  1. Just keep having fun, enjoy the scenery and as some veteran cachers said to me "think where you would hide it." That sometimes works. So does getting into all sorts of contorted positions. Sometimes, stepping back and looking for what Popoki Nui calls the cachers' trail can lead you right to the cache, as can spotting a pile of twigs/branches, leaves, etc. I still like the 1/1 or 2/2 caches - that way I do not get too discouraged! Keep enjoying yourself and remember - I need help with operating a GPSr so we all have our trials, you at least are getting to GZ! Good Luck!
  2. There is actually a Garmin Nuvi that was due to be hitting the stores in the third quarter of 2008. It is waterproof, good for marine and auto, and.......geocaching! (according to the literature.) Have a look at Garmin's website, it is a bit more pricey than the 200 series, but maybe you can trade up? I loved my auto GPS - made a recent drive a lot less stress! The new one also has batteries that are user replaceable, I believe. Good Luck!
  3. If you keep at it...........you will find them! Have faith in yourself. I don't have many finds under my belt, some days I can be on a roll, others I am dragged out of the woods 'cos I am using language that aint Groundspeak - more gutterspeak! As has already been said...link up with someone who is willing to give you some hints on the "how to" side of things, the logs and descriptions can be a real help too. Watch out for what we call a "cachers' trail" - the odd bootprint, flattened grass or churned soil. Follow your gut feel too and in the words of fellow cachers cache crop think where you would hide something, that might be the spot. Don't set your targets too high.. I still enjoy the 1/1, but really enjoy getting out there and seeing sights I didn't know existed so close to home. If the cache is found - bonus! Happy Caching!

  5. I got my weekly LoBot mailer today...and haven't done anything to my computer. It is only Tuesday, so I am sure it is a case of "better late than never," rather than being ahead of everyone else!! I have found that IE, although a lot slower, keeps me logged in...Firefox must need adjusting, so give me a few years and I'll let you know how it is going. Thanks again folks and happy caching!
  6. The ISP that we have hasn't blocked the weekly mailer to my other half.....it comes through on the desktop and other laptop. I am confused. When this happened before it was a "certifying e-mail" issue, so e-mail is no longer certified. I am a computer rookie, so is it cookies that are logging me out after I have logged in??? Or the presence of cookies? I appreciate your time and suggestions..........thanks!

    Useless Hints

My least favourite has to be "in a hole by a fallen tree." Many holes, many fallen trees, lousy GPSr reception and I was taken out off the forest as my language embarrassed the trees!!! We returned another day and it was in a hole UNDER a fallen tree. It was a big cache and sadly, pretty empty. But, it is a great caching area and we have found a neat restaurant by the lake that serves great food.
  8. I log in to the home page, go to my next page selection and I have been logged out. Anyone know why? And my weekly mailer has been AWOL for 2 weeks now. This has happened before, and not just to me. It is a bit frustrating to say the least. Anyone else out there having similar issues?
  9. I haven't had my weekly Groundspeak LoBot Mailer................................for the second week!!! Has this happened to you?
  10. Mainly in for the hunt, but as already said by others, will trade for travel bugs and geocoins - hate mine sitting sitting doing nothing - and if a cache is looking empty, will drop a few items to fill it a bit. Favourites for that are polished pebbles and small toys/animals that we get at a telescope and science store. We have also found Native Aboriginal Coins that are stamped with a variety of designs with different words on the reverse. Usually select the words that pertain to geocaching.....patience, perseverance, wisdom to name a few.
  11. Well, I didn't know how lucky I was! Just purchased a Garmin nuvi 255w and was thinking I got a deal ($100 cheaper than advertised on Future Shop's website at time of purchase) and now I find I can do this too? Wow! I was wondering if I should have gone for the waterproof/boating/geocaching one they do....but couldn't justify spending more money on myself. Hopefully I will be able to set mine up for caching too....thanks for the info and watch for "please help" questions from this end!!
  12. It is happening again! No LoBot weekly mailer, owner notifications coming through with header but no text, same with watchlist for one of the Popokis. For the other Popoki, all seems fine...we did the tools/AVG thing last time which fixed the problem on all computers. It is only since the new "front page" has appeared on geocaching.com that this problem has resurfaced. But why on one computer, oh why, why, why?
  13. I'm just glad it's happening in the land of my birth as well as here. I waited up until 0100hrs Saturday morning for my LoBot weekly newsletter. It is usually in my mailbox on a Friday evening. It snuck in about an hour after I went to bed, saving me from contacting AVG. Going back to see what it says now........it does have words I can read this time.
  14. Now may I ask................where is the entire Groundspeak LoBot weekly newsletter??? Received no header, nothing! Anyone else out there having withdrawal symptoms? Please excuse me while I go outside to say rude words about this. I thought all was fine..obviously not.
  15. "A special life brings precious memories.....and memories live forever." Heartfelt sympathies Pat
  16. It's happening in Canada too! Receiving headers, but then message area blank. If message did come through, gobbledy gook appeared at the bottom. Tried sending myself "test"...no good. Followed advice and now have unchecked "certify" email. Test message then came through. Never had any problems with anything else, just mail from Geocaching.com and Groundspeak. So, is it AVG or.............what? And the worst thing is not receiving the LoBot weekly newsletter with the new caches! We've even had, in the same house, same IP, same room, one of us receiving the newsletter and one not. Curiouser and curiouser!!! Anyways, now it is Friday, and so far I have received a big fat nothing as far as the weekly newsletter! Rats!
  17. Test messages came thru fine now that I'm no longer certifiable, or having email certified! Thanks for the help everyone, and to Popoki Nui for helping me at the keyboard!
  18. Thanks..waiting for a test message now! Glad we were not alone in this
