  1. Should I wait until they log it and then ask to meet up with them to change the card? I realized that the TB dog tag does have the tracking number. So thankfully they'll be able to log it. The card I attached also has the bug's page. Or will leaving it as it is as long as the dog tag is attached be okay. Here's a picture.
  2. Thanks! I knew I could count on a quick answer from you. Hopefully there won't be many Easter cachers. TB will have to wait until after church.
  3. What's the difference between the TB# and the Tracking # anyway?
  4. I used the TB# instead of the Tracking # on the card I attached to it. If that's wrong I'd better go snag it out of the cache today before it gets picked up.
  5. We just released our 2nd bug. This one is for my daughter. My bug is still sitting in the cache I released him to. Sometimes I'm so tempted to go get him and put him somewhere else, but that defeats the purpose doesn't it?
  6. I know I'm impatient. It has only been 9 days since I dropped my first TB, but it seems like 30. I was hoping that someone would have picked him up. I placed him in a new cache with 2 or 3 finds before my visit. Only 1 other person has found the cache. They didn't pick him up because they didn't have anything to swap. I guess this is the where I have to let go of any expectations I may have so that I don't obsess about it.
  7. I got mine through Amazon (free shipping) along with some other things I was ordering. I think it was about $12 more than Wal-Mart.
  8. I love my vista hcx. I have City Navigator installed on it. You'll need a micro sd card and a cd of City Navigator. I love it for driving. It doesn't speak to you, but it does have a nice display of each turn or direction you need to take. It gives one beep when a turn is coming up and then a double beep when you're actually ready to make the turn. I often let my 12yo read out the directions to me when we're driving. I don't have a dashboard stand for it yet. I'm sure that would make it easier. Remember that the display is smaller than one designed primarily for car use. Since I'm pretty good with directions and maps I don't rely on it as heavily. I'm very happy with how quickly it recalculates when I venture off it's original suggested route.
  9. I have a vista hcx and use a 1gb card. I have all of Florida from City Navigator and Topo 2008 stored on it. I haven't bothered to see how much space I have left. I would have bought a 2gb card, but couldn't find one at any of the stores within a few miles of me. I was anxious to get my maps on so I settled for a 1gb.
  10. Found this new addition to the Boxcar Children series of books while at the library this week. It's for ages 9 to 12. Book Description One day in the park, the Aldens' dog, Watch, comes across a mysterious box with a note inside. "Congratulations!" the note says. "You've found it!" The box is part of a fun new treasure-hunting game, and soon Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny are looking all over town for cleverly hidden boxes. But they're not the only ones on the trail for clues! When several of the treasure boxes go missing, the game is ruined for everyone. Who would steal the boxes-and why? http://www.amazon.com/Watch-Found-Boxcar-C...0369&sr=8-1
  11. Like many others have posted I also didn't realize people enjoyed reading the logs. I didn't even know that the hiders received e-mails each time someone posts a log for their cache. Maybe because I'm new to geocaching I like to chat about it, but for some reason I thought people would thing I was cuckoo for writing more descriptive logs. After finding this thread I realized that I can toss that idea out with the trash.
  12. Couldn't you attach a cache to an existing bouy? I know that in the Florida Keys there are bouys around coral reefs for the boats to anchor to so that they don't drop anchors onto the reef. Of course you'd need the proper permission. It's not the same idea that the OP had, but still something off shore. Or do those type of caches already exist?
  13. We drove out to the forest and took a mile hike to a beautiful birding trail to place the bug in a new cache. Since someone recommended to place in a new cache with only a few finds, I found one that had only 2 finds since it was placed on 2/15. I knew it was a small cache, but I didn't realize that it was a small round lock & lock. It was hanging underneath a wooden bench at the end of a boardwalk on the trail. I looped the rope attached to the cache through my bug's cable. Both were hung from the hook under the bench, completely hidden from sight. Was this wrong to do? Should I have only left the bug if it would fit into the cache? Should I go back out to the cache and remove the bug?
  14. We recently picked up a Sea Shell Geocoin. It was released near Tampa, FL. We picked it up in S. Florida and thought it deserved a day at the beach. Its mission was to travel to the California coast and then back to Florida again. Can you spot the bronze sea shell?
  15. I have included on the laminated tag the Tracking Number, the url to the Bug's page. I did not include my own e-mail address since I figured that the finder could contact me from the Bug's page. Do I do anything with the Bug's reference number? Is there anything else I need to add or do before placing him in a cache? Also, how do I find caches that have a high rate of finds in my area or a TB hotel nearby?
  16. Shoot, too bad my TB isn't near you. I'm just getting ready to release my first bug. It has a music oriented theme. I've listed a variety of places or events that the bug would like to visit. Bonnaroo is on that list. This bug also has a desire to meet Robert Plant. He and Allison Krauss are playing Bonnaroo this year. sniff, sniff
  17. Is there a way to add a hard return to make sentences appear on a line by themselves?
  18. I need to be more observant about these things. I had my 2 kids with me and a friends 3 kids. They were all so excited to open the cache that I barely saw the log. I didn't even realize that there was a geocoin (really a small shell) until one of the kids saw the tracking number on the back. In all the chaos I do remember seeing that someone had found the cache earlier today. Maybe that's who dropped the coin. I've added it to my watchlist to see what happens next.
  19. The last log showed it in another cache on 2/9. Should I log it as found in the cache we found it in or wait for someone to log it as dropped in the cache we found it in? How long should I wait before logging it?
  20. Thanks for the info. I'm so glad I didn't post it incorrectly. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to drop it at home before I left. I'm bummed that the bug lost out on 50 miles, but hopefully the owner won't hate me since I helped it gain 208 miles. So many new things to learn.
  21. I picked up a bug about 60 miles from my home. Came home and wanted to drop it and grab it again so that I can move it 300 miles in another direction. I thought that I could simply add an entry into a cache near home and drop the bug into it. Then make another entry into the same cache to pick the bug up. Is that okay to do though I never physically put it into the cache? I understand that I need to drop it so that it will actually gain the originally 60 miles from home and then the 300 on the 2nd trip. I don't want to screw up anyone's logs.
  22. Brought home a TB from a day trip about 50 miles away from home. Here are the options, what would you do? Find a NEW cache near home and drop the TB. Find a FOUND cache near home and drop the TB? Hold on to the TB until you're out of town again to gain even more miles for the TB? Place in a cache near home that you know has a high frequency of visitors? Who cares, just drop the dang bug!
  23. The kids and I purchased three TB's. We've come up with what we think will be cute TB's with different missions. Do you like to release them to travel indefinately or do you like to have them complete a mission and come home? Also, can you alter a bug's mission once it has been released?
  24. I just bought the Garmin Vista Hcx for $233 from Amazon. It was $22 more than the Legend Hcx. Wal-Mart had the two units for almost the same price, maybe a few dollars less.
  25. #1 - When you decide to make a quick cache stop on the way home, be sure you're appropriately dressed. Shorts and crocs don't really work well trying to walk through an overgrown path. #2 - Make sure you know what poison ivy looks like. Not sure if we encountered any, but quickly realized it's something important to know. #3 - If you have 2 kids, they're inevitably going to fight over who gets to choose the treasure and one will surely be bummed if they weren't the one to find the cache. #4 - Don't try hunting a micro in the bushes on your very first try. #5 - No where in all the newbie threads did I see this one mentioned. TICKS TICKS TICKS. Dress appropriately and check everyone for those evil brown creatures after emerging from the bushes. We had fun, but I'm still paranoid about the ticks. I should have known better and thought about them ahead of time. The micro I briefly hunted for was placed by friend. We wanted to make his cache our first, but I realized early on that I needed to get some regular size caches under our belts. The two small/regular size caches we found were fairly simple. After reading the Crazy Cache Boxes thread I was worried that we'd never find a cleverly hidden cache. The kids had fun and I got the hang of the GPSr fairly quick. I was concerned that we weren't really close to the cache when it said we were. I remember reading a post that said you can't assume it's right under your feet. You have to think about a 20-40 foot radius. In our two caches we were literally right on top of it when it told us we were. Maybe beginner's luck.
