  1. Hi you guys I am a long time geocacher who lost touch when I moved to Maui, its just not happening a lot here. Beautiful, but not a lot of caching. OK so I have two Garmin Hcx Etrex. I know, its been a moment. I need to buy a new unit, and am eyeing the link below. Is this my best bet right now? I have bad eyes, so will this be a step up? And oh, I am not a touchscreen fan. Any feedback welcome. And also, new friends Please? I am taking tomorrow off so I can sit online and make friends and talk story and rekindle my passion for geocaching. I am ready to purchase tonight, so talk to me.... Mods, if in the wrong place, please let me know <3 Garmin GPSMAP 64st, TOPO U.S. 100K with High-Sensitivity GPS and GLONASS Receiver
  2. Hi yall : ) I just got an Oregon 400t and cannot load caches onto it. My Visa HCx is getting info just fine, so I know that the Garmin Communicator Plug in is working fine. When I go to put in cache info into my Oregon, geocaching.com found the device, but when I click on "Write," this is the message I get: Garmin The Device does not support gps user data. What am I doing wrong? I am getting so frustrated, I am this close to returning the Oregon and sticking with my Vista
  3. This has been really helpful, thank you The link you sent me is EXACTLY what I am looking for! Thank you
  4. Yep, I am VERY bad about logging them But its still not hundreds and hundreds! Maybe now I will be a bit more motivated to log stuff.
  5. As I understand it - Yes Also - as I understand it - Yes That's what I would recommend. If you want to use your existing topos (or any of the free ones that are out there) then go with the Oregon 300 in my opinion. Yes - If you load your Topo 2008 on an Oregon 300 you should get the 3D views. Now - with all those answered here are some other things I think you should consider: If the 3D views are the only reason you are considering the Oregon I would recommend getting your hands on a demo unit before buying. It is a neat feature but I'm personally underwhelmed by that particular feature. Are you interested in a potentially better screen and a built in 3MP camera? If so you can wait for the 500, but you'll pay a premium I would imagine over the 300 or 400. I personally don't have a problem with the current screen on the Oregon. I just did a quick search and from what I found on Google it appears that the Oregon 400t isn't avaialble at REI right now (sold out I'm sure as a result of their recent $399 special). I looked around at the Oregon 400t and 300 at other sites and it appears that the 400t is as cheaper than the 300 and more widely available. In addition the $50 rebate on the Oregon expired on 5/10/09 probably causing the recent rush and price slashing on the units. I'll say this - I'm a map nut in a way too. Probably more so when it comes to being on the road. I love my Oregon's navigation features, geocaching features and trail features. I'm very happy with the unit and hope it lasts many many years. I'm also very pleased with Garmins ongoing support for the software and continued support for added features and bugfixes. Thank you VERY much for the answers. I found a decent price on the 400t, not too much more than the 300, so I think I will probably go with that. Do you think the features of the OR are great enough above and beyond the Vista HCX to take the plunge? (I got my tax refund today and it shows ) Thanks again!
  6. Hi yall. I have had a Vista Hcx for almost 2 years and love it. I use the unit daily. I geocache, but not more than maybe once a month. I mostly am a MAP junkie, and love knowing that if I look straight over that hill in between the two trees at the top, what I am facing on the other side. Orienting myself. I want to know what that mountain peak is that's shaped like a castle that I can see from my back porch. How far away it is. All that kind of stuff. What happens if I go this way, what that little secret road is....maybe nab some caches along the way. A little bit for navigation as well, but mostly just satisfying my map junkie cravings My attraction toward the Oregon is the 3D maps...will that enable me to more easily identify what that castle hill really is? How big a step up is it from the Vista Hcx? Is there a car charger on the market for this unit? Also, I have Topo 2008 that I put most of on my Vista, is that pretty much what is preloaded on the 400t? Is that software compatible with the OR 400t? Should I get a lesser version of the OR and load my own software on there? Will it still be 3D? Any input at all would be great, I appreciate it, 'specially since I'm a newbie kind of person round these parts Deb in Southern Arizona
  7. Thanks, yall. This has been really helpful, and I am looking at the 2 sites yall recommended. I always have snacks and stuff for her, which is another reason why I'd like a small backpack or something similar. Off to check the sites now - and thanks for the input, its much appreciated
  8. Hi all. I am new. My 2 year old daughter and I have started geocaching, and don't ask why, buy I feel a need to carry not only my GPSr, but also my scanner, camera and phone. What kind of carrier (with a shoulder strap, preferrably) do yall suggest for carrying these things, being small enough that its not to akward to use while with a 2 year old?
