  1. .... within 100 miles of Redding CA....Northern CA, (the real, Northern CA) ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.
  2. Yesterday day we did a 4.5 cache a few miles from my house...We knew where we were to start and we knew it was going to be a bear. Its up a steep ravine past and through some old copper mines, complete with open shaft's. Right in the beginning, after we crossed the creek, just after leaving the truck, I noticed an old skid trail in the woods, heading off in the other direction, but going up hill...we both looked at each other and said, Naaaaa, it couldnt be that easy, that would defeat the 4.5 rating, sooooo we waded, scrambled, rock hopped, climbed and crawled our way to the cache....it was great! On the way out we walked down the old skid trail and back to the truck, in a quarter of the time....... I emailed the cacher and asked him if he knew about the road....he figured it out after placing the cache and decided not to mention it in the report....we did the same. Rock Scout1 cache Like my partner say's....If the pain don't kill ya, it'll make ya strong. ____________________________________________________________ Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it
  3. Just a quick note...... I just talked to tech support and was told the new upgrade (v3.13?) will be out in a couple months, he mentioned that it will be in the new Color Meridians.....he also said they will have a fix to take care of the problem with the Meridian's turning themselves off when you bump the PWR button, you will have to hit PWR then ENTER to turn them off. 4. Try here, they may be able to help.... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/magellan-gps-users/ Meridian owners may want to check this site out... http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Magellan_Meridian/ ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  5. Around here the higher level caches (3.5/5) seem to have the "best" stuff...no problem with folks trading down (yet)...most actually seem to trade up. We have a fellow around here that was putting altimeters in his caches...needless to say there was a rush to be the first. Another cacher's signature item is a first aid kit....been told I need to include one of those in a couple of my caches. How about some poison oak soap for those areas infested with the stuff. Cheap compass's, I've seen a couple that work quite well and only cost around $5.00 Hey Brian...which one's your brother, the one on the left or the one on the right???? ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  6. Had a friend over last night who uses a Garmin Vista and we compared maps from my Meridian Platinum and his Vista...there were some areas where he had perhaps a little more detail in terms of elevation profiles, but over all they seemed more alike then different...when we plugged in the same waypoint, they seemed to show up in the same place on both maps... The biggest complaint he had, and it could be a biggie, is for some reason many of the areas near national forests and parks were so dark they were almost blacked out...I suspect this is either a resolution problem (many of the USGS tops are darkened also, but at least you can read them, perhaps because they are showing private property) We went to one waypoint where there was a search a couple months ago and he couldn't read anything on the map, but my Mapsend Topo program showed the topo of the terrian normally. I would compare the two programs, if possible, and see if this occurs in your area as well. ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them.... 7. dadgum, another mistake...there are 89 pages to read.... See how much I've learned! ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  8. 44 pages on the disk....... Sorry I haven't memorized them all yet...... Not really...... Sorry that is.... ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  9. Thanks....Just what I was looking for! ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  10. That works, but it shows me where I am at the moment, and then I have to follow the "line" to where the actual waypoint is...if that waypoint is 300 miles away it takes a bit of work and button pushing to get there....perhaps I'm just spoiled or lazy, but it would be nice to just push a button or two and go to the actual waypoint. Thanks for the input .... Have fun with you Plat! ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  11. We never ran into compatibility problems with a mix of GPS, as long as everyone was on the same Datum, North reference, Coordinates (D.M.M, D.M.S,) etc...the biggest problem we ran into was dealing with other agency's using the same "numbers" we were...we spent hours once searching the wrong area before we realized that the chopper was using different specs then the guys on the ground were. I don't know for sure, but you may find slight differences in accuracy between the map programs (Mapsend/Mapsource), but since you are usually using the Coordinates to find locations and not actually the maps themselves, I wouldn't expect any problems....Many of the people with SAR are using GPS'r without map programs, I did for years. I used an old Magellan Tracker for many years without any problems.....and I absolutely love my new Platinum Good luck, stay safe...... 12. Perhaps this is obvious and I just missed it, but is there a faster way to get the screen to a "Go To" way point on my Platinum with out having to "fly" the cursor there? Thanks ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  13. Check this out... http://joe.mehaffey.com/magellan-codes.txt This should keep ya busy, although some sound kinda risky... ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  14. There is a whole list of key combinations that will do all sorts of things to your Meridian, some kind of risky...heres one combination that could come in handy...I'll keep looking for the rest...... Below are the recovery instructions for a dead MAP330 or Meridian. They are written for the MAP330 but they work just as well for the Meridians. 1. If your MAP330/Meridian in in a "locked up" state (stuck on), power it down by holding down MARK/GOTO and the ESC keys and press ENTER. This will power down the unit. 2. Power it up in "Software upload mode" by holding down MARK/GOTO and the ESC keys and press POWER. Unit shold power up with a "software upload mode active" message. 3. Run magup.exe, select NO at the dialog box. Click on "Expert" and checkmark "On" for the "Expert Upload" setting (be sure MAP 330/Meridian is selected as the "Unit Type" and click "OK" 4. Select the firmware file by clicking on "File" then "Select Code File". The firmware file should have a name like ZORRO204.SRE or ZORRO204.HEX or MRDN3_08.HEX. 5. Click on "Upload" and click "OK". Checkmark "Program Code Only". Check "Upload File". ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  15. I got some for my Magellan and like many of you, they included several packets of additional screen savers to use in caches... This is one OK outfit. Who ever runs their customer service department deserves a bonus. ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  16. I started with a Magellan Tracker years ago for SAR, I just got a Meridian Platinum a couple weeks ago. When I got my first, Magellan was the hot unit...it lasted through a lot of beatings and worked as well as I could ask for...I got the Platinum for Geocaching and work in the mountains (you can change tracking to lay one down every .01mi) , if I was going to get one for the road, it would be a Garmin. Most of my friends use Garmin....but we still talk to each other ........... ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  17. Ok, so I'm kinda dense....exactally how does it attach to the GPS? I went to the page and still can't figure it out...... ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  18. Welcome!! Good job! glad you all had a good time. I know what you mean about trusting your GPS, on one of my first, I stood on top of the cache at least 3 times before I figured it out. Now, who's gonna show em the secret handshake? ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  19. Press and HOLD for about 2 seconds to put the light on low, repeat to put the light on high, repeat again to turn the light off...the trick is to hold the PWR button down for a couple seconds. Did the same thing myself..... ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  20. I got my Meridian Platinum from Harmony a couple weeks ago, it took 9 days to get to CA, but that was UPS and not Harmony's delay...I have been very happy with my Platinum, it works beautifully....I love the large screen, it locks on fast and stays locked on even under the nastiest conditions (steep canyons and dense trees) and while I don't always have the electronic compass turned on (to save batt) it does come in handy when I am in difficult terrain and constantly checking my bearings, beside's, for the price I paid, it was still a way cheaper and a better deal then the competition, even the Meridian Gold. As I read some where in this forum....if you want to look for a cache, get a Garmin, if you want to find a cache get a Magellan...... Just kidding folks, most of my friends have Garmin's.........not that there's anything wrong with that....... ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
  21. I would go with the Sport Track Map....but then, to be honest, I don't know that much about the Garmin, aside from what I have read and researched when I decided to upgrade my old Magellan Tracker recently.... The general, but not universal, opinion is that the Quadrifilar antenna seems to work better under a canopy. I just got a Meridian Platinum and am extremely pleased with how it locks on and stays on. Keep checking the various posts here, there has been a lot of discussion on the merits of both GPS's for Geocaching.....personally I never buy something just because "everyone else has one", I buy what works best for me....this is my second Magellan. What ever you get will put you within a few feet of what your looking for....have fun! ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....

  24. Well, I just got my Meridian Platinum from the "Brown Truck" this morning....man is it ever an upgrade from my Magellan Tracker. I have been using the Tracker for SAR and Geocaching for the last few years and aside from no map display, or being told how many feet it was to the cache, I can't really say anything bad about the "old" unit..... But this Platinum is a huge improvement...I'm getting between 7 and 8 sat locks in my gear/computer room, with it sitting on my desk..... the 18 MB base map surprised me with the information it had for my rural area, not to mention the whole US......and the 32MB upgrade SD card with Mapsend Topo of Northern CA (custom map section) installed, only took up a little over 8MB. I have only spent a couple hours fiddling with it, playing with some caches near my house and so far I'm very happy ....The total cost for the Platinum, Mapsend Topo program and the 32MB storage card was $371.00, including shipping....and I still get the $50.00 rebate! Time will tell if it will take the beating that my old Tracker took......... ____________________________________________________________ It's not about the mistakes we make, it's about what we learn from them....
