  1. Need software, card reader and memory card.
  2. Sorry 2stick, I could have sworn I left you a private message... it shows it as being "sent" under my messages. to any extent, the etrex is still up for sale at $55
  3. i totally agree with 4x4. ive been through my share of garmin gps's and still cant believe how much better lowrance units are. as he also said, the antennas on the ifinders are incredible. it has never dropped my position for the 2 years ive had it (and i live where the trees are seriously thick). if waypoint transfer is a problem, have you considered the regular ifinder? with that one you can transfer waypoints and even upload maps. $119 too. youll have to decide what you need, but lowrance is definitely the way to go in my opinion
  4. No. These days, the approvers actually check the maps before they allow caches to be placed (so no caches in wilderness areas). However, there are still a few remaining caches from the early days of geocaching still out there in these areas. Whether or not they are still there really depends on the forest service in your area. Some FS rangers are pretty anal about caches in wilderness areas, others are pretty lax. Where I'm from, they put the smack down! There used to be about 4 caches in nearby desolation wilderness, and over the course of a year, they all disappeared. Noone really knows who takes them, some suspect FS rangers, and others think its the tree huggers. Kinda hard to catch them if you think about it though... But to answer your question, no physical caches are not allowed in wilderness areas anymore. You can try a virtual cache though, those are allowed.
  5. Explorer sale is pending on one person right now. etrex not sold. Since this is taking longer than expected, I might as well just give a price. $55 for the etrex. This does not include shipping.
  6. Im going to say iFinder H20, or if you can live with the lack of true waterproofing, iFinder Pro. as far as Im concerned, lowrance blows garmin and magellan out of the water in terms of how well engineered their GPS's really are. Best antennas around, super fast satellite locks, excellent mapping, generally cheaper, awesome interface... and on and on....
  7. Two great GPS receivers for sale here. Bought a eTrex yellow as an impulsive buy a couple of weeks ago and realize how much I dont need it. Brand new condition. Only the GPS itself and the Garmin neoprene carrying case. Also an old classic Eagle Explorer 12-channel GPS for sale. Got this sucker a long time ago and never use it. In very good condition, no wear. Lithium battery still good. Selling GPS + owners manual + cigarette adapter. Name your price and Ill ship these bad boys out the next day. Shipping is insured and sent UPS or Fedex.
  8. I updated to the new 1.8.0 firmware. I noticed on the satellite page that the fixes (both 2D and 3D) have a "+" after them sometimes. In other words it will say "3D Fix+" or "2D Fix+". Sometimes it doesnt have the "+" though. Any ideas what the + means?
  9. I dont know... Ive done more damage to the screen of a GPS by trying to REMOVE scratches. Tried the ol' toothpaste method and the car polish method, nada. I think its pretty funny the extent some of you guys above go to just to remove a scratch. If the scratch isnt that deep, just learn to live with it.
  10. You and I seem to be alone in the war to support Lowrance here. Some people will just never know what theyre missing...
  11. well I thought it was bunk at first, but it does have "Magellan" printed on the side. Im guessing its some sort of satellite locator/information tool. The numbers go up to 33 which is how many satellites are reserved for GPS (minus WAAS). As for how it works, not sure... maybe it has a built in antenna and changes the rollers to different colors based on signal strength? ... OR it could just be a load of crap selling for $5
  12. You think you got it rough? Try being a Lowrance iFinder advocate! i know what you mean and seriously... mdagent, not to be "mean" or anything, but grow a backbone. who honestly cares if other people make fun of you (didnt we learn that in second grade?)
  13. lowrance rules you wont be disappointed with whatever model you get.
  14. Maybe thats the problem. We arent talking about disposable batteries here. Alpha and I are talking about rechargeable NIMH batteries. Although in a pinch, yes, disposables are used. Now THAT is convenience! You still havent told me why you think internal lithium rechargeables are SOOO much more convenient... waiting for a good explaination here.
  15. The battery life would suffer big time from that idea though. 1 second is plenty quick. As a matter of fact, I use 2 second update on my ifinder.
  16. Not those devices, but lithium proprietaries in general... like a mobile phone or computer. Obviously AA or AAA batteries wouldnt be a good idea in those, but for these things, proprietary is fine. Cell phones are used either socially, or for emergency. For the normal everyday cell phone use, there will be plenty of opportunity to charge the phone, so not a problem there. For an emergency application, you will charge the phone, turn it off and only use it when you really need it. Therefore not a problem. GPS Is different... you may need to keep it on for hours or even days at a time, and its operation will be important at all times. Seriously though, what drives you to bend over to the GPS companies and buy these units?
  17. A GPS he can grow into? How about a Lowrance iFinder? or iFinder h20? Inexpensive, well-built GPS with SD card mapping, and WAAS. You should look into it atleast.
  18. How is it a convenience?!?! Think about what you are saying! Its a convenience because its about 7 seconds quicker to recharge the batteries?? Give me a break. Its a convenience because its lighter?! No its not! Like Alpha wolf said, the 201 is heavier than the 101. And even with other GPSrs with rechargeables, the weight difference is next to nothing. Is it really that convenient to have to run out of battery life in the woods and be totally screwed about navigation?! Is it really convenient to have to ship your GPS back to have Garmin replace the stupid battery for you?! That doesnt sound too convenient to me. Is it really convenient to be on a 14 hour "leash" with your GPS battery life? I realize I sound pissed here, but it really ticks me off that laziness is the reason that most GPSs in the future will go internal rechargeable and that I will have to pay the price for it.
  19. Found it on the German ebay site. There is a company called "Alan" and they make GPS recievers. I had no idea until I saw it today...
