  1. So getting a smiley is the only reason to visit a new and interesting location? Getting a smiley is the only reason to geocache getting a Waymarking award is the reason for visiting a new and interesting location Visiting interesting locations is the key for me. I've never logged a virtual cache because I never found one that interested me. Nor have I ever logged a locationless cache for the same reason. Now I've reached that point with regular caches. I've logged my share of LPCs and other lame caches, but they just don't interest me. My original intent with caching wasn't to find a LPC, a P&G, or magnetic keyholder on the back of a sign or a guardrail. Waymarking on the other hand has opened a brand new door. Now I can go do what I originally started caching for in the first place, which was to go to interesting places that I didn't know exsisted. To get out and to explore my world. It wasn't to explore a parking lot, a dumpster, or the back of a sign or guardrail. El Diablo
  2. I've never tried Walnut, but Cherry is good. El Diablo
  3. Oaks make lousy hiking staffs, their just too heavy. Maple on the other hand.... El Diablo
  4. Yeah, but in the long run, did we really lose anything? Back on topic: Sure! Why not? Hack 'em down with chainsaws! Light 'em on fire! Trample the saplings! Spray 'em with poisons! Death to the Trees!!! And when your done if you see anything left that would make a good hiking staff, please send them to me. Thanks! El Diablo
  5. Whining? Hardly. Inquiring minds want to know... I did go back through this thread and I compiled some stats about peoples opinions and this chart displays it plainly and succinctly. The Chart What's a Caher?? j/k Your chart could be applied to any thread. Whatever a Caher is...it looks like most of them enjoy whatever it is they do. El Diablo
  6. I've got to ask....why would you debark a tree looking for a cache? El Diablo
  7. I highly reccomend looking at Waymarking.com I'm just getting started in it, and look forward to logging my first this week. I've already listed my first. El Diablo
  8. It means that the cache is in a high traffic area, and stealth will be needed to retreive the cache without giving away it's location to muggles. El Diablo
  9. Congratulations, and welcome to our world! Kudoos to those that worked in the "How to". El Diablo
  10. There is. It's call Pocket Queries. However you have to become a paying member in order to get them. El Diablo
  11. If you become a paying member you can use "Map it" to see all caches in an area. Well worth the money considering there is a lot more than comes with being a Premium Member. El Diablo
  12. Depends why you want the maps. If you want them for navigation and turn by turn directions, you need City Navigator. For use on the trails, the Topo maps. You can load both if the money isn't a problem. El Diablo
  13. Just a tip for the future. That's the sort of thing you should mention first. Ya think? blb,you made it seem like it was placed on actual school grounds. That would be a no no. Placed on property that is owned by the school is altogether a different senerio. El Diablo
  14. When you click to upload them, just click the browse button and find them on your computer. El Diablo
  15. A cache that was placed for my 1000th milestone was FTF'd by another local cacher. The hiders tried to email me the coordinates ahead of time, but I was already out caching by the time that email came in, and then the cache got published. Yeah... I have to admit that I thought it was a bit tacky that someone else took FTF on my tribute cache, but it didn't exactly torment me. I've since learned to deal with it through much therapy and help from friends and loved ones. Had a very similar situation when I and some friends placed a cache for our local mega-cacher (2000 finds in about 6 months). We tried to let him get FTF, but it didn't happen. That said, politeness does dictate that on an obvious tribute cache, that you should wait until the guest of honor has found it before you go for it, or at least until you post. After all, it is a tribute to someone other than you. As stated before, I like these type of caches. It gives the community an opportunity to honor a local cacher. I do think that it should be coordinated with the intended honoree. Let them know what you are planning and work with them to see what day would work best for them. Then work with the local Reviewer to publish the cache on that day. As to giving that person a freebie....I don't think so. They are hunting a cache that has been placed in their honor. I'm sure when they log the cache being the FTF was the last thing from their mind. The thought was more like, someone thought enough of me to place a cache marking a mile milestone in my caching history. It saddens me that so many people think being the FTF is more important than honoring one of thier local cachers. El Diablo
  16. Doesn't any average involve more than one factor? How am I giving it enough data to work with? M It involves a lot of factors. The unit will figure it out. Just place it on the spot and let it work. Trust me on this. I've averaged on my own, and I've let the unit do it. The unit wins hands down. El Diablo
  17. The type of unit you need for geocaching only isn't going to come with a touch screen. There are navigational units out there like the Nuvi with touch screen that will work, but they aren't what you need for caching. They are actually a little more difficult to use for caching. El Diablo
  18. Try this. It's what helped me figure it out. Paperless El Diablo
  19. If it's like my 60CSx when you "Mark" a spot at the bottom of the screen you will see "Average", highlight that and hit the enter button and let it do the work. El Diablo
  20. Sounds like an ALR cache to me. I don't get out much, so you'll have to explain ALR to me. El Diablo The honor of having a cache placed in my name would mean more to me than getting to log it first. Far more. I know people like to be part of the community and share the excitement of milestones. That's fine. Asking people to allow the honored person to log it first is fine too. Telling people they are selfish for not playing along, nah, that's a bit too much. We will have to agree to disagree. To me it would be selfish to spoil the fun just because you wanted to be FTF. El Diablo
  21. Sounds like an ALR cache to me. I don't get out much, so you'll have to explain ALR to me. El Diablo
  22. I set up a cache like this back in 2002 and 2003 to celebrate the feats of 4 cachers that were about to hit the 100 mark. I know 100 dosen't sound like much now, but back then it was quite a feat. It ususally meant you had cached in sevral states and went on long hikes. The cache we set up was well known to the 2 cachers in advance and arrangemnets for them to hunt it on a certain day. The original was a very long grueling multi cache that they had to work together from 2 different states to find. One was a cacher from VA, the other from NC. Each had to find the same amount of stages, and the coordinates in those stages were for their counterpart in the other state. Neither could advance until the other had found their stage. They both traveled over 200 miles in the day and met at a location where they combined coordinates to find the final cache. It was a day of fun that involved a lot of cachers from different states. Of course back then we could list caches using false coordinates, so there was no worry of anyone else finding it first. Later the final was moved to a new location and listed as a traditional and then the correct coordinates given. So the bottom line is that I support the idea. To me anyone that attempted to log it first would be like a guest at a birthday party cutting the cake before the candles were blown out. If you are that intent on being the FTF on caches, you need to seek help. El Diablo
  23. It bothers me that I seem to have the same expression on my face as the goat. I was noticing that. Now the question is...what is that look? I have an idea, but I'm not saying. El Diablo
  24. Just go to "Your Account" on the main Geocaching.com page, and then click the link on the right that says "Update home coordinates". El Diablo
  25. As we say here in NC...Hey you! El Diablo
