  1. Hoping for a quick response on this. How do I includea a link when loggin a chace other than just pasting the url in the body of the log. I'm not talking about a Forum post, where you just highlihgt the word, click the Insert link Icon and then paste in the url. I want to include a link in a log on a cache page. I've seen it done beofre, just don't know how to do it.

    any help would be appriciated.

  2. On thur afer we got conf. we had found all 120 caches, i fell hurting my old injury on my right roto cuff and new injury I tore my left thigh muscle and i am having a hard time sending this e-mail on my notebook. hopefully iwill be able to go home tomorrow but my daughter and wife Arlene will travel to the final and get it. Poor Richard

awww, Dick, I'm really sorry. After all your work, I was really looking forward to reading your log and your thoughts on the challenge. I have been out of touch for a few days and just got your message. I hope, you're doing better.

    Best of luck!

Thanks Steve, I am home now. I am still sore all over but coming along. I want to thank you for the challenge. Arlene and I were talking that the four days we finished the needed caches were the best trip we have every made. We got to see everything from the rugged North East to the beautiful Paluse Country. Arlene is having a relapse on her stroke probably brought on by my mishap.

When she gets better she will take the Bremerton Ferry and our daughter will pick her up in Seattle and take her to Discovery Park. Thanks Dick and Arlene

You are welcome. I am glad that you enjoyed it and your perseverance to finish it is an inspiration. If you and Arlene would like, let me know when you might be making the trip. I can't promise but if I am able I would like to accompany you to the final. I say you because I still am holding out hope that both Arlene and yourself will recover enough to go for the final. It is a short walk, from parking to the hide and the terrain rating is not really to chalengin. the rating on the cache page is more for the fact that I can not rate the terrains of all caches required to qualify for the final. I'd say the actual terrain is more like a 2*, 2.5* at the most.

  4. I'm heading down tot he Portland CM this weekend so if you are plannig on going and have any questions or just want to alk about the challenge, let me know. We are planning on goign to the pre emachine dinner on Friday and then will be stopping by the CM dinner after it gets dark on Saturday, although we will proabably only be ther for a bit...

  5. I have a permit with four maybe five slots open to hike to and camp at Colchuck Lake for 4 days on the week of August 9. My plan on this trip is to hike up to the lake on the first day and set up camp. Hike up to Aasgard pass and back on the next day from the lake. Fish and rest the following day and then pack up and get out on the fourth day. We have to stay at the lake. The permit I gained will not allow us to camp in the Core.

You don't have to follow my itinerary, but if you think it would be a kick to go up for a few days let me know.

I will need $5 per day per person to pay for the stay ahead of time. That's a 4 day fee and is the fee I'm charged. Payment not received 3 weeks before the date will forfeit your bid for one of the slots. Only individuals interested in the entire 4 days/3 nights need apply. If you go in for partial, I'm still stuck with the full fee.

Joining me so far, are Squarebear and LandRover.

yesbut did you need to enter a lottery to get your Enchantment permit? This came up on a recent hike...

  6. (I doubt that Groundspeak would get involved unless it's a case of one of those 'bots' automatically logging false finds.)

    MrsB

    And in English:

<snip> a bunch of irrelavant information about virtual caches.

while all of that was very good information to have, the OP specificlly stated log books being unsigned, He's not talking about virtual caches...

  7. Hypothetically, if there were a geocacher in your area who was falsely claiming to have found a lot of geocaches, having personally checked the logbooks in several of those geocaches, what would you do to stop this kind of behavior? Furthermore and at what point, if at all, would you notify GS of this persons actions?

It seems to me that the question being asked (and I apologize if I am misinterpreting this) is with regard to caches that are owned by other cachers and not the OP. I asked a similar question once regarding the cache in Everett that requires you to find a TB in order to log it. Someone had logged the cache without ever having found the required TB(s) and so there was no way for them to know where the cache was located. I subsequently stopped by the cache and checked the log and discovered that the person who claimed a find had never really found it; or at least they had not signed the log book.

The general consensus from the broader caching community (I posted this in the general forums rather than the NW forums) was for me to mind my own business and let the CO manage their cache. When I protested, but, but, but... I was basiclly told to shut the hell up.

If the CO is not bothered by it then there is no reason why you should be. If you really need to tell the CO that their cache is being logged without the physical log ever being signed then go for it but don't be surprised if the CO never does anything about it. I presonally don't like deleting logs. But if it is a blatant armchair log, then I will do it...

Not sure if this helps or not but good luck with whatever you decide to do.

  8. I find myself seeing both sides of this argument. On the one hand I see DNF's as usefel to both the CO and future searchers and so I log almost all of my DNF's. It is also useful to reviewers that have to decide if a cache should be archived if multiple DNF's ellicit no response from a non-engaged owner.

I logged a DNF on a cache just yesterday. I logged a DNF on the same cache a week ago. In between, snother cacher logged a DNF on the same cache while there were no subsequent finds. When I logged my second DNF the CO went to check on it, found it where it should be but then decided to post a note and another hint. I went back and found it today. I should never have missed it in the first place.

On the other hand, there are quite a number of hiders in my area that prefer to hide "evil" caches. I am convinced that they prefer DNF logs to Finds. I will usually go and look for these caches once and post a DNF if applicable. On subsequent visits I don't post a DNF because I don't want to give the "evil" hiders the jollys they get by "beating" me.

Considering this, I belong to the its a DNF if I looked for it group. I don't ascribe to the practice of posting a note if I never got out of my car or got chased off by muggles or bears before I got to GZ. I can see it as appropriate and have done it on occaision but I don't think a note saying couldn't search due to muggles is useful in regular practice.

  9. I tend to ignore caches by CO. There are some people who hide caches in a manner that I don't care to look for. I didn't start ignoring caches until I had about 2000 finds or so. By that time my unfound cache radius went out so far that I was starting to get into a territory where the CO's in question hide their caches. I didn't even want to bother looking for their caches when I was out in those areas.

  10. One of the best I've seen. If you look closely at telephone poles you will notice that they often have little 1" diameter metal discs naile dto them. These are some sort of registration mark I think. Someone took one of those discs off and nalied it to the cap of a falcon tube, hen drilled a hole in the telephone pole so that the tube fit in the hole with the cap with thte disc hiding the hole and the tube. Probably a guidline violation but it was still a very good hide...

  11. I don't even know how many reviewers we've got in Washington State. I see lots of different names. They all have been fantastic.

Yes they have been... There is a lot of history for the reviewers in Washington.

Moun10Bike was one of the first and later became PNWAdmin

Team Misguided was the other main reviewer when I first started caching 3 and a half years ago. Although I believe both can still review caches, for the most part neither of them do anymore.

There are several reviewers in Washington that share the job now. Rock Rabbit and Ice and Wind seem to get the bulk of the work in my area with Wizard of Ooze also being somewhat active. Cascade Reviewer also reviews some caches in my area but I think they do most of their reviewing in Eastern Washington, outside of my notification area which is a 25 mile radius from Snohomish.

  12. The question about how to become a reviewer has still gone unanswered and I am far from knowing for sure but I think my speculations might be accurate.

I would think you would need to be in the inner circle of the local caching community. TPTB are not going to let just anyone that says they'll voulnteer do it. They have to know what kind of cacher you are, that you'll stay committed, that you truley care about the sport, that you have thick skin and are not going to fly off the handle at irrate, irrational, uptight geocachers (like me) that complain when they don't get their caches published right away or take exception to guideline violations. They have to know that you are not going to take your own personal caching philosophy as gospil and not publish caches that are reasonable and within the guidlines. In short, you've got to be in the caching clique.

If you really want to be a volunteer my advice would be to join a local caching club. Here we have the Washington State Geocaching Association. I can say for certain that most of the current and former reviewers in our area have come from that organiztion, most have been officers of that club at one time or another. If there is a similar organization in your area join it and get known. Invovle yourself in local events, hold them yourself, attend others but I think beyond that, be nice, and also be liked. I'm not sayin gyou are neither of those things but I am sure it is an important trait. I know who a couple of the reviewers are around here, and for the most part they are all well liked and respected geocachers that have been at the game for a long time.

  13. A couple of questions. We have been thru Ione and it is a long ways from anywhere and has only one cache. Is it possible that if

the Caveman cache is missing that the one near the airport and cafe could be an alternate. Planning on doing Davenport on next trip and the Mystery Cache Measuring Up Davenport where you measure everything in town to get the correct coordinates sure has a lot of chances of being off. Outthere is disabled due to construction has been disabled for a long time. Jamba's Cache is very close and I am not sure if it would count or not. Please Advise Dick

    Hi Dick,

I understand your concerns about Ione. Yes, it is way out there (from the perspective of someone from the West side of the State) which is one of the reasons I included it in the challenge. I see the owner of the lone cache there seems to be no longer engaged; for the time being however, I am going to leave it as is. rocketglider found it while doing the challenge and it seems to be in good shape. If it becomes a problem I will address it but for now you will need to get the Caveman Cache in Ione to qualify for the final. The one at the airport is too far outside the City Limits to be considered a viable option for Ione.

All 3 of the caches around Davenport qualify including the Puzzle and Janbo's Cache. Out There will qualify as well if a person has already found it and once it is re-enabled. For now either of the other two are the only ones available there. There was another cache in Davenport that was active until last year that would also qualify if you'd found that one. Check out rocketgliders bookmark list for that one.

  14. I've always wondered if Cache Machines were primarily a Northwest thing or if they happen all over. Sounds like they don't happen anywhewre to the degree that they do here.

I've been to two cache machines and enjoyed both. The first time was New Years day a over year ago (the TravisL cache machines happen here on a quarterly basis) and I did it with my family in tow. They were warned but even so were done before I was. The second time I teamed up with two other cachers and had an enjoyeable time. We purposely started on a different cache then was indicated as the "first" to avoid the large crowds. I think we only ran into other groups at three or four caches out of 70 that we found on the day.

I'm seriously thinking of going to the one in Portland in a couple of weeks. They are fun when done in moderation. Some locals here in Washington don't miss any. Others never go. some are like me and do one or two a year. My opinion is to try it and judge it for yourself. If you like the social aspect of caching then you will most likely enjoy Cache Machines.

  15. If you don't like the cache, don't go find it!

This statement always bothers me. A park and grab or LPC might be obvious to some or even many but in a lot of cases, how are you supposed to know if you will like it or not before you go and look for it? Descriptions vary, most LPC's and rock walls don't say that is what they are in the description. When you've just driven 5, 10, 15 miles or more to an area to find a cache or caches and you get there and find out it's an LPC are you supposed to just leave and forget you ever came?

Looking at the satellite view of a cache and I see it is in a parking lot, there are some curious slanting shadows on the ground and the arrow seems to be at the junction of the parking grids and this curious slanting shadow. Wonder if that is an ammo can in a stump? Sometimes it is not foolproof, but a lot can be learned by looking at the sat views.

What if you're on the road, and you don't have a computer with you? I have my cell phone with CacheSense on it, uploaded with caches in the area in caching in. I don't have access to satellite views via my phone.

    Exactly!

  16. If you don't like the cache, don't go find it!

  17. We are heading out to Pullman/Walla Walla this weekend, looking at about 20 cities off our list, not certain how many off the challenege list, but we spend a huge amount of time on the east side of the state. Should be fun.

There are 16 places in the Southeast Corner of the state South of I-90 to the Oregon border between the Tri-cities and Idaho. If you stretched yourself up to Spokane you could find 4 or 5 more.

    Have Fun!

  18. Was working on the internet when this cache popped up. Quickly out the door and to the site, the vision of Geowife doing the FTF dance was worth the trip.

Swapped Geocoins and retrieved the FTF prize.

    TFTH SL

My first cache was placed and released on 01/01/08. It took the FTF about half an hour after it was realeased to post his online log. I was pretty proud of it (still am) as far as first hides go, I think it is pretty good. (GC189W0)

  19. Milestones are important to me. I try to make my Milestones special, either on special caches or on friends Caches. If I can make a milestone an FTF I will do that too. I remember wanting to make the Ape Cache my 1500th find but we were going on a trip and I wanted to stop by during that trip and could not make it close enough to make the Ape cache 1500 so I just got it as a regular old find.

I've got what I call a mini milestone coming up (3200) and already have a cache in mind for that. For my first 500 caches or so I considered every 100 caches to be significant enough to devote a lot of attention to the milestones. Once over 1000 I generally use 500 as the significant marker but sometimes still choose something special for the 100 cache increments too. I suppose once I reach 5000 only the 1000 cache increments will really matter much to me.

As far as fudging the numbers go, I've always found the cache I wanted as the particular milesone. Once a cacher deleted a log of mine after my 1000th find and it through my whole milestone hierarchy off. I had to re-log the cache (and threaten the CO not to delete my log again) in order for my 1000th cache milestone to be correct but since I found both of them the same day I had to use a different date to re-log the deleted log. That is the only time I have logged a cache out of order, at least when it mattered.

  20. We are heading out tomorrow for a 3 day trip, south and then along the Columbia. The only one that has me concerned is Vader which has only A Crafty Hide. I must be the only one that doesn't know what the Crafty style of hiding is. Would appreciate a hint. dick

    Dick,

I'll send you a personal message...

  21. Our first find ever but our second hunt. The kids were so excited. My GPS isn't that great (it's a TomTom made for roads) and so the hint was very helpful. Left a samll crystal and signed the log as FobesFamily. TFTFUN

I used the TomTom that I got for when I travel to unfamiliar cities to find caches for the first 8 months or so that I cached. I found nearly 400 caches using the TomTom until a friend took pity on me and loaned me his 60CS to use until I got my own 60CSx a couple of months after that. I've been using that ever since.
