  1. Isn't that the Komodo Dragon? That's correct! It was thought that they killed through sepsis from the bacteria in their mouth, but new research shows they have an extremly slow, but progressive, venom. Go, go Besem!
  2. A little generous there, I feel! Was watching an amazing documentary called "Life" last night: What is the largest venomous reptile in the world?
  3. Guessing..... Least is 2 Most....Hmmmm...4 or 5? Have seen 2 total eclipses. An awesome experience! Very addictive! Put it on your bucket list! First was in Zambia (what a drive that was!). Saw solar flares (they were pink, that was a shock, (Besem...why?)), Baily's beads, Diamond ring, a nightjar flying overhead! Other was Shingwetsi...overcast
  4. Tom, that's cheating!! That's just knowing me too well! Yes that is correct. It used to be based in Cape Town, but Cape Town became too "magnetically un-clean" and it was moved to Hermanus. You are up Tom.
  5. Where will you find the Principal Magnetic Observatory of South Africa? It measures the declination between true and magnetic north.
  6. I hope that you take a tougher line with power trails. I love caching down in the Cape because most of the caches are to do with "hidden gems". IMHO power trails are are a degradation to a numbers game. I have huge admiration for those who have really high numbers in South Africa....because of the fabulous places they must have seen! (Not because of their "number found"). I have seen a book called " 1001 Things To Do In South Africa Before You Die"....iPajero must surely have done nearly all of them....and so much more! Please, please keep the quality of our caches high!
  7. Come on guys! Know your history!!! He placed the first Geocache. The "Father of Geocaching". Surprisingly he doesn't do it any more......
  8. The easiest solution: Use firefox as your browser' Under "Tools", click "add ons" Search for an add on called "Write area" Install the add on. Restart Firefox Get the edit listing page running make sure "Description is in HTML" box is ticked Now when you right click inside the "long description" box, a new menu option "Edit in a write area" is available. Click on that, and a box will open that lets you do all sorts of fancy things and when you click "save" it will translate all the fancy stuff to HTML for you. Including all you have asked for. You just type it out, it will translate it. Give it a try!
  9. Don't be jealous....plan a trip and come and do a few of our great caches! The baboons may even pop in to say "Hi".
  10. Now this will be an interesting statistic - to see who has the strongest (logging) arm! I shall see if I can manage the SQL for this one; maybe I'll need DamhuisClan's help. I would also be interested in the other end of the spectrum.... Who are our (maybe more than 50 finds) less verbose loggers?
  11. MORE BAD TASTE: A DOCTOR'S JOKE: What's the difference between an oral thermometer and rectal thermometer? The taste! (apologies)
  12. Here in Africa we regularly have caches "Buggled".......Muggled by baboons.....!
  13. I (as a doctor) recently punlished this cache. I wanted to have a bit of fun, created a cache that is a little different, and have a cache with a medical twist. The cache is called Elephant Proctology. It uses the terms anus and rectum in the description. I discussed it at length with our (very sensible) reviewer prior to it being published. He said it passed the test for family friendliness. Did I go too far? What other caches have you done that stretch the limit of good taste?
  14. Nothing stopping you from hosting your own event! I am sure you would get to meet a few of us! Let me know if you want help with a venue. Late afternoon sundowners on the mountain or on the beach?
  15. Yep, that's my cache. If you use the same idea of staying in the car while looking for firetacks on trees, all you need is a safe spot for the cache. I was thinking of a dummy letterbox outside my house with a padlock ( you could make the number of firetacks at each location the numbers needed to unlock the padlock). (The dummy letterbox idea is borrowed from Tomtwogates). Even in Gauteng there must be suburbs where that would be reasonably safe.
  16. You don't HAVE to..... It really isn't a tough walk. Will only take just over an hour if at a fast pace. Hmmm...... "up there again" ..........I am going to Hermanus for the week end....... (Oh, maybe I'll wait till you find Secret Waterfall first)
  17. Spoke to Tomtwogates about this yesterday and headed up there. Found them!........New cache coming!
  18. Ahem, Ohh, now I feel a little guilty. That's mine. Just to qualify, it wasn't meant to be hard. I have a tradition of not giving the hint till the FTF has found it. (This is a nano hidden on a building with a few tons of steel railings on it). I have changed the listing a lot after it was found the first time, including a "if you really can't find it" encrypted hint which spells out where the cache is hidden. Problem with the rating system used is that listings are dynamic and DNFs may reflect history, not current difficulty.
  19. Oh, so that's why it started working on the iPhone! Works brilliantly, chooses good routes!
  20. Thanks for the heads up guys! Think I will stick to the older versions.
  21. Well, we are back home! Otter Trail done and dusted! All we managed to do was Ben Blain. Great recommendation! Thanks!
  22. Ha! Just take a log book!.......Well there goes the biltong! LOL Will do Trev!
  23. Will probably do the same. Thanks J
