  1. CityNav on a card limits you to just that map. You can use it in any Garmin that will take the card, but can't add to it. If willowbean is in the us she can get lots of free detailed topo maps from GPSfileDepot. These won't generally be routable, so if she needs turn by turn directions she'll also want a copy of CityNav. However, if she wants topos and CityNav on her 60csx at the same time she should probably get it on DVD so she can load it on her computer and send a mix of map products to her 60CSX. A 60CSx will accept up to a 4GB microSD card, which will hold 4 times as much as what City Nav takes. Downside of CityNav on DVD is that you can only use it on one GPSr.
  2. I tried yours without success. Looking at some of my old CSV files all of them list Lat, Lon, Name with no column header and are WGS 84. GPSBabel translates these CSVs fine.
  3. DIY: Excellent tutorials using cgpsmapper here: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/tutorials/how-to-create-garmin-topo-maps/ (US data) http://home.roadrunner.com/~creek/garmin.htm (also US Data) Also, mkgmap is a compiler for OpenStreetMap data (wading through the wiki is a chore) and www.garmin.openstreetmap.nl is a source for free routable maps of the whole world. A place to start for OSM data is http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/mtb_map
  4. Who did you get the serial -> USB cable from, and have you checked their website (or accompanying disk) for drivers, installers, etc? Also, note that some drivers for WinXP and earlier won't work with Win7, if that's what you have. Note from Garmins serial -> USB cable page: So if you've got Win7-64, as many do, and this product you'll need to look elsewhere.
  5. What country? GPSfiledepot has free 24k topo for all of the US. Talkytoaster has it for the UK. Opencyclemap and OpenFietsmap have it for most or all of Europe. Openstreetmap and GPSfiledepot also have tutorials if you want to brew your own maps, but the data described by GPSfiledepot are pretty much limited to the US.
  6. They're replacing yours aren't they? And who needs $200 worth of maps? Aside from City Navigator ($70) there's plenty of high quality free maps available.
  7. And the OR works OK with the restricted viewing angle on handlebars? I always need to turn it so the sun angle is correct. But then again, mine's always handheld. I'd suggest a GPSr that ISN'T a touch screen for bike riding. Touch screens' visibility (at least the first generation Garmins) isn't as good as their GPSMap60CSX, GPSMap62s, or Etrexs.
  8. Anybody asked Garmin about this? The latch is pretty close to the gasket and some petroleum based solvents can deteriorate some rubbers. Don't know if this applies here, but it would be nice to have an official response.
  9. It's rumored that Garmin USB cables are wired slightly differently from standard USB. Best to connect a Garmin using a USB cable from Garmin.
  10. How long should what take? Download is a function of your connect speed, on a fast connection a minute or two. After you disconnect from your machine and re-start figure another couple (max 5) minutes for the Etrex to load its software (white screen with a loading message followed by a blue line progressing across the bottom of the screen). My version of 2.6 hung the first time I re-started, but loaded fine the second try.
  11. ChefRD2000's side by side test had to be side by side in order to fit on screen, but that means there could have been some sort of proximity RF interference between them. Anybody with expertise to say whether that's possible or not? Also, if test was done with an Etrex 30 and a 62s, would proximity of compasses affect each other?
  12. The gmapsupp.img will ONLY be useful if it's copied to the Garmin folder on your DK. Since it will overwrite a gmapsupp.img that's already there, you may want to save that one somewhere safe. A much better way to get free maps is to select the "MapSource" (or Mac) installer version, and download a copy of BaseCamp from Garmin. That way you'll be able to add or change mapsets up to the size limit on your DK.
  13. If you downloaded a gmapsupp.img it should go in the Garmin folder as Red90 says. But if you downloaded an EXE file it's an installer and you need to run the EXE to set up your PC so that MapSource or BaseCamp can read it.
  14. Like 10 minutes or longer depending on how far you've moved from the last time you turned it on.
  15. How old are your CN and MS? I've got versions as old as 2009 running on MS 6.13.7, MS 6.16.3, and BC 3.3.1. But the only version that shows on MS 6.13.7 is the 2009 version. MS 6.16.3 and BC both show the 2009 version, a 2010 version, and a 2012 version.
  16. Forest Service road coverage in CityNavigator is pretty good for the Kaibab NF in the Arizona Strip and Dixie NF in Utah. Problem is that in MapSource, detail set to highest, you can't see the roads above 1 mile zoom. Better in BaseCamp. there you can see the roads up to 5 mile zoom. Garmin used to have a link where you could view your area of interest on their maps, but I couldn't find it. You can download CNNANT from Garmin for less than $100, and you can also buy a disk from Amazon for significantly less than that.
  17. Weigh 5 oz., GLONASS satellites, No antenna connection. No NMEA, Text Out, RTCM.
  18. On my 60CSX I'd fix that by specifying "Record By Distance" and setting a distance of about 5 yards. That would mostly eliminate spiderweb tracks (erroneous samples when unit wasn't moving). Garmin software on more recent models seemed to take care of this pretty well on the "Automatic" setting, but maybe the software upgrades fine tuned "Automatic" a little.
  19. garmin.openstreetmap.nl are free and routable. CityNav is more reliable in US. Lots of free US topos at GPSfileDepot. NUVI 500/550 provides spoken turn by turn directions and also caches. Specs don't mention a compass. IMO, an Etrex is too small to use for street navigation unless you have a copilot translating for you.
  20. Wasn't trying to upsell, just responding to dfx's comment about large areas with my personal paranoia.
  21. Since I had to drive from Albuquerque,NM to Baltimore,MD while planes were grounded after 9-11-2001, I never go anywhere without a full CNNANT on my GPSr.
  22. Try both in a store. Some folks like touchscreens, others don't.
  23. Realize that, but wanted to give some order of magnitude. Is that for planimetric Hungary alone? What if the OP wants topo, or more countries?
  24. Garmin doesn't even list an Etrex 10 on its Mapping Handhelds page, but it comes up in a query. It doesn't appear to support maps at all. Dakota 10 has no expandable memory. Internal memory is 850MB. Make sure you can get all the mapsets you need into it. As stated above, it won't hold all of City Navigator North America.
  25. I'd be more concerned about aggravating my carpal tunnel from the long list.
