  1. There have been numerous statements to the effect that setting up a co-site for locationless caches would be relegating them to second-class status or spinning them off to die. I disagree. Creating a section specifically tailored to this activity will enable it to develop on it’s own and open up possibilities that could never have happened under the current system. This new section will only be second rate if those of us who create and seek out locationless caches let it be second rate. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/

I wasn't worried about spending the $30 - $40 for them, but what they hey am I gonna do with a thousand small ziplocs????? Don't ask why I knew about these, and no I'm not the seller. 3 X 4 4 X 4 http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  3. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:I didn't see any guards at the trail split, but I'm sure if I took 10 steps up the closed trail, I'd have been surrounded by armed MP's within seconds. You might be surprised. I can’t speak for every location and obliviously some locations will be locked tighter than others, but I have sure seen some serious holes in security at some bases. For example, I am familiar with a certain military instillation near me. Just last week (when we went to condition orange) they installed bunkers with armed troops at the main gates to augment the normal gate guards checking id’s. However, if you were to visit a nearby state park (which has a cache, mine ) you would be able to walk right onto this base with only a sign to stop potential intruders. There’s not even a fence. I just hope that any potential terrorists remember to use the front gate and don’t notice the back door open. Sorry for ranting, back to the topic. I am only vaguely familiar with the area around the Naval Station in Everett. Since the threat level only increased last week, I would not be surprised that what now is a heavily armed detachment of several troops was just a couple of guards standing watch at the gate last week. Personally I would not have a problem searching for a clue (written on a sign or tag) in a location like this. I would feel a bit more conspicuous looking for a micro cache. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/

It was on Ripley's and several other TV shows. I think I remember what your talking about. I can't recall what the place was called, but I thought it was in southern Utah. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  5. Voicing my support from afar. Good luck dealing with them or not dealing with them if that's what you choose. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  6. EDIT: Took me so long to type my post that it is no longer relevant.
  7. A temporary suspension on new locationless caches until the new system and structure are in place sounds like a very reasonable compromise. It wouldn't prevent anyone from logging the existing ones, and persons who may desire to list a new one would still be able to do so in just a few months. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  8. In my opinion a mapping receiver is not needed and would be overkill for just occasional caching. There are a lot of sources online for maps. If a cache takes me significantly off road I like to check out the area on www.lostoutdoors.com They offer a topo maps and aerial photos of locations. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  9. Are you saying that your Garmin and Magellan units will always read the exact same distance and bearing off from each other? Or are you saying that sometimes you Garmin is dead on and your Magellan is slightly off and other times it’s the other way around? I suspect the latter. Remember that these are not extremely precise devices. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/

You can buy a good compass for less than $10. I don't know anything about an electic compass, but the arrow on my silva has never run out of batteries. As for the one at the Groundspeak store, its alright. It' good enough to get a general bearing to say within 5°. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/

  12. A coworker of mine once logged on to netflix from work on a community pc and selected the option to use cookies to “remember” him. Of course some time later another coworker went to netflix and it automatically logged on as the other guy. Hee, hee. Needless to say the first guy was a little surprised when he started to receive soft-core porn of a different sexual orientation than his own. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  13. About the only thing more annoying would be if they weren’t tourists, and they gave their new cache an almost identical name as the existing one. PS I’m not talking about placing a cache that replaced one that no longer exists http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  14. I’m not from the Orlando area (actually I’m at the opposite corner of the country), but everywhere you go you can find a Walmart (actually 10 of them in the Orlando area). They usually have the Venture in stock and are asking about $160 – $170. The sales people don’t know what they’re talking about but as long as you know what you’re buying that doesn’t really matter. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  15. I thought this all sounded familiar. A little bit of history: The County has Spoken!! http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  16. It sounds like the problem is that you didn’t describe the reason why this is a good location for a virtual cache to the approvers satisfaction because you didn’t want to give away the surprise of the location to the cache seekers. If this is the case simply email back to the approver who denied the cache a description of the location and why it would make a good virtual cache. That way the approver can do his job of making sure that we don’t have virtual caches on every street corner, and you can retain the surprise of the cache for the future seekers. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  17. I would suggest replying to their email but an email just doesn't convey laughter very well. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/

  19. quote:Originally posted by digi62:Hi from Wyoming, There is a great deal of National Forest and Wilderness land in this state. It is NOT lawfull to cache on either of them. Cache = trash, as far as the USFS (US Forest Service)and others are concerned. I've spent some time working with USFS trail crews in the backcountry. We regularly run into caches left by backcountry users. Tents, stoves, plastic sheeting, buckets, fuel, rope, tools, food, you name it. These are packed out. If the cacher is found they get a (federal) ticket/fine. Ok, so geocaches are not supposed to be large piles of "trash". By the rules, on National Forest and Wilderness, it is caching and the rules are enforcable. Just something to think about when you are in the great outdoors. I have'nt seen any post on this topic yet. The agencies that are responsible for Nat. Forest and Wilderness in Wyoming are aware of goecaching... digi62 out. Actually there have been lots of threads about this. Use the search feature to find them. It seems that every now and then some one who just created an account and has never logged a cache posts to the forums that caching is banned. Somehow they are almost never able to cite supporting documentation or provide official points of contacts within the respective agencies. Kind of funny the way that happens. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  20. I have a cache I spruced up the other day. 31 online logs 39 in the logbook. Not too bad. I had a cache in a freeway rest area. I would estimate about 1/3 of the finders logged it online. I think the easy to find theory is right on. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
  21. I was out this morning and other than when I was under fairly heavy tree cover my EPE floated around 14 – 15 feet (no WASS I still use an antique). The real comment I wanted to make was about the concept that the government is “causing” these reception problems. Absolutely no way! If they do monkey with the system they provide detailed information on what areas will be affected and when. We use the system to go out doors and have a little fun or get driving directions or sound smart when we state that right here sunset will be at 17:10:43 tonight, but there are many more users of the system that depend on accurate and reliable signals. I haven’t heard of airplanes crashing short of the runways or ships running aground in the fog recently. These were the types of uses that were in mind when SA was turned off and the reason why the government would not intentionally disrupt the system. http://home.earthlink.net/~whidbeywalk/
