  1. Should I ask Santa to bring me a Garmin Oregon this year for Christmas to replace my trusty 60csx?

I'm already paperless with my Palm, but like the idea of being able to load 5000 waypoints in the Oregon. Does the Oregon, with its firmware updates, now have all the features of the 60csx?

I love my Oregons. I convinced the wife I need two of them, a 300 and a 550 (the latter holds 5000 caches and has the camera). Really nice to have just one device instead of fumbling with the GPSr and a palm. I think the 60csx gets better reception, but not so much better that I'd use it over the Oregon. So, yes, have Santa stuff your stocking with an Oregon, I'm sure you'll be satisfied!

BTW, James, do you have a link to that third party Oregon bike mount?

  2. I have been noticing here in Yuma more and more lately groups going out in all directions and doing as many caches as they can during the day and signing other people's names to the log. I do not feel that is setting a good example for geo caching. Most people work hard for their caching numbers. To me signing for others is like cheating with cards or coping off of some bodies test paper. You can fool some of the people some of the times, but not all the people all the time. Discouraging to hear, but it's nothing new. We ran into the same thing here several years ago with some power cachers, happens all the time. It really gives new meaning to "it's not about the numbers". It bothered me at first, but people will play the game the way they want. At the end of the day you know your numbers are pure and the cheaters' numbers are soiled. Now don't get me started on pocket caches! Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. Just a heads up to everyone out there that knows Randy Thunder-4. Randy ended up in the hospital yesterday evening, and suddenly discovered that his kidney function has dropped to 5% of normal. He has undergone one dialysis treatment already and will have another treatment tomorrow and then again on Sunday. He will be facing the need for dialysis 3-times per week from now on, so needless to say this has been a life-changing revelation for him. He will be in Room 630 at Sharp Memorial Hospital on Frost Street (near Children's Hosp. in Kearney Mesa) until late Monday, and would welcome calls and visitors just about any time. The phone number is 858-939-3400 and just ask for Room 630. Feel free to call me at 858-335-9590 if you want more information. I saw him tonight, and his spirits are good (Randy has such an awesome attitude about everything). I'm planning to go back tomorrow with some comic books or something fun like that.

I got diagnosed with kidney failure five months ago but it feels like it's been much longer. It's been a strange journey with many ups and downs. I only have 2 months to go on dialysis.

My brother Dustin was the closest match and has been chosen to donate a kidney to me. He passed all tests with flying colors. Our surgery will be on October 21st at Sharp Memorial Hospital. I expect to be in the hospital for about a week. I'll be out of work for at least 8 weeks. My brother is expected to be in the hospital for 2 days and his recovery is 2 weeks.

The transplant, if successful will give me a better quality of life but I will have challenges for the rest of my life. I will not need dialysis anymore, but I will have a compromised immune system so I don't reject the new kidney. I still have a lot to learn but I do know that with a compromised immune system, a common cold could possibly send to to ICU.

Hmm, I wonder what my chances are to make it to 5000 finds by this date?

Randy, I should have invited you on our Ojai trip. You can easily do 200 caches in a day up there without breaking a sweat. I know you guys will do fine. Cya,

  4. A full week with no posts on the SD Thread? Gotta bump it up.

Oh, yeah, my new Oregon 550 just arrived today! Just in time for caching with the Dawg Team!! I'll let you know how it performs!

    D!

This is regarding the dawg team. How does it work? Do you go caching and bring your dog?

Sort of... from the DT's profile page:

"Membership to the Dawg Team! only costs you an outing with one of the founding members. For your bipedals' efforts to join us, we will give your bipedal a DT! bumper sticker." Hope you can join us sometime!

  5. Hi,

I'll be in the Disneyland precinct from Jul 23 through to July 30 and am bringing a bag full of TBs and GCs, all looking for new adventures. Some of them have specific US missions.

I think I've used my luggage weight quota and the other half is not happy ;-)

I'd appreciate any recommendations as to caches where I can drop these off, say within 3 miles of the main entry...yes we love walking.

I guess I'll be taking a few back to Sydney with us too

Feel free to email me c/- geocaching.com

    cheers

    Rogpol

I would suggest just doing a PQ for regular-size caches in the area, but here's a couple of possibilities:

    GC1352Y or a bit further away GCWD98

    Good luck,

  6. I don't think this is the right spot for this question but I couldn't find out anything on the tech site. I plan on buying a new gps to replace the ones that were stolen. I loved my 60CSX with a Palm when the Palms crashed again and again (4) I bought the Oregon. The Oregons accuracy left much to be desired so all I was using it for was a PDA. Now I'm thinking of coupling a 60 CSX with an Itouch with the geoc app. The Itouch is MAC instead of Widows based. Anyone out there using this combo and if so how is it working?

Okay, then. iGeocacher claims to support the iTouch: http://www.ayefon.com/geo/

Go to the "next page" link at the bottom, I can't seem to link to that page.

    D!

I think you have to have internet/wifi near you for it to work on the iTouch.

Seems that way. FJ, I have a couple of old pocket PCs, if you want one they run GPX Sonar just fine. Lemme know. Funny they don't seem to have an offline reader for the iPhone/ iTouch.

  8. July 14 Ancient Puli NOT a Dog Lil' Dragon's playtime (GC1BENN)

Took a walk along Southern Wildlife Preserve on the San Diego River as far west as Dog Beach. Dropped off a couple of TB's and a new TNG 9 card at Jake - 101 Dalmatians (GC1H0N3). Saw a man at Robb Field walking a bizarre creature. I strolled over to get a pic. The entire chat was fascinating and although I remain skeptical, I got your critter story :(

"It's not a dog, it's an Ancient Puli; not a dog like a Hungarian Puli." he insisted. Upon petting its head, I was surprised. It had a cranial ridge like a baboon. He said one Doctor thinks the Ancient Puli might be related to a baboon. When I asked about DNA testing, he said, "it shows a dead end and doesn't match anything." Its feet were smaller with much larger front pads than rear but it had dog-like toenails. He said to look up Tibetan Wolves to learn more about the Ancient Puli. In fact, tomorrow he was meeting with National Geographic to try and form an expedition to investigate the part of Tibet that has most of the 100 left in the world; his was the only one in America. This might not happen because the Tibetan tribes allow no one in and protect the Pulis. His Puli 10 years old and he mentioned he knew of 2 other females.

He then told a story of how in WWI the Germans would send massive packs of Police Dogs into the trenches to pin down soldiers who would then be bayoneted and shot by the following troops. The allies eventually brought in Ancient Pulis to join the troops to turn back the packs of German dogs. Ancient Pulis hiss, spin, throw Chi forward and charge like a Komodo Dragon, but are known as defenders and don't attack. He asked me if I knew what Chi is and I said, "Yes, it's like a force from the body" and he explained, "the Puli throws chi forward and it can be felt in the middle of your chest from the back."

He said most dogs run when they see the Ancient Puli because they know it's not a dog. Dogs that try to attack would get wads of fine dreadlock-like hair stuck in their throats and choke to death. He said Terriers aren't afraid of his Puli, and he actually had to rescue one so it wouldn't choke to death. In a test conducted with 5 Police Dogs, the dogs fled to the tops of cars. He said dogs have always been used in war, and Gengis Khan used the Ancient Puli to keep the flocks of sheep and goats with the advancing armies. When Hitler conquered a country, he would kill war dog breeders and their dogs.

I will say this critter was large, mellow and constantly rolling or spinning on the ground. Its locks had a couple of distinct "cores" running its length not in the manner of matted dreadlocks. I ceased research on the Internet but here are a few links:

    More 7/14 Pics

July 14 Osprey Nest Lil' Dragon's playtime (GC1BENN)

The Ancient Puli owner told me the Osprey clutch was 2 months from the first hatch to the last and the last chick is still hanging at the nest. Although it can fly, it refuses to fish to feed itself, depending on its parents for food. He thinks it might die.

    For More

    Great pics, T!

I think you're right to be skeptical. If that thing is related to a baboon, then I'm a monkey's uncle. I share more DNA with a baboon than that shaggy professor! Sounds like the guy you talked to likes to weave tall tales. Keep the pics coming!

The Itouch needs internet to use the app and you can only wireless on. I tride to buy internet and you can't.

There may be a way to view GPX files offline on your iTouch, check this thread

    Good luck!

  10. I went geocaching before I stopped off at the zoo parking lot to dance. While I was inside dancing someone popped the door of the car and stole both my 60 CSX and my new Oregon.

Sorry to hear that, FJ. That sucks.

  11. If I lost my Garmin 60CSX, I'd buy another (after I stopped crying of course). Under $300 now I believe.

Feel free to send me the extra 100. You may not be wealthy beyond anyone's imagination... but compared to a US Farmer?! :)

Ditto, can't go wrong with a 60csx, it found me many caches. I now use the Oregon 'cause I like the paperless stuff, but the 60csx is superior in many ways. Happy caching,

  12. So I am coming to the states on a elongated trip. A few weeks in Los Angeles county followed by a trip up the coast through Oregon, Washington and Vancouver.

SO which caches can I absolutely not miss?

I already have noted the APE cache..but I would appreciate any more recommendations. And also any links to West Coast cache ratings could be well used!

    Thanks for your help...

    GamesRmeLife

Just curious, why in the world would you want to spend a few weeks in Los Angeles? I guess I've spent enough time up there that I don't want to visit unless absolutely necessary. I don't mean to beat down on LA, but I think you'd be much happier caching in San Diego. Granted, San Diego does not have Disneyland or Hollywood, but we have a world-class Zoo, Sea World is not bad, great beaches and fewer traffic jams. As for caches, see the San Diego Consensus Favorites. I hope you have a great trip and find many caches.

  13. I am making a forum section for people in San Diego who want to give info on caches that they are hiding.

For example (DTN29129 and bitman posted a note in the San Diego Thread that they where hiding 33 new caches in Black mtn area.)

I making a series right now called Hike-N-Bike San Diego County. It is a series of hiking and biking caches through out San Diego county canyons or open areas. I will hide 5 per canyon and post 2 or 3 at a time unless I hide all 5 the same day.

    Hope you like the idea.

I like the idea of lotsa caches coming out, but I think either the event thread or the SD thread would be enough to meet our needs. IMHO. Cya,

  14. Where do you get your camouflage duck (duct) tape? I know one can order it online, but that is a last resort for me. Wal Mart no longer seems to carry it. Cya,

    D!

Why is ordering it online a last resort? I posted my source of it a while back, but yes, it is from an online place. It blends in very well, but now I'm not so sure it holds up to the elements over time. I buy tons of stuff online. I got all sorts of packages this week, from books to camping stuff to CDs. I'm all about ordering things online. Frees up more time for geocaching!

Mostly I just don't like it (that doesn't stop the wife, though). Maybe has to do with that instant gratification thing. Turns out I found the duck tape brand I like at Ace Hardware, just under a mile from HQ. Thanks,

    D!
