  1. Congratulations you are the 1,000,000th person to start a thread complaining about missing TB 's. I would expect a Moderator to combine this one with the other 999,999 and move it to the TB forum and then pin it to the top.

P.S. You are aware there is a search function for the forums aren't you.

WOW!!! The OPs first post in the forums and you have to jump on him like this? The OPs question was answered by 2 very helpful people. IMHO this post was completely uncalled for. Way to make new cachers feel welcome.

  2. jholly: thanks for pointing that out for me, don't know how I missed the "map" part.

FairladyNY: You may have me mixed up with the OP. I have actually been caching since 07 and have found over 400 caches. As I have just been shown by jholly how easy it is to misread something, I will forgive you this time. LOL

  3. There have been some questions as to why the page was archived, which I'll address.

The cache page was not submitted in accordance with the Guidelines. Had I known beforehand that the CO had placed the cache using a smart-phone map application instead of an actual GPS, it would have been handled at that time. But that information didn't come to light until people attempting to find it reported that it was as much as .3 miles away from the posted coordinates. The CO wanted to just adjust the posted coordinates to those reported. However, there were two sets of coordinates posted, about 25 feet from each other. I don't know how he picked one from the other, but it seems there would still be a 50/50 chance of publishing bad coordinates. Furthermore, neither I nor the CO really know what they actually found. Just a few days ago I had to disable a missing cache, because people were suddenly logging finds on it, but reporting that they found it 70 feet away (and posting those coordinates for others to use). They weren't finding the cache they thought they did, but instead they found a placed, but never published cache that was put there 18 months ago. This happens more than you'd think. So the people did find some sort of cache when looking for the CO's, but neither I nor the CO know if it's actually his cache. That's why the Guidelines require that the OWNER obtain accurate coordinates for a cache. Relying on FTFers to fix your bad coordinates it not acceptable.

Some have asked why the page couldn't have still been used, once the CO gets accurate coordinates. The cache page could have been retracted, but once people have logged a cache page, that presents a number of problems, and is generally avoided. Also, the cache was reviewed and published specifically for the original coordinates. A change of that distance requires the cache to be re-reviewed at the correct location. That's why a CO is only allowed to move a cache no more than about 500' without reviewer involvement. Like many reviewers, I conduct all review communication via Reviewer Logs, rather than email. But by the time the problem was discovered, multiple people had placed the cache on their watch lists, and any number of people may be monitoring it through bookmarks. So even if I had retracted the cache page, it would have been impossible to conduct a review of the new location, and communicate any problems to the CO in a private and secure manner. Since it was no longer possible to use the existing cache page, it was archived and the CO was requested to submit a new cache page when he had obtained accurate coordinates.

The sentence bolded by me has me a little confused. Can you or can you NOT use a GPS equipped phone to obtain coordinates to hide a cache?

  4. I just received a Rumor Touch for fathers day from the wife and kids. I was wanting to find a way to read/store GPX files on this phone. I would like to be able to start Sprint Navigation and see Geocaches in the area. I wouldn't need to have all the info for the caches, just know there is one there. I have a good hand held that I would use for the actual hunt. I know absolutely nothing about what kind of software the phone uses or if this is at all possible. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  5. I spent from 9am to 5pm watching my grandaughter play in a voleyball tourney. They took 2nd out of 12 teams. I can geocache any day, but seeing them girls play the last 3 games as tired as they were was priceless.

  6. I guess I'm just one of the lucky ones. If I had the same trouble as the OP, I would drop Magellan like a "brick". I never thought about the paperwork messup that way. You are right, I would have been real upset had it been the other way around.

Right now my Triton 400 works well and the "official" WAAS fix from Mitac makes the Explorist a great backup. I will say this, if/when the Triton bricks, Magellan will lose another customer.

I've always thought how funny it would be to see a big group of cachers doing the drunken bee dance. B)

  7.

Garmin stands behind their product. Magellan does not. Spend time on the forums, you'll see. ;)

Don't get me wrong. I strongly lean toward Magellans. I have three times as many Maggies as I have Garmins.

Early of 08 I upgraded from an auto GPS to an Explorist 400. When I found it did not get WAAS I called and complained to Magellan and was sent a Triton 400 as a replacement. It arrived in 4 days, pretty good time for any shipping. The paperwork to return the Explorist was nowhere to be found. I again called Magellan customer support and was told they had nothing in there records and to not worry about it. Maybe I was REALLY lucky, but I would say that is standing behind their product. I would be the first to say that when I first got the Triton, it was a joke. Mitac has done a good job at making it a great unit, for me.

Also, I have spent some time on the forums. I'm on here every day. There is a lot of good information and you gotta love all the funny stuff too. If you're going to geocache, this is the place to be.

Knight, I see we are both from the Buckeye state. Maybe someday we will meet on the trail or at an event.

edit to add that I have no idea how I messed up the quote thingy or how to fix it.

  8. I have had "good luck" so far. I noticed you had quite an ownership timespan difference from the magellan compared to the garmin. I hope you have "good luck" with the garmin.

It looks like you only have a few finds. I hope you like that unit just as much when you hit 1,000 finds. Search the boards, you'll have a hard time hearing anything good about Magellan. I've had my fair share of Magellan troubles. I also went to Garmin although I still really like the Meridian line. I wouldn't even consider calling Maggies tech support. It's a joke.

I think if anyone searches the boards, they will find that even Garmins Oregons and Colorados, as well as DeLormes PNs have all had there fair share of troubles. Multiple software and firmware updates later and all the major brands have improved. The new owners of Magellan have made a lot of changes since Janurary of this year, including their customer support. I have only had to call twice and both times would rate it 9 out of 10 ( I never give a 10, nothing is perfect). They even went back and fixed WAAS on the Explorist line, which made a lot of us owners very happy.

I love my Explorist and Triton 400s, but that is because they work great for ME. I have seen alot of other GPSrs in action while caching with friends and have to admit, each has their own little "thing" that makes them great. Now if we could only get all of them to make one SUPER GPS, we could all spend more time caching and less on here complaining about what we don't like about our current toy*.

*Since the perfect GPS does not exist YET, I guess we will be seeing this discussion come up every Tues , or is it supposed to be Wed?

  9. I think I can answer this question.

    1. If I log a DNF the frownie icon does not show up on my profile page.

    2. My total number of frownies is not kept for me so I don't know how many frownie points I have.

    3. How can any CO expect me to log my DNFs for a big numbers run when it is already enough trouble for me to log TFTC on the ones I find.

    4. Its hard to log a DNF when I always find every cache I hunt.

***This post is all in jest.

  10. You're right, I surrender. I'm doing it for all the wrong reasons...I guess I'll just quit geocaching.

I guess it's not the all inclusive sport I thought, and I'm obviously all wrong for it.

Sorry for making an obviously stupid and ignorant suggestion.

I won't waste any more of anyone's time here in the forums.

    I quit.

And there goes another satisfied forum customer. :)

  11. POLEPOSITION Does your phone have a MicroSD card? If so you can pick up a MicroSD card reader for around $10. Then just pull the card and download the pictures with the card reader. I have an 8gig card in my phone and this is the way I upload/download pics, music, and everything else I don't really need on a phone.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

  12. I posted some questions to a very old topic that for some reason had been brought back to life. That thread was closed before my questions were answered. I was told to go ahead and start a new thread to see if I could get some answers.

First let me explain what I want to do. I want to do a cache like the one in the closed thread, where I would give the co-ords to the location of a micro container that would have a question in it. There would be 2 answers and each one would have a set of co-ords. Each set of co-ords would lead to another micro and question. Correct answers would lead you through 3 or 4 stages and then an ammo can final. Incorrect answers would of course make you work through more stages.

Ok now the questions I'm having trouble with.

    1. I'm thinking this should be listed as a multi. Would I be correct in my thinking?

    2. Would the intermediate containers waypoints be listed as questions or stages of a multi?

    3. I was thinking of using brass tags for the intermediate caches, so this is where I'm most confused. Could the listed starting co-ords, the intermediate tags, and the final be within the 528ft minimum distance?

My confusion stems from the bolded areas of the Cache Saturation Guideline.

    Cache Saturation

Cache containers and physical stages should generally be separated by a minimum of 0.1 miles (528 feet or 161 m). A physical stage is defined as any stage that contains a physical element placed by the geocache owner, such as a tag with the next set of coordinates or a container. Non-physical caches or stages including reference points, trailhead/parking coordinates and question to answer waypoints are exempt from this guideline.

Additionally, within a single multi-cache or mystery/puzzle cache, there is no minimum required distance between physical elements.

Thanks for any help ahead of time. I just want to make sure I get this right the first time so as not to stress my areas great reviewer.

See I'm so confused, I can't even spell "confused". ;) Could a mod please correct my spelling mistake in the title.

  13. This sounds like a great idea and I have the perfect park to do it in. A couple of questions though.

    1. Would this be listed as a Multi or a Puzzle?

    2. Would the intermediate caches be entered as "answer to a question?

    3. Could the starting co-ords, the intermediate caches and final cache be within 528ft of each other?

    4. Since the OP is more than a few years old, has anyone done this and how did it work out?

OK I know that was more than a couple questions, but I really want to try this.

    Thanks
