  1. I finally did find some good posts here comparing the 60/76 series with the PN-40. The odd thing is that the search engine here will not accept search terms smaller than 5 characters so good ole Google found them for me - I just had to dig through pages of search results. Here are a few good threads from Groundspeak and others: PN-40 vs. 60Csx Another thread Yet another! A good real world test from another site From the Delorme Forum more side by side (follow all of the document links also) I pre-ordered the PN-60w - let's see if I have buyer's remorse ;-)
  2. We use the geocaching.com app for the info part. You need a real GPSr to get to GZ.
  3. "This item will be released on June 1, 2010." Pre-order only. Wasn't it June 10th earlier?
  4. What kind of conditions did you experience the problem in?
  5. Does anyone know what antenna configuration the 78 series will have?
  6. I'm just curious if anyone else might happen to own both a PN-40 and 60Csx or 76Csx and would be interested in sharing their experiences. Sorry to keep belaboring the point, but I want to be sure!!!
  7. Thanks TL - found the Searching UT posts. Interesting. My 76 has the same guts as a 60 - just a bit more ergonomic with the buttons on top and it floats! Thanks WT for the pic - impressive! I have been reading all of the stuff I can find about the Cartesio chipset - which ain't much. I have a SPOT device and the idea of sending txts via satellite interests me a great deal. The cool maps on the PN series intrigues me quite a bit also. HOWEVER, just undecided to pre-order the 60w. Guess I can return it! I wish I had a 40 to play around with....
  8. Since the 76 and 60 series had the same guts, I wonder if a new "62" is on the way?
  9. Thanks TL...I'm thinking about leaving the Garmin camp, but no info I have read can convince me the accuracy of the Delorme's top of the line units are on par accuracy wise with my GPSMap76Csx. I want the cool maps, but accuracy is more important!! My understanding is the PN series needs to be held horizontal for best reception? My 76 works vertical or horizontal the same. Just want to be sure before I shell out the clams. Any links to threads? I can't find any decent comparisons that aren't purely subjective.
  10. Any news?? Will my maps that I have downloaded work on the PN-60 and will Topo 9.0 work with the PN-40? Also I am about to buy a new map subscription, should I wait or will it work with Topo 9.0 and the PN-60? Thanks If history is any indication, all you'll have to do is update the maps you've already cut to get the PN-60's serial number registered to them. The move from Topo 7 to Topo 8 and PN-20 to PN-30/40 was pretty painless.
  11. don't expect it to be as good as a sirfIII. It will get you to within 10-20 meters. Useless under tree's. Use a iphone in conjunction with your garmin. I use my iPhone 3G some when caching. The accuracy is greatly improved when you have cell coverage - so it becomes useless for caching away from cities - navigates fairly well but will loose its map background without cell service.
  12. I am on my second gps76Csx - I lost the first one (long story). It is dead on - easy to use, easy on batteries, and it floats (it really does, I "tested" it!) I have it loaded with CIty Nav, Topo 2008 and 24k East.
  13. I have the 76Csx - similar guts to the 60 but floats and is waterproof. It also has better ergonomics with the keys above the display. It's hard to beat Garmin because of the aftermarket support IMHO.
  14. Garmin 76CSx - waterproof and floats - love the ergonomics
  15. That's what I do for my 76Csx and it works like a champ!
  16. The advice helped a bunch. Picked the cache, selected autoroute follow road, got close and parked. Recalculated off road, hiked to the cache. Thanx again!!! BTW - mo town man you can autoroute with the 24k topo maps
  17. Thanx for the input guys...I'm going caching tonight. I'll try out the recalculate method tonight.
  18. If you are autorouting you can do Recalculate | Off-road to get the compass mode up. In my opinion, when the autorouting has gotten as close as it can get you two things should happen: * automagically go to off-road / no lock on road * automagically go to Normal from Battery Saver mode How do I ensure that the settings on the GPSr will cause the unit to switch to off-road?
  19. You can't auto-route with the topo maps. The basemap is pretty much useless as it has only the very very major roads. You need city navigator if you plan to use your 76CSX for turn by turn. Sorry as its going to set you back another 100 to 120 dollars. --danny I may have not made myself clear. I will list the steps as to what I am doing and my issues should be more clear: -Press [Find] - then select "Geocache" - scroll to a cache number and press [enter] - highlight "go to" and press [enter] - GPSr prompts to select "Follow Road" or "Off Road" - slect "Follow Road" and press [enter] - GPSr displays route and starts giving directions to turn based on road (left in 0.3mi onto unpaved road, etc) - I drive to location of trailhead or similar parking area - get out and start walking *** at this point the compass bearing screen would be nice *** Before I loaded the 24k maps the unit would beep and tell me I was arriving at GCXXX and then at some point would switch from "map display" mode to the "compass bearing" mode by itself. Now the unit just stays in map mode and tells me to turn around if I drive to a more suitable parking location or to a known trailhead and I have to [Page] around quite a bit to get to the compass screen when I start walking. I just figure I have something set-up wrong with the GPSr since it used to a bit different.
  20. I am sure that this is a user issue. After caching with my 76Csx with nothing other than basemaps, I was happy with the performance of the unit and my ability to use it. I bought the 24K topo's because I like to hike a bit. So far they have been great (only hiked twice with them in the back country), but I don't have this autorouting thing down. I like having the road turn-by turn especially in areas I am unfamiliar with, but how can I go to the off-road mode or "compass bearing" mode when I get out of the car automatically? Since I have modified the factory settings very little, I guess I am also asking what is a more ideal set-up for geocaching? Sorry for the 2 questions in the same post. I did a bit of searching and FAQ reading but I am more confused now than when I started!
  21. I guess I am always the naysayer, but I recommended the HCx to a friend who was getting into the geocahe thing. He had used my 76CSx some and wanted it but did not want the price. So I recommended the new HCx since everyone said it was just as good but cheaper. Less than a month of moderate use and it no longer receives any satellite data. The compass seemed ok on the unit but would go crazy if he had his cell phone turned on wearing it on his belt and holding the GPSr. Holding my 76Csx and using the compass did not seem to be affected by the cell phone. He exchanged it and the new one did not work out of the box. He has sent it back to the place he purchased to exchange for a 60Csx - he likes the way it feels in his hand compared to my 76. My $0.02
  22. Thanx for the link...my card does not say that. BTW - I did load the maps straight to the card and then put the card back into my gps. It works fine that way, just a little inconvenient. Anyone else see this same problem?
  23. Hope this helps Good info - I do not have the package anymore - is there any other way to tell? I also think I'll try loading the maps straight to the card while it is plugged into my PC then put th card back into the GPSr.....
  24. I have also checked for software updates on the web.
