  1. Okay, now I'm creeped out! We've been caching for the last year here in Central Florida. Never once did I think about a snake while traipsing through the woods for a cache. I recently started a Geocaching Club with our homeschool group. We hunt once a month. Would anyone care to post a list of do's/dont's regarding snakes?
  2. Hi There. 2nd things first... it's likely that it was dropped on Nov 12 from the cache log... but not logged as dropped... two tb's dropped by the owner but not named.. or logged there. Just a possible. I see the Wyoming was logged as what looks like a 'discover' but logged as taken to BC. No activity on the cacher since then... I am going to have a look at the local clubs sites... they may not be active here, but might be somewhere. Glad to see someone else seems to care. Doug Good sleuthing! I will remember to check the TB's owner's cache finds before jumping to assumptions. The TB's owner was caching here in FL and found the cache 8 days before I did. He logged that he took 2 bugs and dropped 2 bugs. One of them he logged into the cache. The other, his own replacement bug, he did not log into the cache. Sadly, I did not find a long lost bug.
  3. The last time it was seen was in 2006 in Wyoming. I found it today in Florida. It was not listed as being in the cache. It showed UNKNOWN LOCATION. The TB is a replacement from the original and has the COPY tag on it. I couldn't find any spot in the logs where the owner dropped the replacement. I logged it with a GRABBED IT. Hope that was the correct thing to do. Kind of excited that I could move along a bug that has been missing for 2 years.
  4. My eTrex Vista hcx goes dim if it has been out in the cold. Happened one night while camping and the temps got down into the low 30's F. Today I took it out of the car after a night in the 30's. Same thing. It quickly comes back once it warms up.
  5. I recently dropped two bugs and forgot to write down their tracking numbers. Couldn't go back since they I dropped them while on vacation. I'd like to fix the logs if possible. I sent notes to the owners, but neither has responded. One was grabbed and the other must still be there. Is there a way to fix without the tracking numbers?
  6. Just upgraded to the AT&T Tilt with Windows Mobile 6. I don't have a clue on how to get it to work for caching. Any suggestions?
  7. I placed my first bug back in February in new cache. It sat for months and I was very tempted to go get it to move to another cache. Yesterday I got an e-mail about it being picked up. YEAH!!! So glad I waited it out.
  8. I put my very first bug in a new cache that I thought would draw a lot of cachers. Not too far out considering we've got some buried deep in the nearby National Forest. That was in February. It has only been found twice since then. The first cacher didn't realize he didn't have to trade for the bug and left it there. The next cacher didn't even mention it. I contacted them and they said it was still there, but they weren't sure if they would be caching soon so they didn't take it. The last find was in May. I'm very tempted to go get it and place it somewhere else, but that sort of defeats the whole purpose doesn't it?
  9. I sent three messages on Friday and one TB has already been placed in a cache. The owner thanked me for the e-mail and said that he had forgotten he had the bug. Yeah! Two more to go.
  10. I've got several bugs that have been held since April. I've never contacted a cacher that has been holding on to a bug. Is there a standard e-mail that you send? I don't want to step on toes, but I'd like my bugs to move.
  11. I actually like that rating system! I wear crocs most of the time. I haven't gotten around to keeping an old pair of sneakers in the car for caching. I had to toss out a knock-off brand of crocs one day because I got a thorn stuck in them while caching near a cemetery.
  12. I got my Vista HCx as a Christmas present to myself. I love it! With City Navigator it does the turn-by-turn directions for me. It has come in very handy on many trips out of town as well as right in my own hometown. I use it when our Cub Scout pack goes on hikes. A few months ago it kept us from making a wrong turn away from camp as the sun was quickly setting. I like that it looks like a typical cell phone while we're out caching. I think you'll be very happy with the Vista HCx!
  13. http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=1471526 The current holder of the bug posted that he would mail the TB. Isn't that against the rules? What should I do?
  14. I dropped it onto a sandy driveway. All seemed well until I noticed that my maps were gone. I popped the sd card out and put it back, but still nothing but the base map. I went to FIND and only had 4 icons. No POI, Food, Gas, etc. I popped the batteries out and popped the sd card again. When I powered back up everything was back to normal. It kind of freaked me out. Is it normal to have things disappear?
  15. We mainly use the trails for Cub Scout hikes. Earlier this year (before we joined) the Den went out on a hike and were lost for 3 hours. I made sure to bring the GPSr when I went on our first hike (just in case). I marked camp as a waypoint. The leaders led and followed the marked trails. After a long 3.5 mile hike it was getting dark. At one point the leaders were contemplating a wrong turn. They asked me to see if we'd be heading in the right direction. Even though I couldn't see a marked trail I knew for certain that the turn would be heading in the opposite direction of camp. This past weekend we were on a hike and they again asked for help from the GPS. They had a map of the trails and it matched up with what the GPSr was saying would be the direction towards camp. Without the map I couldn't have been completely certain since the trails were very winding with some loops overlapping. I just wanted to make sure that I could get us out of a jam if I needed to. Guess I need to carry a trail map from the park to make absolutely certain.
  16. The owner confirmed that it was the cache. We hid it in the location that we thought it should have been. He will replace the log and said to consider it found. I previously logged a DNF. Do I now go add a found message or change my original DNF?
  17. I've got CityNavigator and Topo 2008 loaded onto my Garmin Vista HCx. I really thought that I'd be able to see the various trails in some of our nearby parks. All I'm seeing is a line running through the area that shows the elevation and some of the regular streets. I set the Map Detail to Highest before sending to the GPS. Am I missing something?
  18. DD's first bug got picked up within 24 hours of releasing it. The cacher took it from FL to TN and dropped it in a very active cache. Before dropping it he took 4 photos of the bug in action. Totally awesome!! DD is thrilled. She just had to rub it in that hers has traveled over 500 miles while mine is still sitting in the woods after being dropped over a month ago. DS' bug was recently picked up after being released a week ago. Not sure where he's headed to. http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=1471526
  19. We hunted the cache on Easter and didn't find it after two hunts in one day. Today we went back and still couldn't find it. Called a friend for a hint and while I'm on the phone one of the kids find an empty black canister on the ground. It's not a typical round style, but more of an oval shape. Think it might be from a Kodak Advantix. We found the canister near a tree that we think the cache was supposed to be in. Found the lid a few feet away. Do I log another DNF and explain what we found? Do I file a Need Maintenance note? Do I e-mail the owner privately and let him know what I found?
  20. Only a handful of times has it shown the cache as found. Is there a way to manually mark it as found?
  21. A friend cached with us yesterday for fun. She's interested in doing it more regularly. I told her that she could create a team name here. So if we're off caching for a day and she finds the cache first it seems kind of silly for me to claim it as also found since I didn't really find it. Then again, it leaves one less cache for me to find in our area. I guess it all depends on how you define the word FIND. I haven't paid attention to many of the threads discussing this before since I've only cached with my kids.
  22. The bug got logged tonight. He's now on his way to Tennessee for a camping trip along a river.
  23. Here's our third bug. He'll get released tomorrow.
