  1. Hello!

I don't own a car, and don't know if I would become addicted to driving around and finding as many as possible if I did. This is just my thoughts on all the pollution geocaching generates. How much fossil energy is burned a day because of geocaching is hard to estimate, but I'm sure the atmosphere could do without!

I commend you for geocaching for 5 years and 200 cache finds without driving. How did you manage it?

The OP never said to avoid *all* driving.

The solution is to find caches near where you are, or combine cache drives with other errands when possible.

I read the OP as calling into question the practices of high numbers cachers, and I too would like to hear their defense.

Why do they need to defend it?

How many of the caches the OP found were put there and maintained by people that drove cars to get there?

I drive to get mine. But what I like to do is find a spot I can look for a large number of caches from one parking spot. I like to drive near some caches and then I hike to get as many as I can. I have hiked as far as 8.5 kms from my parking spot (round trip). I want to go back next year and do the full 30 kms.

I have also searched for some on my way home from work or on the way to or back from shopping. But I have went out and drove to locations just to geocache. I own a vehicle because I want to get places when I need or want to.

I don't think it is all that bad. I also feel that if it wasn't for cars, it wouldn't have become as big as it it now.

  2. Hi!

You can still use "Send to GPS" in Windows 10 to transfer individual geocaches into your GPSr. You have to use IE11 ( still found in Windows 10 ) and you have to define geocaching.com as a trusted website.

    1. Make sure you have the latest Garmin Communicator Plugin installed

    2. Open IE11 ( Start => All apps => Windows Acessories => Internet Explorer )

    3. Tools => Internet options => Security tab => Trusted sites ( green check mark ) => Sites

    4. Click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box

    5. Add www.geocaching.com as a trusted site

    6. Close => OK => restart the browser

    Now it should work.

    Thanks. Works for me.

  3. Wow. This will be a trip to remember. I would check stock and prices before deciding which way to go. On most vehicles you will find a better deal in the US. But now that I think about it, with the poor Canadian dollar it might be close to the same or better.

Hope everything works out for you. The leaves starting turning in Nova Scotia last week so things should look really good once you finally get here.

  4. I agree with others. It is pretty safe as long as your careful. It would carry some of the same risks as jogging, hiking and so on. One issue with it is paying too much attention to your gps and not your surroundings. Pay attention to what is going on around you and who is there. Like others said, if the location doesn't feel safe then move on.

In some ways it is safer then running. With running you would normally have a route and regular time you do it. With geocaching you are all over the place.

A cemetery in the right area would be fine. In a remote location it might be a bit of an issue. Check the map, in most areas there should be plenty of caches that are located in areas that would be safe for you to search for them.

  5. I haven't done a multi yet so correct me if I'm wrong. Unless the GC code is in the final location, wouldn't it be impossible to log a find without the code? The location wouldn't be on the map. But they could sign and tale a ftf prize because they are there.

As for logging it. They were the "first to find" it. They were not the first to complete the process.

  6. As the title says pay it forward geocoin adoptions, I have 10 activated coins that I will be adopting out to the first 10 people who has 15 geocoins or less that replies to this post. I have all 10 geocoins. I will send you an adoptions request, you accept and set up the mission. When the mission has been created, let me know and I will place the coin in a cache. The coin will be yours so you can have it try to come to you or anything you want.

My kids and I just got into Geocaching a couple of weeks ago. We would love to adopt a Geocoin.

    Thanks

I will send you an adoption request. You can give it a mission and when it is done, I will place it in a cache.

Thank you. My kids are really excited. I set the mission for the coin.

  7. I'm new to it but I have done both. i drove to some and then drove off. One day I walked 2 kms to grab two. Then a week later I hiked 8.5 kms to get 4/6. There is more on that trail. I think there is about 30 kms and I plan on finding as many as I can. I will have to plan the deeper ones.

There are some in another area that I want to get using my Jeep.
