  1. "You see, my theory is that hunting goes hand in hand with heavy drinking."

Are all your theories this general? I hunt geocaches as well as quail, and heavy drinking is not included in either sport.

Let's see. I am armed with a GPS and they are armed with a weapon intended to kill a large animal.

    I say it's no contest.

On a similar note. Today I went to do some cache maintenance on one of my caches and when I was done and about to get back on the trail, I saw a pair of hunters coming up the trail. If I had known they were down there, I wouldn't have done the maintenance today.

A human can be, and has been, mistaken for a deer or even elk. When it comes right down to it, the hunter would be wrong to shoot you but it won't matter if he is a good shot and you are dead.

  2. Last year, a caching buddy and I came upon a smoldering "camp fire" in the Trinity River bottoms. A big roll of wire was smoldering in the coals, having the insulation burned off. The hair on our necks pretty much stood on end as we looked around us in the woods to try to determine whether we were being watched. Being good Texans, both of us were armed, but.... you don't wanna have to prove it. I marked the spot on my GPSr and went to the local cop shop and showed it to a detective on Google Earth. They checked it out but to my knowledge never caught the wire thieves.

I stopped for a cache this morning in a park with a mostly-wooded hill, and found a backpack lying in the woods maybe 20' from the cache. At first I thought that it was a homeless person camping out (that's been happening more and more lately), but the backpack was new and nice. Then I thought maybe another geocacher or someone had set it down, so I walked around and looked for evidence of someone else nearby. Nobody. So I unzipped the main compartment and saw the laptop and some books and other electronics and stuff. I pulled out a piece of paper and left a note, saying essentially that if someone had left something valuable, call me and describe it, with my first name and cell number, and pinned it to a piece of buckthorn via the thorns. Then I picked up the backpack and took it with me, expecting to find some sort of identifying info and call the owner. I realized on the way home that I should have left it and called the police... DUH!

Anyway, it wasn't just (potentially) a stolen backpack (still undetermined). There were four vehicle GPS units inside, and the two that I looked at each had different addresses set to Home. As the Deputy that came to retrieve the bag and get the report said, the owner (apparently a college student, according to the papers inside the bag) is either a victim or a suspect. Aside from the obvious dumb move of removing it from the scene and touching everything, an interesting and unexpected experience!

So has anyone else ever run across a cime scene, evidence of a crime, a crime in progress, stolen property, etc? What are your best stories?

  3. Can someone, in simple language (steps) explain how to set a background picture on a cache page? I can see the spot to do it on the "create a cache" page, but have been unsucessful doing this. I know what an url is but thought I could just upload an image and have it show up as the background. Not so. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Scottbob139 Fort Worth, Texas

  4. Ok, a lot of the MRJIFFY Summer Meltdown Coins have been sitting in caches for the last several weeks, please take a look and see if one is nearby to you and help get them moving. There is only another 6 weeks left in the cointest and time is running out to participate! Remember the grand prize is a 100 geocoin prize collection, full of LE coins and some HTF coins as well!

    Good luck to everyone.

    Best Regards,

    MRJIFFY

I found #12 today. Does a picture of it side by side with a picture of me count? or do I need to be holding it? Sorry, don't have time to read all the threads at this point to see if someone's already asked that. Also, haven't participated in one of these forums before. Maybe I'll find out when I try to post how to upload a pic? If not it has been uploaded to #12's tracking page.

  6. Going to St. John's area in July and would appreciate any info on caching there. Is there a search by google maps Canada version? Found plenty of coordinates for caches in Newfoundland/Labrador, but no maps to narrow them down to area I am traveling. I'm new at this so it could be a big duh answer . I don't mind.
