  1. Wow, sometimes the jokes are just too easy. I'll pass on this one. Several people have remarked on being respectful in cemeteries. What would be a disrespectful cache? I don't think you're warning against a requirement to have your picture taken while dancing on someone's grave, but what would be acceptable on other caches that aren't acceptable in a cemetery?
  2. Someday they'll have a GPS like system in orbit around the moon, except they'll probably call it the LPS, or Lunar Positioning System. And you couldn't Geocache on the moon no matter what equipment is in place, you could only Lunacache.
  3. The lunatic is in the hall. The lunatics are in my hall. The paper holds their folded faces to the floor, and everyday the paper boy brings more.
  4. I can't imagine Manuel is too happy about it. He needs to look for another job.
  5. Mushtang

    Same Name

Ever done a search for cache names with the word "cache" in it? There are nearly 850 pages of them!! Cache caches. I've made it a point not to use that word in the name of any of mine.
  6. Find count numbers now determine who is winning. There will be a large bag of money given to the cacher with the most legitimate finds this year. (The bag is probably green with a large dollar sign on the side of it.)
  7. That's pretty much how every web cam cache works. The logistics are not difficult at all, so go for it. Just make sure you're able to see the persons face and easily identify them. I don't think web cam caches are being approved anymore where you can't tell who's in the frame. Most web cam cache pics that I've seen (especially the one that I've logged) are so far away from the cacher that you can't tell if it's even a real person.
  8. Yep, I made myself into a TB after reading about someone else doing it. I added pictures of me with the TB dog tag onto my TB page that I thought were pretty neat. The purpose of my personal TB is different from Hedberg's in that I'm the only one that logs myself in and out of caches. I do this to keep up with the milage I've travelled as the crow flies. Hedberg is a TB for other people to log when they see him wearing the shirt at caches and cache events. This is a very cool idea and different from any that I've heard of. I'm not sure how he'll get logged if someone spots him at the grocery store.
  9. I had a find once that was in the front outdoor area of a coffee shop. Very much a commercial cache. The shop was closed on Sundays and a gate around the cache was locked. Nowhere on the cache page did it say anything about store hours or suggested times to search. This made me very mad, especially since I could see the tupperware cache container 10 feet from me stuck in a hole in the rock wall. I logged it as a find and posted in my log what happened and also requested the owner update the page with the store hours. They, of course, did not. Months later I was in the area again and went ahead and signed the log, but I felt I was okay to log it as a find the first time if they weren't going to be up front with important information like that. When I got home I edited my find to say that I'd signed the log, just in case anyone wanted to be nit-picky.
  10. If only there had been a rule in place that would prohibit leaving a cache that you're not able to care for because it's too far from where you live.
  11. See, life is more fun if you don't take everything literally. For SixTen, you're correct, I didn't *really* win the Jeep yet. I am aware that the first drawing hasn't even been held. For everyone else, thanks for the party you threw for me after I won the Jeep. It was a lot of fun. For SixTen, there wasn't *really* a party. I am aware that the first drawing hasn't even been held.
  12. I love the new Jeep Wrangler that I won in the Jeep contest. I'm not supposed to tell anyone that I'm the winner yet, so don't tell anyone. But if not for caching I would never have been able to enter and win! Thanks geocaching!
  13. I have a Vista and love it. There are two important things you should remember when dealing with the electronic compass: 1) Turn it on. When you switch to the Navigation page on your GPSr that shows the compass you need to check the top bar and see if there's a small compass figure which indicates it is turned on. If not, you need to be moving for the compass to know which way you're facing. To turn it on simply hold the upper button on the right side in for approx 5 seconds and the screen will give you a message that Compass Is Turned On (or something similar). Now you can stand still and it'll be accurate and it will point you to the cache. Don't forget to turn it off when you're finished and no longer need it. It's a battery drain which will noticably shorten the life of your batteries if you leave it on all the time. 2) You have to calibrate the compass whenever you put in new batteries. Go to the drop down menu from the Navigation page and select the option to do this. It'll instruct you to push the click stick to start, then turn slowly in two full circles. That's it. Sometimes this is called the Garmin Shuffle. if you keep these two things in mind you'll probably discover that the Navigation page is better for you once you get within a few hundred feet. I hope this helps!
  14. Ahh, I didn't realize you needed GPSr accuracy. I'd be surprised if any online software gave you coords that were close enough to cache with. If you find any that work that well be sure to report it back here so we can all be aware of it. I've only used it to find coords of hotels when I'm planning a business trip out of town and I want to do a search for all local caches ahead of time. If the coords are 0.3 of a mile off it'll still list the correct local caches.
  15. I have a link directly to My Cache Page One to the forums main page One for the Finds Page of each of my caching friends so I can easily click to see what they've found lately. Finds - Mushtang A link to the filtered lists of geocaches closest to my house and closest to my office (which would exclude the ones I've found). That way I can quickly check for new caches for my lunch break and such. The GGA (Georgia Geocachers Association) web page. Audit logs for all my Hides (none of them are members only caches). A couple of links to cool caches that I want to try soon or want to be sure and keep handy (puzzles to solve, etc) One of the map pages that will give me coordinates for an address. And thanks to AmishHacker, I also have a link to Make-a-Flake that I go visit whenever I'm really bored.
  16. True. It might make you think you've done something useful and that might calm you down a little which would keep your heart rate lower than if you paniced. That's about the limit of how well it would work (according to the expert at the GGA meeting this month).
  17. We had a meeting earlier this month for the Georgia Geocachers Association (GGA) and had a very informative presentation on snakes from a local expert. This guy has been in the snake business for a very long time, and has a doctorate in his field. Among other useful information that we learned was that those vacuum syringes for sucking out venom don't work. He demonstrated their use and said the best thing to do if bitten by a venomous snake (how to tell is a different story) is to just go to the nearest hospital. It's really rare that you'll die from one. We also learned the difference between poison and venom, and that NO snakes are poisonous (several are venomous).
  18. Try Mapsonus. After you put in the address and get a map, there's a pulldown menu to select what happens when you click on the map. One of the choices is Show Lat/Long. I've found it to be pretty accurate.
  19. I travel a lot and I really love it when there's a virtual at, or near, and airport. Washington Reagan National has two good virtuals that I did recently since I had time before my flight. If they were just starting points for multi caches that would have required I leave the airport property (no rental car) then I wouldn't have been able to do them. But they were virtuals, they brought me to some nifty places, and I had something to do instead of sitting in the airport watching people walk by. Woo-HOO! Let's have more virtuals placed in airport properties. (I'm flying to Philly in a couple of weeks, get some hidden there) And now to digress a little.... To touch on the numbers issue, I love my find count. I love watching the number get higher. I also love comparing my count it to my brother's as well as other cachers that I've met. It's a fun part of the hobby and I, like Sparky, seriously doubt that the few people in the forums that are always complaining about find counts speak for the majority of cachers. If Jeremy reads this and is seriously considering removing the find counts, do a survey in the weekly email or something first. Find counts aren't everything, but they're something.
  20. Well.... I DID mention that I'd probably get some information wrong. I was quite clear about that before I even started telling the story. Thanks for the attack. Wouldn't it have been a little better to say something like, "Actually, Mushtang has the location wrong, it was actually here in Phoenix"? But sometimes it's more fun to do it your way. Whatever.
  21. I'll tell you the story as it was told to me over the weekend by Mtn-man at the GGA meeting. I'm probably going to leave out some details or get them wrong, but that's how it goes with second hand news. A long time ago there was a cacher in the Northeast (Washington or Oregon I think) that was very often the FTF. It sort of became a joke that when others would try to get FTF they'd arrive and see this cachers yellow jeep already parked at the cache. A lot of people were spotting his yellow jeep and commenting on it, so someone came up with the idea to make it a locationless cache. Eventually the Yellow Jeep locationless cache became so popular that it had over 1000 finds logged which caused problems with the system and had to be archived. Fortunately you can still post a find with no problems. When Jeep and Geocaching.com got together for this promotion it was decided that the jeeps all be yellow since it had already become popular among cachers. I think Mtn-man even said that Jeremy told Jeep that if he couldn't have all the TBs be yellow he wouldn't do it I'm sure there are even more details, but that's the story I heard.
  22. The first syllable of "Ammo" is the same sound as the first syllable of "Ammunition", the word that "Ammo" comes from. "Am Oh Box" is correct. "Am Oh Can" is probably better.
  23. Yes, with lots of sugar and cinnamon too. Mmm. Thanks for settling my curiosity.
  24. Jeez Carleen, stay on topic why don't you!! This isn't about some stupid baseball game. Don't be an idiot. (sorry Carleen, I didn't really mean any of that. Don't be mad, I'm just trying to get a 10% warning is all. Apparently Keystone is too nice to actually warn me for nothing. Now I've gone and given a compliment to a moderator, that can't help.)
