  1. I am the owner of the "Smack the Ground" cache referenced by Warm Fuzzies. It's at D/FW Airport. If you are up for a good walk, I'm guessing at least 3 miles RT, you could take the free shuttle to the South Shuttle Parking and walk from there. In general, though, walking completely out of the vicinity of the airport to get to places where caches could reasonably be placed would require MILES of walking that someone on a layover might not have time to complete. Not to mention the complication of carryon luggage. It would be hard to place worthwhile caches that could be found as you describe arount this particular airport. If you ever head through here, give me some advance warning and I'll check the distance on my virtual for you! T-storm http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching

  3. Seth!, Sure, I can and DO skip reading the hints. Standard practice for me. I thought you were approaching this from the perspective of how to CREATE an appropriate cache listing, not how to HUNT from a cache listing. If cache hiders want to give huge hints, that's their business. My impression from reading your initial post was that you believed there was a particular way that a cache hider should write hints. For example: quote:My rule of thumb (and I hope that this will be yours) is that the hint should lead the person right to the geocache if he or she is within 50-100 feet. I am offering a dissenting opinion. I don't think the hint should lead the person to the cache. I think hiders should feel free to offer as much or as little help as they desire. I do agree that hints can be unworthy of decrypting... "look under the rock" in a large rockfield is not helpful. If that's all the help they desired to offer, the hider should have just passed on hints altogether. T-storm http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching
  4. I think maybe Brokenwing, not being the Texas native out of the household, didn't get the nuance just right in his statement about how Texans perceive themselves. I think many of us DO think of ourselves as southerners, but the thing is we tend to think of ourselves as Texans first! I think you might encounter different attitudes in west Texas, where folks might be more likely to identify themselves with the plains in the north and with the southwest as you get farther south. Of course, I could just feel this way because prior to generations of Texans, my ancestors were generations of southerners! That opinion babbled about, I'd rather have Texas grouped with some surrounding states, like Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico. It would suit my needs better. But I don't know what the residents of those states would think of it! http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching
  5. For the original poster, you do know that if you go to the Hide/Seek a Cache page that you can alter the search radius, right? You're asking for something similar off the main page where a zip can be entered upper right, then? I would like the following search options: 1) Ability to toggle whether or not caches I've previously found or placed show up in my search results. 2) An ignore function much like the watch function, so I can keep caches like those hidden under my caching partner's account or those I've decided I'm just not interested in out of the search results. Having a link to an "ignore list" page off of the MyCache page would allow me to find and reset cache listings that I might have ignored for reasons such as long-term unavailability. 3) Ability to search for caches by a particular user without having to first find something they've hidden or logged to click the request to see their profile. This could also be handled on the MyCache page with an option to "view user's profile" with a text entry field in which to supply the desired user name. Somewhat like the "e-mail this user" link that is on the MyCache page. My $0.02 T-storm http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching

  7. Well, I'm repeating myself (from a previous thread), but I do not feel that every cacher must be guaranteed a find on every cache they can physically approach. I do not think that hints are required. When they ARE offered I do not think they must take one by the hand and lead one to the cache. They are called HINTS not solutions! I know it can be frustrating to fail or to have to try more than once. I've done it. But I don't think that's a problem if it happens once in a while. There are caches I can't physically get to, why shouldn't there be caches I can't get my mind around? T-storm http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching
  8. Jeremy-- Are you working on this tonight? I ask because I just got a watch list notification that encrypted the entire text of the log. If I go to the actual cache listing, the text appears unencrypted. The cache is: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=16822 And the log in question is the one by Mopar. Hope you get it figured out! Thanks, T-storm http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching
  9. Oh, Jeremy, how you will hate me... it's buggy and I possibly may not like the way it works. I just tested this with a cache I own. It's one you transferred to me after the owner went AWOL. I had found it previous to that date. I tried to edit Brokenwing's log from that find. It provides me a completely blank (except for date field with TODAY'S date) log! Nothing to edit unless I cut and paste! I didn't try the edit because I didn't want to mess up a found log with pics attached. Then I tried to edit my own note log on the same cache. For my logs, the text DOES show up and I can change it. However, the log I chose to work with had a 12/10/2001 date. I remembered to change it on the edit page, but I failed to get the year right and it was saved with a 12/10/2002 date. I editted again to try to fix it. Every time I try to use a 2001 date, it fails, telling me that I entered an invalid future date!! I picked a different note I previously posted on the same cache. It will not let me set a 2001 date. Sorry for the bad news, but THANKS for the effort to give us editable logs!! T-storm http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching
  10. The event is on! Please see the cache listing at: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=16822 and (if planning to attend) vote in the associated poll(s) in the South & Southeast forum. Remember that we hope to draw folks from out of the area to this event! The main caching event will be held on Saturday, April 20 and will include a potluck picnic, cache games, hunts for new caches, and other fun and socializing. Other likely events on Friday through Sunday include local caching, a nice dinner one night, a "pictionary party" (which is actually playing a number of games such as Balderdash, Scattergories, Taboo, Cranium, and the like while sharing snacks and drinks), and a trip to Scarborough Faire, the local renaissance festival. Hope to see some of you there! T-storm http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching
  11. I realize that Texas has been moved into the South and Southeast forum, but for others who won't figure that out for a while (like myself), I wanted to post a notice here. 12. Eoghan-- Try searching on Cluedo and you'll see 6 caches in England that gives clues needed to locate the 7th cache and solve the mystery. Is that what you had in mind? T-storm http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching
  13. We never decode hints unless we are badly stuck and also feel that the cache might be missing. If we're struggling but don't have any reason to feel the cache is missing, we likely still won't decrypt. Not sure why, maybe because we don't want as big a hint as some encrypted hints offer? 14. We talked about this either yesterday evening or this morning, I think. My favorite type of caches would likely be something like a 4-5 on difficulty and 3 or so on terrain. I like sneaky hiding spots, puzzles, multis, themed searches, etc. I also enjoy less developed terrain than the standard city park, a somewhat extended hike, maybe even a bit of challenging terrain. However, I'm an out-of-shape fat chick who generally has a 2.5 y.o. child along, so what challenges me physically will be somewhat less than some nice fit person would enjoy. 15. Stjeanp-- A couple of questions... how big is the bug and what (if any) are its goals? I could offer better suggestions with that info! T-storm http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching

  17. Had one plundered probably by kids. It was a kids' cache which was happened upon accidentally by a family. One kid told 2 friends, who told 2 friends... and within a week another local cacher found the contents scattered around a 60 foot radius and the empty ammo can cache container lying there with the lid ripped off. It was replaced in a different part of the same park. T-storm http://www.cordianet.com/geocaching
