  1. Forgot to add. Garmin in their wisdom have done something odd with the road lock in the new units. You will find that if a waypoint is within 30 odd meters from a road, the unit refuses to disengage from the road even though your mode of navigation is off road. This means that one needs to switch the road lock off for the unit to disengage. In my old unit (GPSV) they fixed this problem so one could navigate via road to within spitting distance and then switch to off road, all while the road lock is on. In the new units, it only disengages if the waypoint is sufficiently far (seems to be about 30m) from a navigable object i.e. road, and the road lock is on. Now this is a right pain in the behind. Garmin's recommendation is to manually switch road lock on and off or just leave it off. Switching the road lock off impacts autorouting, so I leave mine on. So, if there is a roadside cache, I know the map view will not work properly and that's the reason why I started using the compass page. Garmin refuse flatly that it is an issue despite the fact that they have the documented patch on older GPSr's to fix the problem. GR - is this why I sometimes get within a few metres of a cache, but my Garmin unit still says that I am (e.g.) 250m from the spot. And does not update dynamically?
  2. Wazat Congratulations on your 50th!
  3. I just bought 5 coins and 3 TB's from Europe to Africa. It's great tracking them on google earth - so cool to see their progress.
  4. Madog - you are a legend - those stats are impressive (and I'm not just talking about the finds)! A great job! I just need to complete my PHD in stats and I think I'll go that way. Brilliant.
  5. Congrat Littleclan on your 100 - big brother I've got some catching up to do!!!
  6. If you're looking for a base in Africa- you're welcome to post one to me and I'll get it into circluation for you!
  7. Is it possible to see how many countries you have found caches in on your profile? The travel bugs breaks it down by type etc. - similarly for types of caches found (traditional / earthcache / event etc.) - but can one also get a breakdown of caches in various countries? Thanks
  8. Hi Does anyone have any experience with Premium membership to the Geocaching.com website? Is it useful for SA? Like caches along the route, member only caches etc? What are the benefits, if any for a South African?
  9. quote]Hi Carbon Hunter, lots of places need caches, but not all are worthy, if somebody can't help you to maintain the cache then the reviewer will not allow the listing. But don't fret about that now, get as many caches as possible in EU, come back to RSA and take it from there. Enjoy Leon Back in SA and had my first local experience. Great to be home and getting the family into GC'ing.
  10. Sorry - link to coin is: http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.as...1f-a8d8940d6c78
  11. I have a TwoP's Geocoin that needs to clock up as many miles as possible before 31 December 2007. I picked it up last week in Frankfurt and brought it to SA. Anyone flying out soon? I can arrange a drop n swap. Thanks
  12. Signed up today - thanks guys.
  13. At the top of the forum, listed as the very first topic is one called "Pinned: Collection Of Existing FAQs." It's in there. Thanks
  14. I've been using the Quest for the last 2 days for geocaching using pedestrian mode. It works well and took me through parks etc., instead of on roads. Works well in Wurope where there is a large cycle/pedestrian network.
  15. I'll see if I can source a geocoin shop here in the hague - but do not have a geocaching "friend" this side. Will certainly set up a few caches in SA - and hopefully into Africa as I travel there a lot and I see places like Kampala really need some caches.
  16. I just wanted to make sure that you were aware of the excellent Quest FAQ permalinked at the top of this forum. Sorry - but where is the link to the Quest II FAQ?
  17. Using a Quest II as a handheld on a bicycle - I was getting around 5m most times - but into trees and near buildings it dropped to around 10m and even as low as 15m.
  18. I'm new to caching - but my Quest II worked fine on a cycle trip aroound Holland for caching. Rasonably rugged - but not in the same class as the handhelds.
  19. I have just got a Quest II. Spent the weekend geocaching around Holland on a bicycle with the Quest in one hand!!!! Worked well - but did loose signal from time to time - so appletree's suggestion appears a good one. Thanks
  20. Thanks wazat I look forward to doing some hometown caching in the next few weeks. I have a few geocoins and a travelbug that I'm bring with me from Europe. I guess we need a few at home to celebrate the World Cup semi win last night
  21. Hi there A newbie from Gauteng. Odd, but I'm getting my first taste of geocaching in the EU. I'm in Belgium & Netherlands and am getting a few logs to start with. See you home soon - and I'm bringing a geocoin with me!
