  1. Two, Batteries life is very bad when using turn by turn navigation one set of AA's will only last about one hour. This could equal about 12 euros in batteries in a day of use or $15.00 a day.

It would be good to use car mount + 12V power while you're driving.

Also maybe the unit is "slower" when running on batteries ( some power saving mode like on laptops )?

  2. Try turning your backlight timer off, then you will see how fast your batteries go...

    Why should I do that??

The purpose of going out is to enyoj nature, not looking at gps screen all the time, and when I need to orientate or something like that, then I look at gps and for that 30sec backlight is more then enough.

Don't see the purpose of "backlight on" on gps in the backpack.

  3. Guys,

don't know which batteries you used ... but my 710 with new 2500 mAh Eneloops works 8hrs+

    Settings:

    Brightness - Max

    Backlight Timer - 30sec

    Active Suspend Timer - Never

    Electronic compass - On

    Barometer - On

    Power up - 10:00 hrs

    Shutdown - 18:00 hrs

Since I guide a group up/down hill I was using GPS quite frequently plus some researching on the field.

    So,

it's seems it's time to buy new batteries...

  4. Hoping that European customers will see something this time.

    I hope too,

good sign is that first presentation of the new units takes place in Europe ( Friedrichshafen Outdoor Show ).

    As for topo maps,

"old" *.imi maps ( from eXplorists and Tritons ) are compatible with new eXplorists.

    However,

new feature like shading requires new maps ...

Raster *.rmp format remain the same.

  5. today Magellan revealed new generation of handheld GPS units - the eXplorists 510/610/710

More info at Magellan site - http://www.magellangps.com/products/produc...amp;prodID=2377

    Highligths:

    - 3.0" touch screen

    - two hard buttons

    - road navigation with voice guidance

    - 3D map view

    - hybrid maps view

    - waypoint projection

    - file system

    - paperless GC

    - microSD slot

    - mini USB

    - 2xAA

    - IPX 7

    ... and lots more :)

  6. Congrat on the new toy, I hope they'll serve you well.

    As for Triton's,

The Triton looked interesting ... I was a little turned off by a CE machine.

Actually thanks to CE OS you can use buch of CE softwares like Office, utils, games ...

For navigation there is OziCE for Triton's 1500/2000 for raster images or even road nav with voice guidances ( ViaGPS ) ...

Or Romania for that matter as I am planning a trip there this summer.

For Romania there are three sources of maps for Magellan's :

    1. topo2009EE - 3D topographic map

maybe topo2009EE covers Elbonia or part of it :)

    2. ViaGPS Europe Premium - road nav, full detail EE

    3. maps4me - topographic map

  7.

Already off to a horrible start, if this doesn't turn out to be vaporware. NO ONE likes VantagePoint. Use the protocol the Explorist and Meridians had.

    I don't see why such a negative reaction ?!

Btw, what horrible start ? Your heard/saw somewhere Magellan announcement ??? For now all of this is a hear-say ...

As for VP, it's not perfect but working, and it's far better then BaseCamp in any way ...

At least we could wait for first units before any reactions, or not ?

  8. Do you still have to boot on a different OS and then reboot when you want to use the magellan software, or have these guys found a way around it. If they haven't It is a royal Pain to use.

    Yes and no.

Yes if you are using just ViaGPS, and no if you are using ViaGPS within Triton TotalMOD ( personally using ViaGPS in combination with TotalMOD which gives me additional option to use OziCE and bunch of other programs ).

That 30 seconds for rebooting are more then compensated with full road navigation with all options as on any Autmotive unit.

After all, you need more time to park a car and continue on foot or vice versa

  9. I would like the "one" unit that does it all, but I know that unit doesn't exist yet. So, I'm looking for a unit that is great for street navigation, excellent for hiking, suitable for use on water, and geocaching. The preferences I have are as follows: of course the basics of all units, color display, largest screen possible, expanable SD slot, paperless data transfer (learned from reading here), and ability to load third party maps.

I will probably be in minority, but only Magellan Triton 1500/2000 meets you requirements :D

Street navigation - only T1500/2000 support voice guidance and for example, with iGO8 Triton 1500/2000 works like real automotive units ... All other units can just beep ...

Hiking - just like all other brands

Tritons are really waterproof, and have SD slot, touch-screen ...

With third party software you can input your own raster maps in it, and of course there are NG topo maps available...

See at - Triton forum - for more
