  1. I had one of my caches vandalized, so I "archived" it ......thinking I could "un-archive" when I repaired the damage and re-cached it. But I can't. There is no "un-archive" option. Also, I must have did an "Archive (no show)" because it doesn't even show up on a search anymore. I emailed info@geocaching.com, but no response. How do I fix this problem?

    Thx

  2. How can I determine which benchmarks are most accurate. I did a search and most seem to have Control Data notes that say either:

1)The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.

    or

2)The horizontal coordinates were established by classical geodetic methods and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in September 1997.

I found one that says: The horizontal coordinates were established by GPS observations and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in September 1999.

But it is on an airport runway and therefore inaccessible. Of the three types of control data, which would be best?

  3. I 've used my eTrex Legend for about 3 months and I feel that I know it very well. I understand it's limitations with tree-cover, loss of direction when moving slowly, etc. - but I seem to always be off by 30-60 feet SouthWest of the actual location. At first I thought this might be because of spotty satellite reception at the time or poor terrain; or possibly bad coordinates by the cache-placer. But I've noticed this trend is always present. I've even gone to NGS BenchMarks and been off. And I consistently notice that when I visit caches, and the closest reading I can get is 45 feet, then a few hours later another log appears saying they navigated to within a few feet - that hurts.

I've learned to work with this inaccuracy, by trusting my "where would I hide a cache" skills, and only using my GPSr to get to the general location. But I would sure like to post a log saying, "The coordinates were right on."

Is it possible that my legend needs some kind of Garmin maintenance. I saw somewhere on their site that when a new unit is manufactored it is tuned and tested. Any ideas?

  4. :D That was it! I thought I had tried that earlier, but I must have missed it. The manual does not seem to cover this feature.

Thanks again. I love this forum! I truly believe the GPSr manufactorers should contribute funds to this forum.....this is such a great source of information....ultimately making their products more useable.

    Thanks again.

  5. Sorry, I'm not able to follow you on this. On my Legend (OS 3.50), I can't find an Alternate Setup on the Map Setup page. When I go to the Mapsource Info option (the "i") I get a list of the map pages I have downloaded, I can check or uncheck these, but there is no 'Show All', 'Show US Topo', 'All Maps', 'No Maps', etc.

    What am I doing wrong?

  6. I have Garmin's MetoGuide and TopoMap both loaded on my Legend. I noticed that if I select the MG and the TM tile for the same area, the MG is the only one that shows. So....my question.....

Does it slow down my display speed or accuracy to have a lot of maps loaded? Does it matter if I have them selected or not (checked 'show' in map setup)?

Does it help my display speed if I chooese 'less detail'?

Thanks in advance. Sorry if the question has been discussed before.

  7. My Legend is a little over two weeks old, but I noticed last night....and now it's getting worse.....that I have a bad screen flicker when in backlight mode.

I think I read something about this on one of the forums but I can't find it.

What are my options? Is there some setting I need to adjust (It does it regardless of the contrast level)? Or does the unit have to be replaced? Can I get the retail store (Walmart) to replace it or do I have to ship back to Garmin? Can I get Garmin to ship me a new one before I return this one? I can't live more than a day or two without it, especially with a weekend coming up ;-)

  8. 1 On an eTrex Legend - how can you get it to display such fields as Bearing/Heading/Track in degrees, not letters? For example, how can I get it to display 230 instead of SW?

2 Are there any optimum settings to get it to display tracking features faster? It seems slow to paint screens and draws very blocky lines for tracks instead of smooth curves like my older Garmin 38 did.

    Thanks in advance.

Hey, Thanks. I downlaoded Watcher and it showed that my GPX files didn't have the "Groundspeak Extensions". I figured out that I had been opening the attached GPX files with EasyGPS then saving them. If I just save them direct from the email attachment, they seem to work fine and contain all the data. Thanks again!
