  1. Thanks Jolly and Trippy. I had a bad feeling such would be the case - (the version 4). I don't know if my maps will work with version 4....(that NB and NC thing), and have emailed Mapopolis Support to find out what can be done. Funny, I just received the package, (on CD, I have dial-up and simply cannot download maps), you would have THOUGHT they would have sent the latest version and appropriate maps. - JamesJM
  2. I downloaded this utility and converted a GPX file. Now when I try to open it a window pops up in Mapopolis saying I need the latest Map Viewer from Mapopolis to view this type of file. However, I have 3.27 and as far as I can tell that *IS* the latest version. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? - JamesJM

  4. I'm beginning to wonder if that cable from Supplynet....(probably the same one as at GPSCity)...is EVER going to come out. I've been monitoring the site. It was due the First of Aug, then the 15th, then the 25th, and today it's Sept 22nd. - JamesJM
  5. Being a newbie I procrastinated on marking all my found caches....for me that means..Mapsource, or Streets & Trips. No problem, I thought I'd start a query to do that for me and then simply make the transfer..BUT... Apparently "Archived" caches are not included. Several of the caches I've found are now archived. Anyone know a way around this? AND IF NOT.... I think they should be included in the "I FOUND IT" parameter of the pocket queries. - JamesJM
  6. Not to put a damper on things, because this is a very good discussion...BUT... In this litigious society we live in has it occurred to anyone that read/don't read means absolutely nothing. it does not matter one iota what is in any disclaimer. You can still sue, not sue. The letter of the disclaimer is as pertinent as, well, nothing. soooo, if you're looking to make a buck from geocaching.com on a completely frivolous claim you probably can...just be inventive, and a cad. Better yet, sue a user, (no name, nothing to you). I think we need MORE laws to protect ourselves. Just my thoughts but how about 1 gajillion to cover every single contingency? think of how many jobs that would create.....and that is just the SHORT term value.....because getting BY those laws and maintaining the status quo would like quajallionate! - JamesJM
  7. It belongs to Bill Gates...and as such it is a very good program. Bill makes good programs. Also as such it denies the ability for anyone else to improve on it and make it compatible with anything else. "Fall down in reverance to the Lord Bill Gates". It is an excellent program....but proprietary to a fault...and therefore extremely limited on the evolving world of computer users needs. the BEST news is hackers and pirates who may figure out a way to take a GREAT program, Bill's, and get around the BS. I'm not sure that will happen, I hope it does. - JamesJM

  9. Never read reviews, or trust anyone, or ....whatever. Do YOU think it's a good idea? If so do it, or rather if you find one then snap a pic of yourself. Personally I think it's a great idea....abused, obviously, but with parental discretion a very nice keepsake from ones cache. I find it very hard to believe that ALL the finders are all THAT proud of their behinds. If they are then they need to GET REAL!! You are NOT that good looking. Ummm, not that I'm a pro on A$$'s or anything. Ok, yeah, THAT treatise will work. I was going to say it was crude to post a picture of ones butt on someones cache. I was going too, but then I didn't have the energy to combat the "1st amendment right" of those who will feel incumbant upon themselves to remind me that to do so will bring down civilization as we know it. - JamesJM
  10. quote:Originally posted by Timmythewhite:want to know please. No. Well, that's silly...but there always needs to be a dissenting voice or else 1st amendment rights are being neglected. So....you can all name me when anyone asks "who saved the 1st amendment". Geez, I hope "amendment" is spelled with an "E" instead of an "A" or my place in history is lost forever. - JamesJM
  11. Tis a very good place, Geocaching.com, to do that very thing, IMHO. Most, make that a lot, make that some, make that "they do exist", (since I can't speak for everyone), hides a cache for the enjoyment of others. ALL input is welcome, well, maybe not exactly welcome...ie: "YOU IDIOT, I JUST FOUND A CACHE IN A 60 SERIES 185/60R13 Intertube HOW DARE YOU PLACE ANOTHER?. But my guess is "INPUT" is important. Lots of threads about making BETTER log entries, people want to know what you really thought, did, went through. I agree, it's very important. Why should your input be any less? My guess is that very few will complain...very few, unless they just found a cache in a 185/60R13 sized tube. - JamesJM

  13. According to my calculations, as of now, 92% say "yes" to some degree...the LEAST degree being "Very Rarely". But see, I don't even believe THAT. NO ONE EVER read those things, no one, as in never, ever, for any reason. Sooo the most interesting stat to come out of your poll is this: 92% of geocachers are liars. I think Neilson will back me up on this. - JamesJM
  14. quote:Originally posted by jww54321:My outlook filters out the pocket queries. It considers them harmful to my system. If you click the forward button you can download it when the new window opens. That's interesting...I'll give it a try when I receive another. Thanks! I wonder why pocket queries? Why not the other file attachments I receive? Odd - JamesJM
  15. Ok, this is nuts...gotta be a simply answer but I can't figure it out. Every time I receive a pocket query in Outlook, not Outlook Express, and try to open it it gets deleted...AND NOT to the Deleted folder...I can't find it anywhere. Anyone have any idea what is going on here? - JamesJM
  16. I have no idea, and I wouldn't even worry about it. If the Coord's got me there...GOOD ENOUGH! But it does bring up the AMAZING, which I cannot imagine, fact that for MOST of you state lines are like yellow lines on a road here in in Calif....and MOST of the west, for that matter. You guys cross state lines on the way to the local Texaco Quick Stop. That MUST be confusing...then again, no, not if you're raised there. BTW...that's my next quest....a 'cache' out of State. Of course that means at least 5 hours by vehicle for me...but I think it's worth it..don't you? - JamesJM
  17. I just bought a Dell Axim. I did so because I completely gave up trying to figure out the *best* buy, had no idea what this one does or that one, so I tossed a coin an it came up Axim. Hope this helps. - JamesJM
  18. I am SOOOOOOOOO proud. First...to become a 'top-notch' geocacher you have to be Sir Isaac Newton. The amount of programs you must possess...(not ONE of them can you figure out what it actually does), numbers as the stars in the heavens. This one does this, that one does that, but THIS one does a little of This but not that while the other does a lot of that but is woefully lacking in the this department. Whatever it does one thing is absolutely certain....your configuration will NOT work on your computer-PDA-GPS. Similar to Murphy's law but with far more dire consequences. My suggestion....several Paxils before you begin the process, or better yet.....an entire case of Guiness so that you completely give up the quest. There are more 3 letter file extensions for geocaching that there are molecules in the universe...did you know that? It's a fact. There are also people who know what every single one of them mean and how they relate to each other. <whew> Kind of reminds me that there are also people who can walk on hot coals and not get burned, I will NEVER be one of them. SECOND - didn't think I'd get to it did ya? Jeremy. I belong to umpteen boards....on NONE of them does the administrator read messages on the BBS portion of the site, much LESS answer the messages. Jeremy is like weird. He doesn't even use an alias. "Lord Jeremiah"...or "High Priest of the Cacheicans". And his pic is disturbing.....that quizzical pensive expression reminiscent of your third grade teacher deciding what punishment to give you for sharing a what you thought well timed bi-labial fricative with your classroom friend in the next row. Scary. Well, it wasn't much of a rant, was it? I'm much better with telemarketers. But it was a start. - JamesJM [This message was edited by JamesJM on August 20, 2003 at 02:33 PM.]
  19. I own a Vista so I guess that makes me biased. I don't know....I have no allegiance to any manufacturer. I debated, with myself, this same question. I had narrowed it down to the Plat and the Vista. My *MAIN* use of a GPS is backpacking...so the size and weight eventually won out....FOR ME! The issue I long debated was the memory expansion. The Plat has all you'll ever need...but does the Vista? Well, it depends. What I discovered was that the Vista, with much LESS memory, could still hold every single TOPO I would ever need.....so I bought the Vista. Should I ever decide to backpack around the world I'll get the Plat. Also, the resolution was better with the Vista and I have bad reading eyesight. The answer is as stated by others here....you can't go wrong either direction. If you're a techie then you'll need to analyse and analyse and compare and create an Excel Spreadsheet to figure out the best one. If you want to actually *USE* the GPS then you can't make a wrong decision. - JamesJM

What has finding the "remote" have to do with anything? I know my GPS backwards and forwards. I can dead-reckon with the best of them...and i STILL can't find my remote 90% of the time. GPS is science, it's real. Remotes are ethereal...part of Harry Potter's realm. - JamesJM
  21. I'm a farmer, lot's of private land. I also own a mountain ranch for recreation with many acres. As such...I'd like to add this note, not that it will enlighten anyone - People are absolute slob-pig-sub-human worthless pieces of crap. Ok, so that doesn't apply to EVERYONE...but it applies to enough that it is literally, as in LITERALLY, impossible to allow public access to your land unless you want to start a waste-disposal company. We tried it, failed miserably. YES, it was a minority, but the minority MORE than made up for the majority. As for laws...we live in a litigious society, and it's being supported by the courts. Basically there IS NO LAW. The landowner can be sued for anything at anytime NO MATTER WHAT precautions he takes. So for geocachers that's actually a "good" thing...doesn't matter. No one can do much about the "litigious" aspect...until people and the courts come to there senses..... But the "LITER" thing we CAN act on. Even the "litigious" hate people who liter. Lawsuits? Pffffft...never crosses my mind...because there is NOTHING to protect me. I would allow free access to my land if people would simply NOT LITER. - JamesJM
  22. quote:Originally posted by clearpath:Recently, I downloaded part of a map from the MapSource CD Parks and Rec. My question is... before the actual download took place, it asked me if I was sure I wanted to replace the map that was already loaded on the Vista. It looks like the MapSource CD is divided into various sections that provide greater detail than say the base map that comes with the unit. How many sections will the Vista hold into memory? You have 24 meg, that tells ya a lot doesn't it? hehehe. I have Mapsource Topo, which, I'm pretty sure, contains as much if not more info than any other Mapsource product...including yours. I do NOT have CD Parks and Rec. That said, I can get about 1/3 of Ca. on my Vista at any given time...that's a very rough estimate. BUT....that is TOPO WITH the Sierra's and as such contain a LOT of data. I would think, and I could be wrong, that Parks and Rec's have far less data than Topo maps. Therefore, you should be able to get MUCH more than that. Now consider....1/3 of Ca. That's a lot. I could EASILY put the Topo maps on my Vista of any cross country trip from Ca. to N.Y. 24 meg, in other words, holds a TON of info. If you want the entire USA on your GPS at one time then it ain't going to do it. You'll need the Magellan. That extra memory on the Magellan is a VERY GOOD THING.....but I discovered that I didn't need it for all practical purposes. How many sections depends on the sections and how much info each section contains, (map data) (Sierra Mtn Topos are DATA GLUTTONS). My guess, and I'd bet good money on this, is that for MOST states you can load the entire state with Topo's. For the less intensive Mapsource products, which I am assuming yours is but I could be wrong, one could probably load several States. Also..you ALWAYS maintain the base map, (no matter what you load into the Etrex), which is FAR better than I thought it would be by reading the posts on this board before I bought my Vista. It will NOT get you around a city. Most people live in cities...so they are right...it's not good for that. It WILL get you from city to city easily....WITHOUT any Mapsource products. The base map has my street, and there is NO PERSON on this board that lives in a more remote location that I do. BUT, (always a BUT huh? <smile&gt, that's because I'm in the country. For streets in cities the basemap on the Garmin is terrible, or rather....not good enough. It WILL have the major thoroughfares but forget getting to a cul-de-sac. Hope that helps...I try my best to speak "Novice 'I just wanna know'" but the truth is that I'm not even up to that level. - JamesJM
  23. Thanks for the information. Another search may have proved "gold". http://www.thesupplynet.com/productDetail.cfm?prodID=6889 This would be absolutely PERFECT..power for both PDA and GPS plus data connect. However, it's 'in production'. We'll have to wait until the 18th to see if they come through. - JamesJM
  24. And forget PC-Mobile...I've tried....I don't know WHAT the problem is but I can't order one on-line through them. Been there done that... SOOOOOOOOOOO...anyone know another place to get this cable? I've looked, failed, pouted, looked again, cursed, and finally completely given up. I'm good at that. - JamesJM
  25. Clever concealment sans camo impresses me most of all. don't get me wrong....camo caches are great....love them....but for pure cleverness a great hide, even if the container is an ammo box, or M&M tube, impresses me more than anything. Wish I could give an example, but I can't....that's giving away too much info.
