  1. When the Minnesota DNR heard about geocaching, they banned it altogether, until they can study it and find out how much liability they would have if a cache hunter got hurt and to find out how much environmental impact geocaching has. We (the mngca) are currently working with the Minnesota DNR to get caches approved again for State Parks. "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. 2. From what I've seen, most people take digital pics, of both the mark, and maybe some background in the area. Otherwise, I think it's on the honor system or I at least hope so--I have four that I've found incidentally without my camera that I've posted as finds because I actually did see a disk mounted somewhere, but I didn't have my camera with me at the time to record the special event, so they'll have to wait until I get back to them with a camera for others to know that I was actually there. 3. I have both a military lensatic compass and a Silva Ranger that I use as backups, depending on which one I find first when I walk out the door--both were reasonably priced (the G.I. compass was free), and I haven't wished for any features that they didn't have. 4. I would follow Renegade Knight's advice--if there is another way to the cache, then plant it. I've gone to a couple similar caches where there was an alternate path, but an easier path along the railroad tracks. If there is an alternate path, post the parking for the alternate path, then if cache hunters decide to use the railroad instead, it's their fault if they get busted, and not yours. 5. How about listing last 10 TBs found with a link to expand the list, like with caches and benchmarks? "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other?"--George Eliot
  6. Good Luck!!! Hopefully the Wisconsin DNR doesn't follow the Minnesota DNR's lead in this!!! "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other?"--George Eliot
  7. I have both a military lensatic compass and a Silva Ranger--The Silva was reasonably priced and I haven't needed any features that it doesn't have. 8. º seems to work fine, when I type in °, get a smaller symbol than I do with º. "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other?"--George Eliot
  9. Since Saturday is our wedding anniversary, Perrine and I decided to drive 100 miles from the Twin Cities to Winona, Minnesota, to camp at a state park near there. We hit one virtual on the drive down, and after one night in camp, we went down by town where I got my 400th find. Then I decided to get to one more in the area, and while searching for the cache, I ended up in a swarm of yellowjackets, and got at least a dozen stings before I got out to safety (but I still went and got to the cache before returning to the car). So, aside from the pain, we got to see some great views of the Mississippi from the bluffs 600 feet overhead, and had a great camp-site at a great camp-ground. Perrine even bought a mini cake for us since we forgot to bring our hunk of wedding cake from the freezer. "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. 10. I almost lost mine this weekend--I had found a hornet or yellowjacket nest instead of the cache, but after at least a dozen stings, I still had the presence of mind to make sure I still had all my stuff before I ran screaming out of the woods. 11. Hornet stings hurt like you know what. And did you know, once one hornet stings, you, it releases pheromones telling others to sting you? And if you aren't allergic, you can get at least a dozen stings without suffering any long term affects (other than this @#$&* itching). 12. quote: Actually its more of a Tango since you are going in circles and getting dizzy! Hey!!! I resemble that remark!!! "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other?"--George Eliot
  13. My "I should have given it a rest at 400" cache--on number 401 (GCGMKT), I was looking at likely hiding spots near the coordinates, and felt a sting on my leg. By the time I realized what was happening, I was in a swarm of yellowjackets, and got at least a dozen stings before I got out to safety. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but there I was in about the most pain I've ever been in during my life, and I still went on to find the cache (but after all, I did not go through all of that just to post a purple frowny face DNF). Needless to say, I did find out that a non-allergic person can get at least 12 or 13 stings without suffering any serious long last effects, other than the itching at the bite sites. I've also found out all a person would want to know about wasps, hornets, and yellowjackets through the internet since I got home, both from the m.d. sites and the nature sites. 14. I already drive 20 miles to and from work, and here in the Twin Cities, gas prices can jump up and down 15 cents or more from one day to the next. If I happen to have to gas up on an up day (like today, 1.75 a gallon compared to 1.60 yesterday), I just know that some of my overtime isn't going to be used as effing around money. But give up caching just because of gas prices? It would take more than that to peel my GPS out of my hand. "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. 15. I picked up a bunch while caching last week, and as I was walking back to the trailhead, I started to remember that the guy who invented Velcro was inspired by burrs that he had picked up while out in the woods. Alas, I was unable to come up with my own billion dollar idea, though. "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. 16. The ipaq I bought for storing cache pages also works as a remote--BTW, what was this thread about? "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other?"--George Eliot
  17. So either stop teasing us or launch them already!!!! "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other?"--George Eliot
  18. quote: I noticed a week ago or so that it was about a month outdated... Showed me 20 caches fewer than I'd found... If you log (or logged) finds when GC.com was busy, sometimes Dan's page wouldn't pick them up, and you would have to go to the "Missing Logs" link to update your stats. I had to do so a few times, and the stats were current for me as of last Friday, when I last checked it. "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. 19. 13S is the right grid zone designator for your area--you can google search and find a world map that is broken down by UTM grid zones. This link will take you to a decent UTM map. I guess I'm now one of those that needs my foot surgically removed from my mouth, or, in this case, keyboard. I think the whole Mitsu... thing has me a little sceptical anymore. Anybody else notice that there hasn't been any posts by AG since Mitsu... was mentioned in this thread? "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. What do we live for if not to make the world less difficult for each other?"--George Eliot
  22. 2 ticks imbedded, countless ticks on my clothes since I started eating spicier foods; plenty of mosquito bites; itchweed; and unexplained cuts and bruises. I work in sheetmetal, so it's hard to tell what cuts I pick up at work and what I pick up by crawling through the woods. "Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. 25. I have all kinds of names for the satellites, especially when I lose their signals in the trees, or I get signal bounce, etc., but since this is a family activity, I won't share them here.
