  1. Hi, is there a way to just select when I want to start and end a track or does it always automatically start right when I turn on the unit? I do not necisarily want the entire track I went but rather just a portion...if i have it on driving from home to a cache location i just want it to track from where i start hiking to the cache but it tracks the entire thing...i know I can then go and select a portion of it but I didn't know if a start/stop option existed for it. Also...once I save a route, is there a way to tell the distance between the start and end of the track? Also the time the track began and ended? At this point I am unable to figure this out. Second, when caching, I will set the coordinates to find and i follow my compass and will be lead right near the cache, but when it says I arrived at the location but then the compass turns off and stops tracking those coordinates because it thinks I have got there...but really i would like to have the compass stay on so I am able to circle a bit and get a feel for the area especially if there is weak signal and it is leading me around a bit and it isn't too accurate. Any ideas on how to make the tracking of those coordinates stay up instead of dissapearing? Thanks for the help!
  2. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with changing to paperless caching and some help on downloading waypoints as well. I have been trying a few programs...easyGPS as well as swiss army for downloading waypoints and neither of them seem to save the user hints like they are supposed to. Which of these programs is better to use? Are they able to download enough information right onto my unit (Garmin vista hcx) for me to go out and cache? I also looked into a program where I can put coordinates onto my palm pilot...do any of those programs work well?? I am just beginning with all this and am some what confused on how to set everything up. Can anyone give me a list of programs/an easy description of the best/simplest way for successful paperless caching?? Any help would be great! Thanks
  3. I just got the Vista eTrex Vista HCx and loaded on some topo 2008 maps as well as city navigator maps. I wasnt able to find where the topo maps were for the longest time and the only way i can get them to display is if I go deep into the map settings and uncheck the citynav map for the region i am in...is there anyway that both maps can be displayed at the same time?? Thanks for the help
  4. awesome thanks for the help ill maybe try some different ones
  5. Hi, am I able to load all geocache coordinates onto my Vista HCx so when I look at the maps it shows which caches are where? Or do I have to individually load which cache waypoints I want onto it? Thanks for the help any other hints on how to manage my caches with the VistaHCx would be great! -Getuptogetdown
  6. Hi, I just ordered the Garmin etrex Vista HCx and have been reading that rechargeable batteries are the best way to go. Are there any batteries that shouldn't be used with the unit? Are there any specific rechargable batteries that work better than other? Hold the charge longest? I have read some things about eneloop batteries being really good...how do they work? do they have as much charge as a regular battery?? Any help is greatly appreciated! -Getuptogetdown
  7. CN works really well for me. The maps in my area are very up to date, including some road rerouting that was just completed last summer. There are also street level maps for many of the very small communites in the area (i.e. ones that have six streets total) and all of the rural roads. That being said, there are others that say that their areas are missing some roads that have been there for several years. The data source for the Canadian data (DMTI) is different from that of the US data (Navteq) and may be on a different (not necessarily better or worse) update schedule. However, I think that overall, people are happy with CN. I can't really compare to Verizon, since I have never seen what you have. You could try looking at your travel area on Garmin's coverage viewer on their website. Find an area that you know is relatively new and see if it is included in the maps. thanks...so is there a difference between citynavigatorNT and just normal city navigator other than NT is compressed so it can fit better? Is there any down side to NT? does it have less detail??
  8. how well does citynavigator work?? I am currently using my verizon wireless cellphone and paying $10 a month for turn by turn directions...although I dont like paying a monthly fee it gets me everywhere I need to go every single time. I tend to head to various small towns and back rounds and hidden treasures and it seems to do great. If I dropped the amount of money for city navigator I would cancel my cellphone navigation but would be really dissapointed if it doesn't do as well...how reliable is it?
  9. Hi I'm new to this whole thing and am going to be ordering a vistaHCx in the next week. I have a kingston 2gb microsd i use for my phone that i will most likely pull out of there and use in the until since I don't really use it much with my phone. I am also going to be ordering the garmin us topo 2008. I want to buy city navigator as well but am a little confused on what is the newest version of it. I am ordering from amazon and someone in a review said they ordered v8 and there was a newer version? Is this true? What should I look for to make sure I get the right version?? The next question is, having both us topo and city navigator: I want to have access to both of them (even if they are on seperate cards) but want to have the complete maps incase I travel(I sometimes go on various road trips) and dont want to have to upload parts on. I am considering buying another 2gb microsd...can I fit both maps on one 2gb card? Or should i order another 2gb card and keep them seperate? will each one fit on a 2gb? Thanks for the help! -Getuptogetdown
  10. Hi, I know there have been some of these already posted but I wanted to get into more detail. I have been borrowing an old etrex from a friend and find it to be really unreliable so far mostly because it is 4 or 5 years old and loses signal fairly easy. I have been doing a lot of research on the Vista HCx and the 60CSx. Both got very good reviews and am having problems choosing which one I should get. Right now there is a $50 rebate on the 60CSx which would only set it apart from the Vista HCx by about $75 so money isn't something I need to take into consideration. Through research some things I noticed were: -The Vista HCx has a better battery life (25 hours vs. the 18 hours the 60CSx offers) -The Vista HCx is smaller and sounds a little more portable. -Both seem to have pretty much the same exact features. -The 60CSx has the external antenna built on which I'm assuming get's better signal. -The 60CSx comes with a microSD card for maps (I already have a 2gb microsd I can put in) Those are the major things I have been contemplating. I will be using the GPS for mainly geocaching but would also be loading on the topo maps (not sure if one handles them better than the other). This is something I want to have many opinions on before I make an investment since this is something I do not want to replace for awhile. Any help would be great! Thank you -Getuptogetdown
  11. Hi, I know there is an FAQ site about geocoins and a fair amount of info on them, and maybe some threads that I didn't see? I feel like geocoins are like travel bugs in the sense they have a tracking code, they travel and, they can have various missions....what I don't understand is what are the different meanings? People collect these coins? You can make your own coin and send it out and watch it travel online? Is the only different between a geocoin and a travel bug that people collect the geocoins? Thanks for any help! getuptogetdown
