  1. I just read my email from Mr. Meaded and was pumped. Came right over to share it and found that everyone already knew. This is great, I couldn't be happier. We are fortunate that Mr. Meade and the State Parks were willing to listen to us and I want to thank everyone who participated as well. I would have hated to move my cache on Presque Isle. "...Not all those who wander are lost..." Mike, I couldn't possibly be a sock puppet! If you will check, my profile shows many physical caches hidden in Oklahoma and has many other geocachers with finds on those caches! Wouldn't a real cacher want credit for all of that, rather than just wasting all of that effort on a sock puppet? I was just pulling everyone's GPS lanyard when I said that I (majicman) was a sock puppet... you know me, anything to STIR IT UP! However, this entire posting is subject to my factually-challenged, demented and twisted mind and ego! --majicman Yeah I know, the 3 minutes I was confused for was about how long it took me to go from reading your post about being a sock puppet, sending an email, then checking your profile (darn 56k). TIl then I'd only read your posts (though highly entertaining could have been an ingenous sock puppet), I rarely if ever check pofiles on the forums. Once I checked your profile, saw you had found and hidden caches as well as had a website I realized you were definately legit.....maybe... "...Not all those who wander are lost..." 4. I've found over 200 caches with mine everything from 1/1's in the desert to 4/4's on mountains or under thick tree coverage. Only places I've really had problems are narrow gorges and in the Old growth forests of the NW but once I got out of my car there I could pick up sats fine. Don't get me wrong I'd love a V and I'm sure I wouldn't go back once I had one, but there's nothing wrong with the venture "...Not all those who wander are lost..."

  10. quote:Originally posted by The Leprechauns:Caches under dense cover are very common at least around these parts. What I would LOVE to hunt instead would be an offset cache whose published coordinates took me to a point in an open clearing, where there would be good GPS reception, then I would be told (either in the published clues or at that spot) to proceed on a compass bearing of XXX degrees, for a distance of YYY yards, straight into a jungle thicket at the bottom of a ravine. Would be different/much more fun, and perhaps easier to find, than the "stumble for 45 minutes around the bottom of the ravine trying to get more than 2 satellites" routine. ...." Since your somewhat near me: Keep an eye out for my "what a long strange trip it's been cache", thicket, compass bearing, bottom of gorge, no gps reception, and more. Guessing around a 4.5/4.5 "...Not all those who wander are lost..."

  14. quote:And if you do run into a grizzly or some big black bear, some of the guns you people carry wouldn't really harm them enough to kill them (could be wrong, but bears are pretty tough). _ That's actually a very good point, the LAST thing you want to do is injure a grizzly. When Lewis and Clark headed west the Native Americans warned them of a bear that would not die and would attack it's hunters. They didn't believe it much til they tried it, I think 8 direct hits later it was still coming at them (granted those rifles were much weaker but still) "...Not all those who wander are lost..."
  15. quote:Originally posted by Rockdoctors:Bears are tough. But, the blast alone would scare them away. Bear bangers work great. Did I mention this already? "Trust me I know what the hell I'm talking about!!!" Bear bangers... hmmm never heard of them if I'm ever out in grizzly country again I'll have to check them out, I alway just carried the glorified pepper spray. 19. I prefer good old used car oil. Douse the area and then you have 2 choices. If it's in tupperware: Wait a few days and you can walk on in as most things are dead. If it's in an ammo can: light it up, wait a bit and your ready to go. "...Not all those who wander are lost..."

  23. quote:All people have to do is remember not to hike alone, hike in a group, make lots of noise (carry bear bells) stay at least 100metres away. Never approach or feed any "cute" wild animal.most of the time pepper spray, isn't very effective, because of wind, rain, shelf life, etc. there are a few diferences between a black bear and a Grizzly, but the easiest to remember is that a grizzly bear has a large hump between the shoulders, which is solid muscle, a black bear does not. They are also almost 400kg. A black bear weighs about 150kg. A black bear can climb a tree, grizzlies, can't. STAY ALERT TO STAY ALIVE!! unless you're a hunter, I'd advise to leave the guns at home. Just FIY, Mostly correct but; bear bells actually according to most experts are useless for 2 reasons, 1) they are not that loud and the sound doesn't travel well 2)bears don't associate that sound with humans. Talking loudly, Shouting, or singing works best. There are some reports of juvenile/adolescent grizzlies climbing trees. Most experts advise carrying bear spray, however as you mention it should be new. A fogger style (I've recently heard that foam is better, but I'm not sure on that) is better then a stream as you don't have to aim. Not much can be done about the wind, but at least if you spray it into the wind you'll taste better for the grizzly "...Not all those who wander are lost..."

  25. I've picked up several bugs on my travels, and I usually emailed the owner about what I had planned, removing it from the state, holding on to it, etc. That is by far the best way. "...Not all those who wander are lost..."
