DART (metro) map. - An interactive county-by-country map of the country, querying cities as waypoints and showing the nearest caches. - Information about pending event caches. - A chatroom (usually empty ). - A link to the geocaching_ireland egroup, where almost 40 cachers communicate with each other. - A contact e-mail address manned by Bootle and Donnacha, both based in the Dublin area who can assist you with queries or questions, or forward your mail to local cachers who we know all over the island. Happy Holidays! Klaus23
  21. This is exactly what I thought recently. By the way, the site does not rely entirely on voluntary contributions as they raise unknown amounts of revenue through diverse advertising, and they also run a profitable shop, again supported by members who buy the stuff. Without access to site, which is unfair to members, there is nothing. And having it down for hours on end must be annoying to people who are out in the sticks looking for caches and log on to the site remotely needing hints etc. If it's a commercial enterprise, then we, the "Premium" members, and the people who buy stuff from the shop, and the other cachers who don't contribute financially but find and place caches, therefore promoting the game - we are the customers, and deserve to have a functioning website to use. Claiming that "poor geocaching.com" is underfunded does not cut the mustard with me. And I also feel sorry for the volunteers that act as moderators. They deserve to get paid for what they do, after all, without them the whole thing would not work.
  22. You're on the right track - just "grab" the TB back into your possession, and then re-release an item with the duplicate/spare tag, then put it in a cache. Of course, the problem would be if the one presumed lost turned up somewhere...
  23. Thanks folks for the WAP link to gc.com I never knew that existed - it's going to make my life a lot easier!
  24. I guess it's always the last good cache that stands out most I guess, so here's my (current) top 5 caches: 1. Solas Cache 2. Galtybeg Cache 3. Slieve League (Bunglas) 4. Southside Pub Crawl 5. The Pogues' Broad Majestic Shannon
