I'm not really sure where this should be posted, but here it is:
I'm using Garmin Basecamp on my Mac and want to upload all the finals I have as waypoints in that program to my iphone 4.
I have the geocaching app, and I'm a premium member. This should be simple, right?
Problem is, Basecamp exports waypoints as a .gpx version 1.1
Every time I try to do an upload to the "saved gpx files" on my profile, it comes back with "I'm sorry, there was an unexpected error" (talk about a useless error message!)
From what I can tell the geocaching website only supports gpx version 1.0 and 1.0.1 - is this correct? Is this my problem?
If so, how can I convert my gpx 1.1 down to a gpx 1.0 using a mac (and not paying money for a program!)?
I tried importing the gpx 1.1 into geojournal, because I know the export would work with the site, but geojournal doesn't import it.
I've tried GPSBabel, but don't at all understand it and can't find much on google to help.
I've also tried exporting as a .csv from basecamp and converting, but that's not going well for me either.
Why would Garmin use 1.1 when (from what I've found while researching) 1.0 seems to be the widely accepted standard, and why doesn't geocaching.com support 1.1 if that's all that Garmin supports?

I agree with you Cache O'Plenty. It should (and common sense denotes it does) mean a couple of weeks offline until you can get out and check on it, replace it, or find it gone, and disable it. What frustrates me is the times when they're TD'd with a note saying "I'll have to check on this one" and then nothing for 6 months... a year... 2 years... The cachers are out every day or couple of days finding new caches, but they don't bother to take 30 minutes and maintain their own.
I have no issue with a cache that has to be TD'd because the location is not available due to season, or vegetation rehabilitation, etc. As long as the CO explains that, it's perfectly understandable. Here in Victoria we don't have issues really with caches that can't be accessed in the winter due to snow or what have you, but for other areas, it's entirely understandable (such as a dock being removed for the season)

I wish that were true, but it seems more than a couple caches were submitted for archiving over 2 months ago and are still "temporarily" disabled. Hopefully it'll happen this time.

What's the deal with people "temporarily" disabling a listing and after a year (or longer!
) they still haven't done maintenance or archived it.In searching a couple mile radius from my own home, I found over a dozen caches that had been "temporarily" disabled for anywhere from 6 months to 2 1/2 years!
I've started marking them with a "Needs Archived" tag, but some of them have already been done months ago with no result. Does anybody know if this sends a note to just the cache owner, or also to a reviewer? Why aren't the reviewers removing these submitted caches? If the reviewers are too busy to deal with this, maybe Groundspeak should institute an auto-archive of any caches that have been temporarily disabled for more than, say, 6 months. If that's not possible, than I'll volunteer to review temporarily disabled caches and archive them as necessary.
Living in Victoria, BC, we have a huge number of caches locally. Cache saturation is somewhat an issue, and it's frustrating to not be able to hide caches in great places because there's a temporarily disabled cache still there that's been defunct for months or years.
That's my rant for the day...

Hey there,
I have a Garmin Oregon, and a Macbook Pro. I use the pocket queries function to create 4 GPX files on a weekly basis (there are over 6000 geocaches in my area). I am wondering if anyone knows of a simple program (preferably Mac compatible) that will allow me to drop multiple GPX files into it, remove the duplicate caches, and then spit out one complete GPX file. I know programs like GeoJournal can do this, but it's loaded down with other features and it a cumbersome program. Is there a simpler, lighter program out there?

Well, after reading Tequila's posts last night I decided to send another email to Troy at Garmin and see if he'd be able to switch out my CO for an OR. I haven't heard anything back from him, so I just tried to call the VP mentioned above and got a recording because it's after hours. If I don't get a response from Troy I'll try the VP again tomorrow. It would be great to get an OR a CO!

I'm hoping not to get hit with any fees crossing the border, and since two friends CO's have conveniently broken down at the same time, we shipped them all back together today and split the cost, saving me about 60 bucks. Here's hoping I see it before I leave for the states in a couple weeks.

They are actually made in China...
So it turns out those aren't the rules. After posting earlier today i sent another email to the support rep at Garmin. Here is our transaction:
"...You mentioned I should contact you
with any further concerns, and frankly, I am concerned. After doing some
research about raytech on the geocaching forums I'm hearing a lot of
talk about poor service, ridiculous wait times, and general
dissatisfaction with the services. I would rather send my unit to the
original manufacturer and am aware that there may be additional shipping
costs associated with this. I also know that RMA's have been provided
numerous times for Canadian customers to process a repair through Garmin
USA. Please do what you can to make this happen. I made the choice to go
Garmin SPECIFICALLY based on the feedback regarding your superior
customer service. I hope that feedback is still accurate. Thank you for
your time and assistance in this matter."
The Reply:
"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to set up
a Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) for the repair. I suggested
Raytech to avoid customs and duties fees. If you would still like to
send your unit into Garmin for repair, that is perfectly fine as well.
Please ship just the unit to GARMIN as follows:
GARMIN International
Dock Door # 18
Attn: RMA # *********** (No, you can't have my RMA number)
1200 East 151st Street
Olathe, KS 66062
I suggest you insure the package and ship it with a carrier that allows
you to track the package during transit in case something were to happen
to the unit while on its way to our facility. Also if you send your
original box you will not be receiving it back and you may lose any
stored data as part of the service process. From the time that we
receive the unit, we should have it back to you within 7-10 business
days."
So there you go. Talk to Garmin and insist on sending it to them and they'll give you the required RMA numbers. Take into account however that you will have to pay more for shipping, and when you receive a unit back there's the chance you'll be hit for GST and Customs fees.

I called Graywood head office and they have nothing to do with repairs and are only sales reps in Canada. According to them, Raytech is the only avenue for repair in Canada. Why can't we ship our units directly back to the US manufacturer?

I'm from Victoria, BC and I'm wondering if there's any cachers out there in the Pearl Harbor area that would like to get together to do some caching. I am a member of the Canadian Navy, and as such, I'm in Hawai'i a lot. I'll be there from June 27th to July 7th, and again July 27th to 31st 2008. I've noticed something very interesting just now with regards to my Colorado shutting off when I try use the paperless caching... all the caches in my area don't work EXCEPT those that are temporarily disabled and therefore have not been updated in my Geojournal. When I tried using the paperless caching originally with GPX pocket queries fresh from geocaching.com the unit displays the page for the paperless, but the squares are blank.. no text. So I tried importing the GPX's into geojournal, then reexporting one GPX into the Colorado... still no luck. But now I have caches which are temporarily disabled on my GPS and they are the ONLY ones that work... I wonder if geocaching.com changed something in the way GPX files are processed, or caches are converted... I don't know... but something somewhere has changed...

I purchased a Map60 CSx in December and it came with a 64Mb card (as noted on the boxes side). I don't know how long ago the store received the shipment though, so new ones could come with the upsized card.

I also experienced an extreme lag in the site today to the point that I was getting time outs on some page requests. Seems to be working great now, but it's happened a couple times in the last few days...

I have a Garmin Legend Cx and a Macbook Pro... I'm wondering how to load maps onto my GPSr; What type of maps I should load; Where to find free maps; any information that would be helpful regarding maps... The standard basemap included with the unit just isn't cutting it, lol.

It seems nobody hear mentioned GeoJournal ( http://www.geoingenuity.com/ ). I am new to caching and have a Garmin Etrex Legend Cx. I've searched thoroughly for every mac compatible software out there related to geocaching and this is one of the most impressive I have seen. It's an easy user interface that does everything you could want for geocaching. It even allows me to drag and drop multiple pictures into my journal of found caches. It's shareware with a 30 day trial which just ended for me and I'm definitely going to invest the money to register.

I'm looking for some advice on programs to use with my Garmin eTrex Legend Cx and an Intel Macbook Pro.
I found geojournal from some of the other posts, but it doesn't give me the ability to add the notes about the cache into my GPSr.
Also, what should I be looking at to load topo and city maps onto my GPSr? Does anyone know about compatibility issues with mac and city scape?
any advice or heads up anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.
