  1. Don't tempt me to hard Clayjar. Below is the last special cache I set up. If your willing to play with the devil...it can be arranged. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=20201 El Diablo

  3. T3am, Some people may be zoomed in a little too much, and some zoomed out a little too much. Maybe we all need to refocus. As far as future technology improving to the point that we can easily pinpoint a cache...I think it would kill the sport. What would be the challenge? Someone once started a thread at the cost of geocaching. My reply was....GPS..169.00, Backpack..50.00, Supplies for backpack..40.00, Gas..5.00, Insect repellent..5.00, Time spent with my lovely wife geocaching.....priceless!! The point being that there is a trade off. While this sport has its bad points, it certainly has its good points. I believe that if you were to add up the good that vs the bad...the good would win out. I can only imagine the quality time that families have spent together geocaching. Should we minimize our impact on the enviroment...yes. Should we stop all impact on the enviroment...only if we want to stop exsisting. We all have different degrees in which we view this. I believe that maybe you caused some thought that might not have been given before. I'm not sure if I agree on how you started it off, but I do appreciate how you toned it down a bit though. happy geocaching El Diablo

  5. T3am, I will agree with you on the point of placing caches off trail in an area where off trail hiking is forbidden. When we break these rules we give our sport a bad name. There are plenty of areas where we can go off trail without breaking the rules. As far as stepping on and breaking saplings...we part in thinking. There is no one that has more love and respect for nature than I do. However I also realize that all of us effect nature in our day to day lives without meaning to, or even realizing that we do so. I also know that nature has its own way of balancing things this small. I do know that in a wooded area nature will prevent most saplings from reaching maturity without any help from heavy footed cachers. I as I'm sure most do, appreciate your passion for your job and concern for the enviroment. It's the extreme level that you take it to that provokes these responses. Thanks for you post and thoughts. Maybe the next time a cacher is in the woods they will look more closely where they step, which they should.....there are sneaky snakes out there! Happy geocaching. El Diablo

  7. I have placed caches that have had dozens of visitors. The area still looks the same as the day I planted it there. Mother nature has her own way of keeping balance. I don't believe that a family of six or even more hunting a cache will cause any lasting damage to the enviroment. Just as a thought though.....I was wondering if T3AM drove a vehicle while out on a cache hunt? Seems to me a person with such high concerns for the enviroment might want to walk from home to the cache. However if you do drive....please stay below 20 mph in order to allow the insects a chance to avoid being splattered on your windshield. After all they are an important part of the enviroment. Just a thought. Happy geocaching. El Diablo

  9. You might want to try and take a picture of a actual birch tree. Then transfer it to an iron on paper, then on to clothe. Then all you have to do is wrap it around the PVC. I've done someting close to that and it worked great! El Diablo

  11. Most of my caches contain water proof matches. I see no harm in them at all. The biggest argument against them seems to be that kids might find them. Lets see now....caches are usually placed somewhere in the woods and well hidden and require a GPS unit to locate. So the big fear here is that a 6 t0 10 year old might be wondering around the woods unsupervised with a GPS unit and stumble across a cache containg matches? O.K, I'll re-think this. Thinking.....O.K, I thought about it. I still see no logical reason why matches should not be placed in a cache. As far as the temp in a cache getting so high that it would ignite a lighter or a match is very unlikely. The tempature would have to be well over 200 degrees. Just an old farts two cents worth. Happy geocaching. El Diablo
  12. Your post is appreciated Adventuretom. My good friend Hawk-eye made me see reason. The cache will remain in place for good geocachers like yourself and I will deal with the bad ones. I have come to realize that the frustrations of inconsiderate people don't even come close to outweighing the joy I get out of the good people that seek and find this cache. I have also learned not to post on the fourms in the heat of anger. I put a lot of thought in my caches and become very passionate about them, but that is no excuse to blow up at everyone! Thanks once again for your input. Happy geocaching El Diablo
  13. I think the simplist answer to your problem might be to hide the cache were it wouldn't be accidently found. As far as harming the tree....I doubt it. Let me go out on a limb here (no pun intended) trees are very durable. Unless you nailed it in place with a large spike I doubt you would hurt it. Now to the root of it (no pun intended). The general rule of this sport is not to disturb nature in any harmful way. There are a many different ways to hide a cache and protect it from an accidental find without disturbing mother nature. Just a thought. Happy Geocaching! El Diablo

  15. I'm coming home next week guys and I plan on leaving you a little something while I'm there. Look for a cache from El Diablo and his lady. We think maybe we can leave you something that you haven't seen before. El Diablo [This message was edited by El Diablo on May 01, 2002 at 07:30 PM.]

  17. I went to your web page and read the tale from your perspective, I love it! I'm glad you guys enjoyed the hunt. I assure you we had as much fun setting it up as you did finding it. I might have masterminded this, but the credit goes to my henchmen for their innovative thoughts. These guys were a great team to work with! I believe with the ideas that came out of this that Greensboro, Lynchburg and Roanoke will be the place to come in the future for that unusal cache hunt. Oh I forgot to mention, Raliegh....coming to your area soon! El Diablo

  19. A Jeremy bug has been placed in the Centennial Celebration Cache by Triffid. This cache was so thought of that Triffid placed a coveted Jeremy Buddah travel bug in it. This is the only one known east of the Mississippi, and I believe 1 of three that Jeremy has placed. To give everyone a fair chance at it (Greensboro, Raleigh, Charlotte), I will place the coordinates to it late Friday night (wish I could hunt it). Good luck and happy caching!! El Diablo
  20. It was quite a day...for the hiders and the seekers. The first cache they each had to find was actually on their vehicles, a well placed magnetic keyholder. It took them team work and communication to work that one out. The 2nd stage for Hawk-eye was under a rock at the edge of a swamp. Not hard to find...but it had a little surprize under it for him. I was actually on the phone with him when he found it. By the way Hawk-eye, I don't believe the FCC allows that kind of language! The 2nd stage for Triffid was a well place fake plant, but you have to get up mighty early to stump an old hunter like him! The 3rd stage for Hawk-eye was a multiple by Joeybob. He knocked off the first 3 fairly quickly but when he got to the 4th and final he called me and said "There's nothing here but a big rock." After his experience on the 2nd stage he wasn't about to reach his hand in there! The 3rd stage for Triffid was a fake rock. This one caused him some problems. It's my understanding that he re-arranged the entire woods around it! The 4th stage teamed them up in Greensboro where they discovered a tuppeware cache about 25 ft up a tree with no logical explanation on how it got there (18ft golf ball retriever tapped to a 5ft hiking stick). We left them a pile of rocks to get it down. Niether of them could hit the broad side of a barn by the way. Then they searched the woods for a stick long enough to get it down. Their first attempt the stick broke and almost impaled Tiffid. So they did another search of the woods and finally found one long enough (totally missing the retriever left behind for them). After they got the cache out of the tree they found an encripted note that took them foreverrrr to figure out. Did I mention that we were across the cove with binoculars watching the entire show? When they finally found the final cache placed in the middle of the trail (we figured their day had been hard enough) we greeted them with commerative beer mugs and their favorite ice cold beer to fill it with! Thanks to Cache Hunter, Huggy & Joeybob for helping make this a cache hunt they will never forget!! El Diablo

  22. We are all set to go.....all parties have come together and have done a great job in setting this up! I realize now it was easier to dream this up than it was to put it all together..but thanks to a great bunch of Geocachers I think we have put together a masterpiece. Part of me wishes that I were Hawk-eye and Triffid looking for this cache....But the other part is glad I'm not! If you get a chance, please come to the celebration. These guys are going to have have a whopper of a tale to tell...and I'm sure after a few well deserved cold ones, the tales will get better! El Diablo

  24. First of all, let me define ignorance for you...ignorance is temporary....stupidity is forever. I think a Geocacher made a mistake, nothing more nothing less. There is no need for name calling here. Which one of you is perfect? I'm like Hawk-eye, there is no need for a frontal attack here...but some helpful suggestions as what not to do. Seems to me these Geocahers put some thought into their caches..maybe wrong thoughts...but still thoughts. So instead of attacking them, why don't we encourage them into taking those creative ideas and putting them to use in a positive way? Just an old farts three cents worth. El Diablo
  25. Would you guys please see to it that he's back in Greensboro a couple of hours before dark. Thanks for the help down there.....and welcome to the dark side!! El Diablo
