  1. Same here but several of those links are dead or do not ultimately provide downloadable data for free but a good resource nonetheless. When I was up to 47 states I came across this excellent resource. A few years ago you could download free DRG's from Geocomm but now there's a fee, but it comes to aroune 50 cents per map. You can still get DEM's for free from there which is nice for elevation data.
  2. FREE DRG topo maps for all 50 states. Thanks Sputnik for getting me to finally finish that page. I found more than one link for some states and I'll be adding them in soon.
  3. OK, did a little updating, this is what I have so far. I'm up to 38 states.
  4. Another nice feature of this app. is that you can run multiple programs receiving the nmea data simultaneously. Works great on my computer running xp.
  5. Good idea Sputnik. I already have a partial list and various links saved. I'll have to try to get them together in some kind of order. Here is Idaho. The nice thing about these files is that they are georeferenced and can be imported and automatically calibrated into Oziexplorer and I believe Memory-Map as well (Greymane?). They are high resolution scans of the original maps and not lower resolution "tiles" that are used on Terraserver (thats where USAPhotoMaps images come from). I'm not knocking the program, It's a fantastic app and just one of many ways of using GIS.
  6. Screenshots, that's what I thought. That's one way to do it but you can get USGS digital maps free for most states. Even Oklahoma. Or you can use USAPhotoMaps but the images your getting aren't as high in resolution as the ones you get when downloading USGS DRG's which is my preference but it's nice to have so many options available on the Internet. It just blows my mind the price some of these guys are charging for USGS topo's on CD when you can get them yourself absolutely free.
  7. I don't see where you can do this unless your talking about grabbing screenshots.
  8. Free Texas DRG's here. Free Arizona DRG's here. I still have and use my Garmin GPSMap76S. I'm a bit of a gadget geek I guess. I even still have my old yellow eTrex but I may list it on Ebay soon. At least the wife thinks I should
  9. Place your mouse pointer over the roads and you'll get the correct numbers and names.
  10. Try gpsgate. I have not had a need for this but did find it in a google search. Looks like it's for a pocket pc but it may also work on a regular pc. If you try it, let us know if it works. snip-it from web page: Using GpsGate you can connect normal NMEA GPS applications to Garmin USB GPS receivers. Udate: The 1.10 beta version for the pc has the garmin usb setting. I don't have anything to test it with.
  11. There is another little known interactive mapping website out there. This will give you a close up map showing a new cache I just placed yesterday. These maps are panable and zoomable and if you click on my cache icon you'll go to the cache page. Iv'e also included a link in my cache description for a form that you enter your starting address into and it will get you a map with directions to the parking area for the cache. You can also view these maps in full screen.
  12. I do something like this with a pocket pc that has bluetooth and I use it with a bluetooth GPS receiver that fits nicely under my hat. But I still also use my regular Garmin Map76S. Haven't been able to switch entirely over to the wireless setup yet as I like features of both setups. A little bit of a gadget geek I guess.
  13. Nice site, thanks for the link. Already added it to my profile page.
  14. When you say communication is established, are you seeing nmea data in the Ozi nmea screen?
  15. You can't do this within Oziexplorer but a program called GeoConv will convert an Ozi track to a route and reduce the number of points as desired.
  16. Just came across BeeLineGPS. It's not yet released but I really like this feature: Active waypoints Setup active waypoints to play a sound file when they are within a programmable range Have BeeLineGPS alert when you are near a geocache.

    Format

The coordinate system used by GPS is called ECEF (earth centered, earth fixed) and is stored internally in this format. This format is converted and displayed to whatever format you select from your setup menu.
  18. An easier way to do this is after you do your screen capture, place 3 waypoints on the currently loaded map as if you were calibrating the map, save the waypoints, then load/calibrate your new map image and when you select point 1, click the "Wp" button and a window will pop up with the 3 waypoints. Select one to automatically enter the coordinates for point 1 and then set point 1 on the map in the same spot where the waypoint was. Repeat this for the other 2 points and save.

  20. I would go with the Pocket PC with bluetooth and then get a bluetooth GPS receiver. I download topo's for free and use Oziexplorer on my PC as well as my Pocket PC. Here's a screenshot of how it looks on the PPC.
