  1. I downloaded the update from Maggies website. Went without a problem and there are a lot of new features. Haven't tried it Caching yet, but some of the new info boxes on the map screen will come in very handy. Edit to add: See Ricstone's post here http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=222824 for more info.
  2. Skelly, the new firmware was released yesterday. I installed it already and it is GREAT!!! To the OP, yes the Triton 400 is a good GPS for Geocaching.
  3. Yeah and it's the same thing Magellan Triton owners want too.
  4. I have tried a couple times to get this to work but it just won't go. Do you have to have a phone that can use geocahe navigator or can it be used on any texting phone? I send the text to that number but it never gives me the codes I need. Any help is appreciated. Never mind. I finally got it to work. It helps if you do things exactly like it says.
  5. Nate, thanks for letting us know you guys are working on these problems. Always nice to hear from someone from the home office about whats going on.
  6. If you already use GSAK, it can be used to export an HTML file (step 3). All the other steps would be the same. Thanks for the tip on the cache memory problem. I was wondering how to fix that.
  7. I also have CA's security suite on my pc. All you have to do is change the .efw to .zip when you go to save it and it will download just fine as a zip file.
  8. To change the coordinate format on the Triton hit menu button then: View-Settings-Navigation-Coordinate System-Enter-Enter- then pick format you want. Hope this helps.
  9. Rattlebars, I've only been using GE for about a month, so I'm not sure how long it's been there. I lucked upon it myself looking for something else. Glad I could help.
  10. You can set Google Earth to show different Coordinates by: Tools- Options- 3d view tab- show lat/long There are 4 different setting options. Hope this helps.
  11. OK. I took the new Triton 400 out caching today and I am NOT impressed at all. We took the old explorist 400 with us just in case the Triton froze, like some people say it does. So here is what I think: Both units locked on to sats pretty quickly. The Triton usually had accuracy below 13ft, while the exp 400 was usually around 20-30 ft. But the exp 400 was a LOT closer to the cache (5-10ft) when it zeroed out. When we could get the Triton 400 to zero, which was almost impossible to do, it was easily 20-40ft off the cache. The exp 400 is a lot easier to use in the field, especially when trying to load in the next GOTO. It is also way easier to navigate thru the different screens on the exp 400. No way to go back from the map screen on the Triton, which is where the compass screen is, and those are the 2 screens you want to use most when caching. Maybe magellan should have updated the hardware to the Triton but used the old explorist software and user interface. At least til they got the new stuff to run as good as the explorist. The Triton froze up 2 times with the Nav error thing, not hard to fix, power off and back on, but very frustrating in the middle of a hunt. The exp 400 just kept going and going, no problems except I couldn't get it away from the wife. In my opinion, if you have an explorist that works, and are thinking about upgrading to the Triton, save your money and wait til they have it fixed. I know the exp 400 I have is not perfect, but it beats the triton hands down. Just my opinions, take them as you will.
  12. I got the Triton 400 3 days ago. I have been playing with it since, trying to figure it out, seems just about everything is different. Going to take it caching this weekend and see how it does. If it works ok, I think I'll keep it and send the explorist back in, if not I'll probablly send it back to them and say no thanks. Or better yet, keep the Triton, sell it, buy a Garmin, send the explorist to them, and be a happy cacher. So far it has been pretty accurate. I have taken a few waypoints: one in an open field, and a couple in different tree coverage. The one in the field got me within 3ft, 7 out of 10 times. The ones in tree coverage were all within 15ft, most under 10. Some pros and cons that "I" have noticed so far: Pros: Mine came with the latest firmware already on it, so I didn't have to mess with the downloads. I love how easy it is to load GPX files right to the GPS. As stated above, it does seem to be more accurate than the explorist that doesn't get WAAS. Cons: A LOT bigger learning curve compared to the explorist. More difficult to navigate thru the different screens, can't just go "back" to some of them. I do think the screen is hard to see in bright light without the backlight on, seems to drain the batteries. Why did they go to AA batteries instead of a rechargable battery pack? The one in my explorist 400 lasted a couple 8 hour days. Just my opinions that I am sure I will update after using it to cache this weekend.
  13. We live in the NW Ohio area and did a cache run to the north of us today. We found 27 of 31, and only 2 needed some kind of maintenance. I also just ran a couple PQ's for my area. In the last 2 weeks there have been 115 new listing within 100 miles and 20 within 50 miles. So everything seems to be ok around here.
  14. I called magellan customer service about the brand new 400 I just got. They told me that the explorist series was made a legacy product in Jan 08 and would not have any more updates. She also stated the explorist series no longer supports WAAS and hasn't since "our" government changed satellites. I complained a little, ok more than a little, about the fact that the box, manual, and advertising for the 400 said it was WAAS capable. She then started saying how sorry Magellan felt about this problem and could offer me a brand new Triton 400, no charge. All I have to do is send in the explorist 400 when the Triton gets here. Was it a good decision to accept their offer? A Triton 400 ($189) for my explorist 400 ($89), plus I'm getting a unit with a color screen and will be able to get WAAS.
  15. Since we started, the only thing that has kept us from caching was a surgery to remove the hardware in my back from a triple fusion. But it only kept us from it for about a month. This addiction is great for rehab, just wish I could get the insurance company to let me claim my travel costs.
  16. I personally don't see where the problem is with the event listing. Delorme followed the guidelines to the letter. Plus, they are a major advertiser on geocaching.com and should enjoy a little extra consideration for their advertising dollar. I'm sure if "Joes Steak House" paid to have an ad on gc.com, they would get the same consideration. If you want the cachers that attend your event to know that "Joes" sponsored your event, hang a big banner there for everyone to see. "Joes" will get a lot more recognition that way, than from one sentence on a cache listing page. Just my opinion.
  17. Thanks for the very quick replies. I kinda thought the "animals" should be listed as traditional, and since the icon for mystery/puzzle caches is the same, I think I will list the "tank" that way. Thanks again.
  18. I have an idea for a cache I have been working on for a few months and am now ready to place. This is not a new concept, but I have seen it listed a few different ways. My idea is this: My granddaughter has a fishtank that fell off the truck on their way home. The tank and all the animals were lost, the animals need to be found and "returned" to their tank. The co-ordinates for the tank would be false and you would have to find all the animals to get those co-ordinates. Each animal would have a part of the final co-ordinates and would be able to be logged individually. Now the questions: 1: How do I list the "tank" part of the cache? Multi or Mystery/puzzle cache? 2: Since the "animals" can be logged individually, how do I list them? Traditional or same as above? Thanks in advance.
  19. After following this fiasco for the last couple days, I have come to these conclusions: 1: Every cache has some kind of agenda: great view, history lesson, great looking lamp post skirt..ect.. 2: Not every agenda is allowed by Groundspeak, therefore not every cache listing is approved. 3: It is Groundspeaks interpretation of "agenda" that matters and that interpretation is subject to change at any time. 4: Geocaching is a game and games have rules. If you are going to use geocaching.com to list your caches, you have to play by their rules. 5: Keystone is the coolest moderator/reviewer around. Not trying to ruffle any feathers, this is just my opinion. re: #5 Keystone has reviewed my caches before, and a little hiney-kissing never hurts. Right? Now that there is an agenda.
  20. I just went paperless myself. I bought a Palm m515 (easy to see outside and the backlight makes it just as easy to see inside) CacheMate, GSAK, And a Premium Membership, all for under $100. Had a few problems getting it all going, but all my questions were answered on these forums. I have an SD card in my Palm and as of today I have almost 3000 caches on it ready to go. Can't beat being paperless.
  21. We were hiking to a secluded cemetery for a hunt once and seen a group of Zombies attacking a couple of girls. They were all a bloody mess. Then we happened to see the 2 guys with video cameras filming the whole thing. It turned out to be a group of highschool kids doing a project for their A/V class. Would have liked to have seen their finished video. Needless to say, we left and got the cache later.
