  1. Well, I hate to say it but that is why I went with Garmin. I bought two units back in June. Both with a $50 rebate. I mailed the info in and received the checks within 3 weeks. Looks like I am sticking with Garmin.
  2. Not to mention just about anything else (including molecular motion )
  3. Welcome and thank you for returning the cache!!! You can get a GPS receiver from stores like Best Buy, Target, etc. Shop around there are usually good deals. I personally have a Garmin Etrex Legend and love it. It is small (about the size of a typical cell phone) and has a bunch of nice features that I use outside of the geocaching game. Be sure to get a unit that has a cable so that you can download the caches waypoints directly. Good luck and welcome to the game
  4. Thanks, That narrowed it down a quite a bit.
  5. Hi All, I am planning a trip to the mountains soon and I was looking for caches where I am going camping at. The problem is I don't have the zip code or coordinates for the camp ground. Does anyone know of a web site that can provide that? I have done a search and found the camp site in the national forest servive but no further details. Thanks in advance.
  6. It sounds like you have the tracking feature turned on. When I have mine turned on, I see all these lines where I have driven. Try turning the track feature off. Good Luck.
  7. I just downloaded this tool. It is real cool. the ability to post pix with it is worth it. A suggestion is to have a field to enter the "log" that you entered when you found the cache. I do plan on using this quite often. Thanks for the cool program.
  8. Another thing is to get the EasyGPS program. This will take the LOC files that you downloaded from this site and upload them to your gps. It is very easy. I have a etrex legend and it works well. Good Luck,

Welcome to the sport. I joined back in June and it is almost an obsession for me. I don't get out as much as I would like but visit this site several times a day (if not more ). Good luck and have fun!! edit for content
  10. Well, I guess it's just a matter of preference. I have a etrex legend that does not have an e compass. I carry a cheap $5.95 compass that works just as well (keeping in mind the declination). All I have to do is take a couple of steps and it starts pointing. Have fun
  11. Easy on the drinking and posting KA. I don't know what's more dangerous: Drinking and posting or posting and drinking
  12. It looks like the same size as a 35mm film canister which measures about 5 cm (about 2 inches) tall by 3 cm wide (about 1 1/8 inches wide). I really couldn't read the measurements in your picture. A film canister works well for a micro. You just need to make sure you wash the bottle first. Good Luck
  13. By the description of the time, it sounds like a Garmin model.
  14. I have been thinking about getting MS Streets 2004 for this purpose. Does it only work with GPX files or will it also work with LOC files? Thanks,
  15. True if you are a premium member. I haven't gotten off my lazy butt and ask my wife if it is ok. Here's a good example of how it works at my house.
  16. I don't know if I would or not. It would depend on the situation. I would contact the cache owner via email in any situation if I felt something was disturbed. If nothing else, I would wait until the other people left and check on the cache. You never know, could be someone else looking for it as well.
  17. I use the "To Do" function of my palm. All I do is create a new to-do and then copy/paste the text of the cache page into a note of that to-do. It works well for me.
  18. I just got back from my son's basketball game today. The team is a pee wee team. Ages range from 6 to 8 years. We only had two practices and they pulled together and won the game. The thing that impressed me the most was the way the kids have not worked together to much and still had fun!!!! It got me thinking: This is a sport/game as well. It takes individuals to pull it together for the game to work. From the admins/mods to the cache placers, to the finders. I enjoy this game. It's a way to get out, have that sense of adventure, and the successful hunt (sometimes ). I would like to give this team a big HIGH FIVE with my thanks for the contributions!!!
  19. That was a wonderful thing for your wife to do. That in itself is a wonderful present. Way to go Happy's wife. Oh by the way, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
  20. This is fantastic!!!! Thank you for putting this together. I am looking forward to further issues!!!!! Great Job!!!
  21. RK, Do you know where the software is for the routes and tracks? Thanks,
  22. Same on my Garmin. I wonder if it's possible to make the name appear on the map, though. Do any of the units let you have names greater than 6-8 characters?? How do you see your comments on the Garmin? I have an etrex legend and I don't see the comments. As mentioned in an earlier message, I use EasyGPS and change the code to something that makes sense (I also change the icon before I upload).
  23. I create a new "to do" then add the text to a note of the "to do". I will (eventually) get the pocket queries to make things easier. Happy Hunting.
  24. WOW!! Great story Carleen. This year has been an interesting year to say the least. From finding this great hobby to losing my neice (and finding her again) and all the help that these web site and others have given. I look under our tree and see the presents that my wife and I have given our kids. I got to thinking where those gifts came from. Not from the store or mail order. They all came from love. If you really think about it, it all starts with love. The cheapest to give but priceless to receive. Though I have only met one other team on the trail, I would like to give you my love during this season. But let's not stop there and continue through the year. I love you all. May you and your family share that love always!!!! Merry Christmas!!!!
