  1. For the most part I agree with everyone here. I have never once found a cache that could in any way be construed as "trash". The worthiness and benefits of geocaching I do not need to go into here...we all know them...BUT the problem you address is one that I see coming up more and more often. Frankly...The "Cache In Trash Out" campaign, if I can call it such, is brilliant....and I would be hard-pressed to find anything to compare in it's ability to ingratiate geocaching to the general public. I don't think it *can* be improved on. I, myself, have not even ventured onto the Cache In Trash Out section of this board...and YET...I'm doing it. I have found the aesthetics of geocaching so rewarding than of my own iniative I have taken it upon myself to clean up areas surrounding all the geocache sites I have found. Granted..sometimes it's impossible to completely do the job. Good Lord but some people are trashy. But I do haul out some...(maybe not enough, I'm not all THAT responsible), but some...and if we ALL did some then geocachers, IMHO, would be the most environmentally compassionate people that exist....AND I think most do...just my opinion, but I think they do. - JamesJM
  2. First of all...I don't work for Costco...ain't got a thing to do with them. Apples to Apples...(and that isn't always easy to discern, the GPS + Extras is a perfect example)...I have never ONCE seen their prices beaten. EVER...at any time. People keep telling me they are, (beaten that is), but after checking it has ALWAYS turned out to be A) they were wrong or not a comparable product. This perplexes me...because I'm POSITIVE that Costco can not possibly ALWAYS have the lowest prices...but I have never once found an exception...and believe me, I've looked. My house burned down and I had to replace EVERYTHING...right down to Q-Tips.....in the 90 octillion things I priced Costco was cheapest...without fail...every time. Oh...by the way...I'm SURE that isn't an "Absolute Truth"...I'm just saying I have never found an exception. - JamesJM

But You'd think I was stroking my ego because I know so much. http://brillig.com/geocaching/http://img.Groundspeak.com/user/22008_1700.gif http://www.gpgeocaching.com/ Fair enough...I accept...now.. Markwell..did YOU think my post was THAT serious? Just wondering... ya got lots of defenders here and they are like IRATE. <smile> ohh, before I forget...yes Welch, i don't like that; you are anal, and I'm an A$$ to Markwell...there, all bases in one fell swoop. I think you should read my orignal post once again. MARKWELL is NOT AT ALL the point of my message. Markwell is an administrator...no tougher job exists. I've done it. I used him in an attempt to make this topic "light", because I wasn't all that serious....I thought the supercilious-ness of the post would shine through...it didn't. My apologies to all who felt offended by the original post or felt a cumpulsion to defend the administrators. If I could delete it, I would. - JamesJM

  9. This message was misunderstood by almost everyone. that makes it MY fault...accepted. I emailed for the thread to be deleted...didn't happen...so I am taking it out myself. <smile> this doesn't mean you can't yell at me....you can. But the 'point' never took hold and I see no reason to leave it as written. Sorry to all. - JamesJM [This message was edited by JamesJM on May 15, 2003 at 12:41 AM.]
  10. Well now THAT was clever. Soooo, You are on my hate list as well because I didn't think of it. Currently I am going through that process of where, when, and which route? Mine is screwy because I prefer the "off the beaten path" caches. there are quite a few left in Fresno, CA. that I haven't found soooo...maybe, I don't know... don't get me wrong....I LOVE the caches...I just HATE being in Fresno, or any city for that matter. - JamesJM
  11. I beat you by about a week, and yes, I went through the same thought progression. I'm planning my next regular cache at this moment. After finding about 50 I'm getting a feel for how it's done. Now...just gotta get bit creative, innovative, and make sure it's worth seeking. - JamesJM
  12. while geocaching, yes. I'm not worried about battery drain. 90% of the time my GPS is connected to my cigarette lighter. I haven't yet used my WAAS enabled GPS for backpacking....if the drain is serious I probably would not use it unless it was a short trip. - JamesJM
  13. Avoiding it is simply recognizing...(very easy), and going around it. Going around it is not always easy, however. I don't know how you relieve it...I don't think you can. It's one of those fun little things in life you must endure. Yes, there is medication, and some say it works - didn't for me, not much anyway. Another thing - never think you are immune. I used to walk, roll, and frolic in Poison Oak and never got it - UNTIL - I did. Horrible. Since I have been through it several times and never had it effect me, but I know it can. It's like pistachios, sooner or later you're going to get a rotten one. - JamesJM
  14. Here is what I would do....and that by NO MEANS ranks it as the only way, much less the best way. Transfer all your waypoints from the GPS to a new file in Mapsource. Save that file (so you keep all your waypoints in case you ever want them again). Then, in the same file, choose SAVE AS and start a new file. Using a multiple select choose all the waypoints you want to delete and do it. After confirming that you have saved your waypoints in a mapsource file you can then delete ALL the waypoints on your GPS in one quick move and then download the newest file you created in Mapsource....the one after the deletes. Bingo...job done and you still have the other waypoints you can download if you ever wish to This is basically what IBcrashin said but in more detail.- JamesJM
  15. My one cent opinion: First...I'm not sure what you are asking. You are either entering the waypoints manually, in which case you hand enter the coordinates on the cache page....or....downloading them in which case the coordinates are automatic. So there isn't any 'conversion' of the 6 character waypoint names. but enough of that...my one cent opinion....I know nothing of a Rino but if it can connect to a PC then do it, buy the cable if necessary. then get EasyGPS and load them into your Rino that way. It is WELL worth it.... If you have a lot of waypoints to enter it will save you in the order of 5.35 months of time. And even if you have only ONE waypoint, and you are anything like me, you're going to type one character wrong, or number, and then end up in Alaska while searching for the Pikes Peak Cache. With EasyGPS that error possibility is removed...which may spoil a little of the fun. - JamesJM
  16. I'm new to Mapsource myself....so take this with a grain of salt. There are no drawing tools with mapsource, that I know of. However, it may be possible to use the "route" feature to mark boundaries, which would then show up in "red". - JamesJM
  17. You're right, I HATE you. 72 hours and you haven't purchased anything. How can ANYONE have that much patience? I just don't get it. - JamesJM
  18. quote:Originally posted by Markwell:OK let's make sure that it's Geobuddy. When Geobuddy opens a file, you can "Save As" and change the file type. The last one in the list is Streets and Trips. Save it, and it will be a TXT file. Open Streets and Trips and Choose the "Import" feature (I can't remember which menu it's under, but I access it with Ctrl-I). Find the file and follow the wizard. http://www.markwell.us http://www.chicagogeocaching.com My problem was getting Geobuddy to open the file. I finally got it to work last night but I'm still not sure what I did right. I think, maybe, you have to save from EasyGPS as a .loc file? I don't remember...I was in a stupor from struggling with the thing for 3 hours. Anyway..thanks Markwell....I HATE all these proprietary file types. - JamesJM
  19. quote:Originally posted by Gimpy:In Mapsource, go up to the "edit" drop down menu, hit "preferences", then hit "waypoint". There you have the option to view symbol, symbol & name, etc. "Gimpy" --N2GLS-- First thing...don't think I'm saying your explanation doesn't work, it very well may...but I can't make it work. <smile> That preference option you speak of will change the detail for any "NEW" waypoints I create but doesn't do anything to the ones already created, more specifically - the ones I add from my GPS. Even with this option set when I add my GPS waypoints they display symbol&name. I'm confused....I REFUSE to believe it can't be done. - JamesJM
  20. Here's the problem. When I upload waypoints from my GPS into Mapsource they display symbol&name. I don't want that...I want just the symbol. Also...I can find no global setting in Mapsource to view all waypoints as just symbol and not symbol&name. As far as I can see you must change each one individually...a pain in the @$$. I MUST be doing something wrong as this feature would be a MUST wouldn't it? - JamesJM [This message was edited by JamesJM on May 10, 2003 at 10:20 PM.]
  21. Ok...like I'm a 3 year old, (which I'm not, I only act that way). HOW, exactly, do you get GPSBuddy to take an EasyGPS file and convert it and then get it into Streets & Trips? I'm tired of trying. - JamesJM
  22. Jolly B Good sums it up well...it depends. I live in the country and I prefer rural or even wilderness locations...the Topo works best for me. MOST caches, however, are in the cities. I don't have Metroguide but I would assume it would be better for these caches. Either will work for you, IMHO. Backpacking being my first love the TOPO was a must. Were I rich, I'd have them all...might anyway some day.
  23. you and me, Soogans. I too have left letters on the JMT and Pacific Crest. Little different...mine are for my kids should they ever venture into the wilderness. My son did, a few years ago, and found his. My daughters have yet to make the attempt. This summer I'm stashing a couple for my grandkids. - JamesJM
  24. I recently bought a Garmin Etrek Vista. I had narrowed it down to the Magellan Platinum and the Vista. This is NOT a Pro-Vista thread...I don't think the Vista *is* any better, or worse, this is just info for those doing research. What finally swayed me, (just me, this is different for everyone), was the screen resolution. Geocaching is my second love, Backpacking is and will always remain my first love. What drove me NUTS was the memory issue. So what I have discovered is that for me the 24meg of memory is enough, not that I wouldn't like to have more and had the Platinum had better resolution I would have chosen it. I can topo map about 1/3 of Calif with 24meg of memory. (very rough estimate). Which means....I can EASILY topo the entire John Muir Trail and all of the Sierras grids along that route. I haven't tried getting the entire Pacific Crest trail or the Appalachian trail into it but my guess it that it would hold it. Thus: my needs are met as far as memory. I'm convinced that user interface is simply getting used to your model. My vista was an upgrade from a Garmin 12. I HATED the new buttons and especially that 'click-stick'...hated them for about 4 days that is..now I love it. My guess is I would have loved ANY model GPS I had purchased, in a few days. That's it...not much info but perhaps important to someone pondering a new GPS. - JamesJM
  25. I'm sure geocaching, in one form or the other, has been going on about as long as civilization. The first I heard of it regarded ranchers in the west, (I am in the west but I'm sure the tales are every much a part of the East, not to mention the North and South). How many of the stories I heard were urban legend and how many were ligit I cannot say...but I do know of two that are true because I found out by hands on experience. Apparently it was not uncommon for ranchers to mark locations and document experiences. One friend of mine had a grandfather who owned a large ranch in New Mexico. One day while riding the range my friend came across a pile of rocks, obviously man-made. Under the rocks he found a Tobacco Tin and in the tin a note. The note was written by his grandfather...it noted the date, weather, and why he was at this location on this date. In the years that followed my friend found a couple of others...there is no way to know how many his grandfather had cached. Surely many of you have heard similar stories. I found this most intriguing. As much as I enjoy geocaching I think the ultimate high for me would be to come across a find such as this. And no, I would NOT mark it. - JamesJM
