  1. The final hunt will take place on 11 April 2009 at the village called Tonteldoos. Further details will be made available soon.

Average difficulty for all caches combined is 2.08 and the average terrain is 1.69. Days left to qualify for the big and final tonteldoos = 24 days. 141 different cachers paid a visit. Little change in data since last run. Only 3 cachers have a chance to find the final one unless a serious attempt is done.

The following cachers have the following clues.

    _________________________________________________________________

    18 Clue (Through to final)

    RedGlobe

He was the first to achieve 18 clues and is now relaxing with a book on Anglo Boer Wars and an ice cream while practising Yoga to relax his mind. Well done.

    _________________________________________________________________

15 Clues (Every 8 days one tonteldoos must be found)

gerhardoosMPsa - Hanover, Hildebrand and Groot Trek

We are leaving on 25 or 26 March for the final ones.

12 Clues (Every 4 days one tonteldoos must be found)

Urban Hunters – Groot Trek, Guerilla, Paul Kruger, Savanah, Krugerhof, Hanover.

Urban Hunters are no longer Urban - they are mobile and have only one word in all conversations.

6 Clues (Every 2 days one tonteldoos must be found)

DiePienaars, Fish Eagle, Glider Slider, Team Ginger, Wazat.

Team Ginger especially the smurfie is sharpening their claws in order to get to some more tonteldoos hunts on their list. They plan to finish the series with a hunt for the final one. They already have plans in place.

Team Glider Slider is also sliding his way up for more tonteldose.

5 clues (Every 1.8 days one tonteldoos must be found)

Antron, Danie Viljoen, iPajero, KeithWood , Strider_SA, Tricky Vicky & Mickey.

Maybe we need to keep an eye on iPajero, he moves very fast and quickly and he finds them day or night.

    Succesfull Cache finds, excluding owners:

    Vredesboom (41), Louwtjie (40), Howick (26), Machadodorp (21), Balmoral (19), Groot Trek (18), Young Paul (18), Jacobs (17), Transvaal (16), Hanover (12), Paul Kruger (12), Hildebrand (11) and Battle of Majuba (9), Guerilla Taktiek (7), Boekenhoudt ( 6), Savannah (5) Bloedrivier (5), Krugerhof (4)

Caches that was not found (DNF):

    Krugerhof (3), Hildebrand (2), Bloedrivier (1), Transvaal (1), Groot Trek (1), Louwtjie (1)

  2. :) Nope you are bending the stats on the question about the cachers with finds in all provinces. I have finds in all provinces. Only one in the North Cape. I think you cut out many cachers with only one find.

But for sure GSAK is a must to have program. It is so powerfull that it has no end.

  3. Byt hom honne.

I am waiting for confirmation and then my log will be done. I am still battling with the game of Yamar. I got some help from him. Now I am stuck again. The third e-mail is now one his way.

I even went the dubious way and I decompiled his game to get to the source. Did this help me? Not much, I am sitting with pages and pages of programming and I need one more step to get this game completed. I can see the end of the game but to get there I need to follow a lot of variables. Maybe quicker to play the game. This is an arm chair cache. If I look at the effort that was done then it was an enormous task and it is worth doing and it is much more difficult than a normal cache hide and listing. If you go deeper into the back ground of this game then you will noticed that he actually used a specific location and he changed this into a virtual world with a lot of imagination.

Is it worth doing? Yes, it is another challenge where you have to get to the end in a virtual world. But the end of the game is not the end. It does have a very strange twist in it. The game does test your thinking skills and it does develop your other side of the brain. But again we have different opinions about different things. Some will try some will not. If we were all the same it will be a real boring world. Gerhard

  4. Virtual Hunt

Ok, I looked for some strange ones and I found this one. It is not easy. Is there anyone that done this one before. I downloaded the program and I started with the game but somehow I am stuck. This is an armchair cache – but with one big challenge.

    Gerhard

  5. I myself would log it. There is still a challenge in some of them. We discussed the question and my answer for this specific cache and quess what. It sparked a huge debate on the co-ordinates. My answer was challenged big time. In the end I think we all learned something again. I tried to find the two dnf’s and I went through the logs for a long time but my pc started to hang. I would love to read the two DNF’s. Gerhard

  6. Ginger, there is still hope left. It is not a fact cast in stone that a cacher with 18 clues will find the FTF for sure. The person with the 18 clues is under pressure and he is rushing and he could make serious errors. He does have a lot of other cachers breathing down his neck. Some people cave in under pressure for example me. The higher the pressure the more precise I want to go and that makes it messy and slow. If I read your team correctly then you and your mate will say with a smile “Give me much more pressure - please”. This is the part that worries me.:o:)

The cacher waiting for his turn patiently has time to relax and have an hour to think about the clues and how they all fit together. They could move in quickly and get the FTF. I would love to have the FTF but at the end it will be much more fun to see how this is going to turn out. It should be great fun no matter who gets the FTF and I am going to enjoy this one.

  7. Hey Anlufu you were not supposed to get out of the cupboard with this issue. It was supposed to be kept privately and to be used as an example.

To admit a mistake is the characteristic of a great person. We all make mistakes. Well done and you deserve all my respect. I will now delete the log from your listing and the issue will be resolved. Feel free to have a cup of coffee with me when I am in the area. It will be great to meet you and to show you that I have no hard feelings - at the end it is only a game.:blink:B)

    Gerhard

  8. Oops, I thought you were driving with a vehicle. At least you got to the furthest one. That was planned well. I still have to travel all the way down to Hildebrand. Maybe another cacher can join you and share the expense. I am sure that someone will be prepared to do this if you want to go this way.

It will be good to watch your progress. “Waar ‘n wil is sal daar ‘n weg wees”. It will be boring if only one or two people are available to find a FTF. It will also be interesting to see how many people are going to find the final one in the future. In the beginning I thought it was impossible to find all of them. But RedGlobe is the living proof that it can be done. Luckily not more similar caches were added to this series. I think this is the biggest series in South Africa.

Best of luck and I hope you find them.

    Gerhard

  9. Yes, it would be nice if all the owners can attend but I think it is not something we can demand. Circumstances such as family, work, timing and money issues could limit the ability to attend. But I would love to see the owners at the event.

You are in a great position to find many caches on your way. You did find Hildebrand which is the furthest one away. Hanover is on the way, Groot Trek, Savannah and Guerrilla is also aligned. This will give you 14 clues. In one day you could find Young Paul, Paul Kruger and Boekenhoudt which will add to 17 clues.

Then only Krugerhof is left. Easy to do this one. You leave Pretoria on the day of the event at 02h00 and go for a quick visit to Krugerhof and then back to Tonteldoos.:rolleyes:

    Well done.

    Gerhard

  10. Let me tell you about a cache that I logged that was not there. Judge for yourself. To every story there are three sides – your story, my story and the other story. I will not mention a name, gender, cache name or location. My idea is not to nail the owner but to highlight that you sometimes reap what you have sowed. If it does happen – do not cry. Take it on the chin and move on.

I visited this specific cache the Friday and I informed the owner by cell that the cache was gone. I was accompanied with a cacher that found it and he also verified that the cache was gone. Exact details were given to me of the hide that was done. I gave the owner a courtesy call to inform him/her that the cache is gone. The owner promised to replace the cache on the Saturday. This was not done at gun point but at free will this was offered.

I then postponed my planned trip to the other caches and I went back the Sunday with my brother for the first time. Guess what? The cache was not there. We then went back 3 times in a row to enter my name on a stupid piece of paper. Every time I had to skip the other cache hunts because of this owner. This is my world – you stick to your words and you deliver what you say and you do it against all obstacles and in all circumstances. You mean what you say and you have no excuses. This is the way we love and live. After the third time I was jumping up and down at this cache. Every time I went a little bit higher. I was out of my mind. I was dadgum angry as this was a total waste of time and money. If you can’t fulfil your promise then you take your cell phone and you phone me “Listen monkey face I am not going to replace the cache as promised”. This I can handle. But to be fooled three times in a row is not that nice. This cache is on the opposite site of the others I planned to hunt. I travelled more than a 1000 km to visit this cache and this was the reward. Only once in a year I have the opportunity to find caches in this area and sometimes I only have a bi-annual chance.

I told my brother “Now I will log this find. Let us annoy the cache owner, time to get even, time to teach him/her a lesson”. Maybe he/she will think about this log and he/she will delete it but just maybe this person will think why it was done and maybe she/he will learn a lesson. Eventually the reviewer had to kick up sand months after this incident to get the cache working again. I was expecting the cache owner to delete the log but it never happened. Yes, it does bother me and I do have a soul and conscience. We kept the log on the listing and we hoped for someone to query it, no queries were done.

We are on our way to this cache again and we will visit it. We will correct the log and the date of the second visit will be entered to make it legal. But think about this one. I lost many cache finds just because I trusted an empty promise. Sometimes we must read between the lines and try to work out why certain things do happen. I logged the find to annoy the owner. But the owner never understood the message and he/she never could understand the log. Yes, I also know that this person will be reading this message and maybe he/she will deny it. But I was in the company of another cacher that overheard the conversation. If I speak to a person I normally turn the speaker on for everybody to understand what is happening if there is common interest.

Do not worry I will visit your cache to sign the log and to correct the date unless you disable it out of spite. I will then delete the log and forget about this cache – but that I can plan and it will not hamper me – not again. Sometimes the obvious is not the obvious and sometimes one have to accept the consequences of your empty promises.

  11. If team Ginger can climb that high in the Drakensberg with a smile on their faces then we can expect some real action. Maybe the penalty is too lenient.

I think it is going to be a nice event – you can buy cheese, you can buy peach brandy and real fresh food from the farm and you can meet the friendly people of Tonteldoos. During my recent visit I really enjoyed the cheese platter at the little restaurant. This is probably the biggest thing that happened to them since the Anglo Boer Wars. Can’t wait to do visit this little village again. Are they ready for us? Gerhard

  12. This is an interesting dilemma. I believe that the FTF prize was selected by Sakkie for a specific reason. Only cachers with all 18 clues can be legible for the FTF. This is hard but this is what the majority decided on this issue.

But with fair trading of clues all other cachers should be able to participate in the event. You will need the 18 clues for the event. There is a difference in effort and it should be compensated for. A time penalty should be instituted for the various classes of finds. This could be seen as fair and just. Work on a penalty for example of 10 minutes for every cache that was not visited in persona. For example a cacher has visited physically 3 caches. He still needs to visit 15 caches personally. He has to trade his 3 clues to get 15 more clues. A time penalty of 15 x 10 minutes should thus apply. Another cacher visited 9 caches and he need to find 9 more. His penalty will be 9 x 10 minutes and he will have to trade 9 clues to get the other 9 clues. Just my personal opinion.

RedGlobe – all my sympathy for the last one. Start early drink a RedBull or two or three and take it step by step. It is a good one and it keep you in suspense right up to the last moment. IJ did put a lot effort in this well designed cache. At the end you will enjoy it when it is done. Good Luck. :)

The Hildebrand monument is not available but with some assumptions we found the actual waypoint of the cache. We are in the final phase of getting the last three caches. Our bookings are done and we are ready to rumble or to stumble. Time will tell. We are leaving on the 28 March and we will return on 10 April – a day before the final event.

  13. Cincol,

Maybe we should hold a “check-in” session at Tonteldoos before the hunt start. I think if a cacher ends up in Durban he will not be impressed if he realised the cache is at Tonteldoos itself. The clues must be verified and it must be checked for accuracy and correctness before we run around. This series was active for about a year and many a gremlin can creep in.

Time is running out. We are seriously planning for our trip to Cape Town. The only real problem and frustration is that the guys in Cape Town planted so many nice caches that I do not know where to start and where to end. I am also trying to set a date to meet Cism – it will be nice to meet him for a coffee. Pity there is no event at that time.

Cincol do not ruin our friendship with the final one. :(:)

    Gerhard

  16. I love it when people put action to words. I will support a clean up anytime. It will only foster healthy relationships with the authorities and we will have a win win situation. This should not be once off but regularly. Gerhard

  17. The only thing we can do is to minimize the impact. It starts with the owner of the cache and the cacher that is visiting.

Just recently I was quite disgusted to notice a cache in a highly eco sensitive area in MP. I visited this cache and the hide was done extremely well. This cache is a good example of how it can be done with very little impact to the environment. The listing even explains how to get to the cache – step on stones and leave no trace. The cache was not a quick find. The stones in this area are too large to overturn and the hide was good. I sat down for a while at the cache and I could not find anything that does not belong in that area. No damage to the environment was noticed. At this cache the owner did accept responsibility and his listing was addressing the environmental issues and it appears as if the cachers are adhering to the rules. Cachers and environmental sensitive areas can live side by side and this cache proves it. But one insensitive cacher could change this forever. It takes two to tango.

In the same language I also must state that I visit some deserted cache locations and I found coke tins and Power Ade bottles at the cache site. At one cache I was the first person at a new location just to find an empty milk bottle in a relative isolated area. This is not the way to go.

I visited some caches where I follow the trails in the long grass. The cache owner must accept responsibility and he must move the cache to a different location if foot paths start to form. Tell tales such as grass disturbed should not be a problem. If established paths develop then rain will form soil erosion and that is a problem. Last year I visited a cache location where it appeared as if a bomb exploded in the area. Nearly every stone was overturned in this area and anybody can see that this is not normal. If you need to turn a stone then you need to replace it in his exact location.

Worse of all is the article that Glider Slider is mentioning. Someone is looking for the reasons why all the stones are overturned at the Smuts property. It is a matter of time before they find the root cause and then it will be another issue for FishEagle to resolve. We don’t need this type of publicity. As cache owner you need to accept responsibility and you need to speak to them before they discover the cache. Place the cache near the foot path and you will reduce the environmental impact in a sensitive area. Many will not agree but act before they act and before it becomes a major pain.

There is a lot we can do to reduce the environmental impact. Just recently I had to take a short cut in a nature reserve. I had a good look around and found some animal foot paths and I used them to get to the cache. No new ones were formed and no damage to the fauna and flora were done. At the end it boils down to accepting responsibility for your action. Of soos die bybel se “Dit wat jy saai sal jy maai”. I also believe that education do play an important role. Geocaching is for all walks of life and I believe that there are some cachers that do not understand the impacts of their actions. Just recently I visited a cache and after a while I realised that I am causing damage to the location during the search process. I stopped and I logged a DNF. The next time I will contact the owner and request more details. If he refuses to assist then I will just move to the next hunt and forget about this one. If most of the cachers do the same then the owner should realise that something is wrong. The owner will not like several DNF’s with reference to damage to the environment – we can force him to change the cache or to add more hints.

On the other side of the coin I think our reviewer is capable to make rational decisions. If you notice severe damage at any cache location you should report it to the cache owner or to the Reviewer. I personally reported some caches were severe damage were noticed and the Reviewer did investigate it further and in each case corrective action was done. If a cacher does notice these kinds of damages then he should report it. It is not nice to blow the whistle but it is criminal to walk away from this. We have the power to make the difference. In most cases it is not the cache owner but the visitor. If one of my caches does any environmental damage I would appreciate it if a visitor can highlight this to me. We should be open minded and we should try to understand the concerns without getting too touchy. Yes, it is not nice if cachers is giving you a hard time but take it on the chin and learn from it. No one is perfect.

I also should mention that a couple of caches did show me some real serious dump sites in Gauteng. Not the fault of the owner or other cachers but muggles in the area. Maybe we should hold more CITO events and maybe we should proactively clean our environment for our children’s sake. Maybe if we start cleaning the areas then muggles will learn. Maybe we should look at CITO event as educational events. Get some locals involved and explaining why and the impacts. If you change the mind of one person you have achieved the goal.

    Gerhard
