The 76S has an electronic compass that is independent of the GPS satellites, and a barometer. The Garmin web site states, "The "S" in the product name stands for "sensors", because the GPSMAP 76S incorporates a GPS receiver, barometric altimeter, and an electronic compass that deliver precise location, elevation, and bearing information..." For my use and experience, those 'features' or slightly increased levels of accuracy have not been relevant for driving or caching. Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. 2. CYBret's tutorial is great. I wish that I would have found it when I was attempting to figure out the software. Geocaching.com should create link to his page on their 'About Geocaching" page. Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. Henry David Thoreau
  3. quote:Originally posted by mrkablooey:BTW, the Sportrak Map ... Be patient, though, as the page shows "Out of stock" but they will change the page periodically and you can order then. Call them. My mom bought the Sportrak Pro from that store. The are limiting what they list as available on the web site to prevent other vendors from buying their complete stock. With that said, I own the GPS V and I love it. It cost $400. But, if in car navagation is important for you, then it is the unit to buy. Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. 4. I agree with the above. The cache owner should have ultimate control. I have adjusted my caches because of posts by the finders. With that said. It would be neat to have a difficutly tally by those who have found the cache. Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. Henry David Thoreau
  5. I agree with wickedsprint. I own the V and the autorouting is great around town, and when navagating to the cache area. I have never had a need to use a magnetic compass while caching (109 found). If I do need a fix on 'true North', I just walk 6 feet in one direction, and there it is. 6. quote:Originally posted by Search1128:... I need to work with two applications, first is spinner or gpx2html and then, second, use plucker to view the "document" created by the first?? Do I still need to have the PQ send me the prc file or simply just the .gpx (that it has been sending all along)? . It took me a little while to configure the programs, but now they work great. Here is what I did/do: 1. Download and install Spinner and Plucker (I don't use gpx3html) 2. Create a new folder on your desktop called 'spinner files'. Inside that folder, create another folder for each of the pocket queries that you run. 3. Take your unzipped GPX file and place it in the appropriate folder that your just created on your desktop. 4. Then you click and drag that file from the folder, and onto the Spinner program icon. Spinner will then start running and it will process the file. The result will be an new a 'spinner file' and a new folder that will contain a bunch of html files. 5. Now open Plucker. 'Add a New Channel'. Choose the 'local file' button, and select the index.htm file that is located in the new folder that Spinner just created. Now go to the 'Limits' tab. Set the Retrieve linked page depth to 3 (if you have a high speed connection to Internet, you can go deeper. The depth refers to grabbing additional html pages that are linked to from the original html pages.) Then select 'Ignore links to a server different from starting page's server' and 'Limit to the exact server only'. 5. Close the configuration, and select 'update the channel'. 6. Hot Sync your Palm powered device, and enjoy. It's a couple extra steps beyond what you would do with Mobi, but the output is worth it.
  7. quote:Originally posted by Stunod:Don't use Mobi. Try using gpx2html or Spinner with Plucker. Works much better! Agreed. I was using Mobi, and I didn't know what all the fuss was about. Then I started using Spinner and Plucker. No comparison. Spinner creates html files that Plucker will display on your Visor. It recreates the cache page, and adds other useful information such as the closest caches to the cache you are looking at, and it lists the distance to it, as well. 8. Please post the coords to the skivies. Just kidding. Extremely funny log. Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. Henry David Thoreau
  9. You can store owner info on your GPS V. Save it as a Waypoint. Call the waypoint 001-OWNER, which will put it at the top of your waypoint list. Then add the phone # and reward information in the Notes Field for the waypoint. Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. Henry David Thoreau
  10. Thanks Mopar for the tip. But I think this goes to the heart of my original request. There are 4 searches that I like to run on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. It would be nice to keep those saved so that I don't have to re-enter the coordinates just because I needed to delete the query for a 'special' one. The dead horse has been beat enough. I'll suck it up, delete, create, and then receive within 15 min.
  11. Point taken. I'll just rename my search when I run it.
  12. quote:Originally posted by Prime Suspect:... When I create a new one-time PQ, I usually get it within 10 minutes. As I understand it, when a new PQ is created, it automatically goes to the "express lane". True. But if you ran a search with the same 'title' the day before, then it does not go into the ''express lane''. I ran all of my searches on Thursday, to lessen the server load, and then I ran 1 of them again on Friday, with new coordinates. It took 5 hours to arrive. So, today I ran that same query, with yet some new coords, and it has not arrived after 1 1/2 hours. So, I put in the same coords under a query that was run on Thursday, but not on Friday, and it did arrive in about 15 min. The first one is still AWOL. Rather than trying to figure out ways to beat the queue, it would be nice to have the option to receive an immediate result. Perhaps I am alone on this one. I would be curious to hear what other members feel about this issue. And with that said, I am off to the caching grounds with my GPX file.
  13. First of all I love Geocaching.com. Thank you for a wonderful site. I think enough of it to pay my annual fee to be a Premium Member. The Pocket Queries are wonderful, but they do require some advanced planning. Usually, this works out fine. But, sometimes a fellow cacher will call with desire to go on a hunt right away. If it is to an area where I have not queried a GPX file, then I might have to wait 1-5 hours for my 'special trip' Pocket Query to be delivered. Typically, I only run each of my 5 queries once per week, but the wait for a new search result can unreasonably delay my caching departure. Can some of the newly reclaimed processing power gained from the implementation of the search result page, be given to the Premium and Charter Members. Not that I'm screaming for more benefits, but the add-ons for those memberships are minimal. Could TPTB create the ability for the Premium and Charter Members to run one Pocket Query type search per day that would result in the relatively immediate delivery of the GPX (or loc and doc) file? Can ya throw us a bone here? Thanks again for all that you do (not kissing up here -- I am truly being sincere). Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. Henry David Thoreau
  14. Burn the witch! I agree, with fly46, BrianSnat, and many others. You are in the right, however, a .10th of a mile is nothing on a 5 mile walk. Is the other cache owner aware of the 'controversy'? If so, are they willing to move their cache? That would be the proper result, but it may not be worth the agitation and the raising of your blood pressure. Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. Henry David Thoreau
  15. It's up by 3 now. 180. As a fellow geek, I find it intriguing. Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. Henry David Thoreau
  16. The update files that you download can be deleted after you run them. They are instulation programs, and they install the update and/or program to the appropriate place on your computer. After the instulation, that file is not accessed when the updated program is started. Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. Henry David Thoreau

  18. Yup. Pictures in profiles are also done with HTML. The images are usually stored on the person's own web site, or at their ISP. The following HTML would result in the image below it. <img src="http://www.tomschmid.com/geocaching/images/greatstories.jpg" width=400 height=210 border=0> Image is for the cache Great Stories of Science Fiction Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. 20. quote:Originally posted by Mopar:... in my caching experience (close to 300 finds once I log them all, covering 5-6 east coast states), _maybe_ 10-15% of them have been ammo cans. I tend to agree with the Chrysler parts man on this one... Of the 44 caches that I have found, 29 with cache containers, only 2 have been Ammo boxes. I like the ammo box, but they are not the most common container out there. Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. Henry David Thoreau
  21. If it were 'just for the hunt' then there would only be a log book. I share your pain. In truth, I am not really looking for neat stuff, but it is a bit disgusting to constantly rummage through a bunch of junk. One thing that would help, is that all items in a cache should be wrapped in plastic or a Ziploc bag. Perhaps, the junkie items were in good shape when they were placed in the cache. 22. Sounds iffy. You should really get permission from the land owner before digging or spoiling the earth. The cache should be locatable by some loose dirt or by moving aside some brush covering, etc. Burying a cache can make it extraordinarily difficult to find, but one of the main reasons for the 'no bury' rule is to respect the environment. Imagine if Geocachers had dug holes for the over 60,000 caches that now exist. Zero footprint is the goal of most caches. Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves. 23. 4.01 worked fine on my XP machine. I am now running 5.0 and it is a nice improvement. 4.13 was also stable for me.
