  1. Hans,

Thanks for your reply. I remembered Img2gps earlier and installed it. I was able to upload two .img files and thought that this was the answer. I discovered subsequently, however, that I must not have had the USB Mass Storage connected when I did that, because when I came to load three files with the USB Mass Storage connected, I got an error message similar to what I was being given by SendMap. Once I came out of USB Mass Storage and tried to upload the three maps, it worked. This is fine until I exceed the internal memory. So I should ideally like to be able to upload in a similar manner to the USB Mass Storage.

... I have just this minute tried 'Create File instead of Upload' in Img2gps. It does indeed create a gmapsupp.img file, which I am able to copy to the microSD card. So far as I can see it is producing the complete result.

    Thankyou.

  2. I have brought together several vector map elements within a particular grid square into GPSMapEdit. saved a .mp file, exported the file to .img through cGPSmapper, renamed the resulting file gmapsupp.img, copied it into the microSD card with the USB Mass Storage on my Garmin connected, and successfully viewed the result.

I have created a second grid square of mapping similarly, and believed that SendMap would take the two .img files and upload them as a mapset into that same microSD card.

When I use SendMap, it cannot connect to my GPS device and provides an error message referring to latest USB drivers. My Garmin USB drivers came as part of MapSource Trip and Waypoint Manager version 4.00 that accompanied my Legend HCx, which is itself, of course, a new model in the Garmin range. So I cannot imagine that the drivers are not up to date. They are located where automatically placed, in C:\Garmin\USB_Drivers.

I have read that SendMap does not like character spaces in paths, so I have placed SendMap. exe and associated files in C:\SendMap\sendmap20 and ensured that there are no character spaces in the path to my two .img files, yet I get the same error message.

I should be grateful for any advice that would permit me to build a series of mapping files into my microSD card, whether by SendMap or other methods. MapSource Trip and Waypoint Manager will not accept .img files.

  3. Excuse me butting in, but this appears to be such a good place to post that I would like to take the opportunity to raise an issue that I haven't been able to find the answer to elsewhere, so far:

I have a Garmin Legend HCx with a 2 GB microSD card. Its software version is 2.30.

I have succesfully loaded several .csv files to my Garmin using POI Loader, version 2.4.2, but POI Loader's behaviour seems erratic, sometimes executing the transfer successfully, sometimes not. So, for example I can usually load a list in the low thousands, comprising lines like this: -1.14153,60.1534,"ZE1 0AA" with the file name ZE.csv, say, but as I try with successively larger lists, a point is reached, usually at around seven or eight thousand, when the operation fails, and POI Loader simply closes down instead of issuing the usual congratulatory message. Then, sometimes, I find I cannot load a file that I was able to previously load. Yet, just once, I was able to load a file of 20,000 records. My typical location is L:\x_personal\GPS\CSV\Places of Interest, with a single .csv file therein.

I believed that the limit on the number of POIs able to be copied on Garmin 'x' receivers was only dictated by the size of the microSD card, which, in this case, should not be an issue.

I have tried transfers with USB Mass Storage connected and not connected, but there seems to be no difference.

I am confused and would appreciate some insight and assistance.

    I thank you in anticipation.

  4. Thanks for your replies, Mach2003 and Chuy.

A postcode is a United Kingdom ZIP.

Since posting my original quey, I have tried various things:

I have been able to transfer in excess of 10,000 postcodes, but POI Loader's behaviour seems erratic, sometimes executing the transfer successfully, sometimes not, and sometimes I am advised that there is a problem with a particular row when I know there is not.

Also, concerning my question about the status of my GPSr when using POI Loader, it informs me that it cannot perform the operation when I have the USB Mass Storage connected, yet when I switch out of that mode then perform the operation again, it seems that twice as many items in the list have been transferred.

    I remain somewhat confused.

  5. I have a Garmin Legend HCx with a 2 GB microSD card.

I have succesfully copied several .csv files to my Garmin using POI Loader.

I have copied one thousand postcodes, for example, but if I try 10,000 the operation fails.

I believed that the limit on the number of POIs able to be copied in this manner was only dictated by the size of the microSD card, which, in this case should not be an issue.

Does POI LOader impose its own limit, or might there be another reason the operation fails?

Should I simply connect to the Legend, or should I have USB Mass Storage connected?

A reply that I received from Garmin states. "POI information is stored on the internal memory of the GPS, not on the memory card, and so the number of POIs that can be loaded to this unit

is limited. The microSD card is used for storing mapping information

and for holding a backup of any track data that the unit records.".

    I thank you in anticipation.

  6. Perhaps I missed it on the Geocaching website, but I wish to know if there is a method for sending information to my Garmin GPSr from a collection of nearest caches - obtained by entering a zip or postcode, say - rather than having to send one set of details at a time.

I have seen that I can choose to send information from one, some, or all selected caches obtained in a similar manner in the geocaching section of Garmin's website. However, it appears that the list of nearest caches found there is not as comprehensive or up to date, perhaps.

I have successfully transferred data from single Cache Detail pages into the Geocache 'folder' on my Legend HCx.

    I thank you in anticipation.
