  1. Insp Gadget - Any store that sells quality hiking boots will carry a full line of hiking socks and liners. I like the merino wool but that's a personal choice. You should look into it....liners with good socks are specifically designed for perspiration...well, and blisters as well, and warmth, hehe, and lots of other reasons. Obvsiouly there is a point of dimishing returns, , when I'm on extended backpacking trips I'll change socks at LEAST twice a day and sometimes three times. I'll wash out the dirty pair and hang them on my backpack to dry. - JamesJM
  2. To be honest, I don't even have a clue what Gor Tex does! I just know I have it on my old boots and my feet are always warm and dry, not sweaty. I have tried tons of boots and to me the most important thing is to be dry! My feet sweat so much..... Are you using both liners AND hiking socks? It's a must for me. Any perspirations should be handled easily with liners and good socks...the Gore-Tex will do nothing about that, it's for keeping water OUT. I'm not saying Gore-Tex isn't a good thing, BTW. It works, to a degree. It's just that in my opinion it works no better than well prepared leathers...(waterproofed). I have had Gore-Tex boots get as wet as any boot. - JamesJM
  3. Good advice in this thread. And it's true...every individual will find comfort in a variety of boots. On the backpacking forums this topic is unending. Having hiked and chatted about hiking for many many years I think I can say with some degree of accuracy that VASQUE boots are the most popular. I have never owned a pair of them. It took me 4 tries at well over $100 a pair before I found the perfect boots for me...and now the company is out of business so I hope the pair I own last a VERY long time. The best, and really only, way to go about this is to visit the stores and try them on...the RIGHT WAY. IOW...wear the same socks you'll be wearing while trekking.....stand on an incline to insure toe space (probably nothing more important than this) and well as heel movement. Just an 'opinion' but I think Gore-Tex is somewhat overrated but solid leather uppers is worth it for extended or heavy duty hiking. - JamesJM
  4. Well, I have the CD version. My reasons were mainly connection speed related. I have dial-up, no broadband available in my area, so downloading individual maps from the site would have been extremely time consuming. I also enjoy the convenience of having everything right here ready to go. However, if you have broadband then I can see how the download version would be ok, especially with the $ savings. - JamesJM
  5. Click, or touch, and hold down on a cache, any cache, to bring up the options. choose LIST OPTIONS. Choose SET CENTER COORDINATES and type in your home coord's - or wherever you wish to measure FROM. Distance will then be measured from the coords you enter. You can also choose a cache, once again any cache you want, then click and hold to bring up the options and choose CACHE OPTIONS and then SET AS CENTER...the list will then measure distance from that waypoint, or cache. - JamesJM
  6. Microsoft Outlook doesn't like GPX files either. I can't even download them! I have to get the .ZIP file now I'm not saying a virus can't exist, but my first guess would be that Yahoo doesn't know what they are an in the name of 'caution' reports it as a virus. I could be wrong. <smile> - JamesJM
  7. I hope you get an answer to this. I'm not sure what "built-in storage" even is! I have almost precisely your setup, but with even more programs, and I haven't had this problem. However, all my maps are stored on a 256 SD Card. In fact, I store ALL my data on the SD Card...GPX files, Photo's, Maps, MP3's, etc. - JamesJM
  8. My GPSr's have always been right on the money, at least according to various speedometers. I don't know...I would have "guessed" a GPSr to be more accurate than a speedometer. - JamesJM
  9. More and more I read about encounters with Highway Patrolmen, Police, Sheriffs, etc...while geocaching. It doesn't surprise me....during the first dozen caches I found I was questioned by Highway Patrols on 4 of them. My theory, and I think I'm correct, is that a lot if not most caches are right next to roads and highways and the officers are simply wondering if you are having trouble. Makes sense.... because how often do people stop these days? Frankly I used to be one of them. If my destination was 200 miles away only car trouble or a desperate need to urinate would make me pull over. Now, oddly, or perhaps logically, I don't travel ANYWHERE without at least looking to the side and wondering, "Where does THAT road go?"...."What is behind THAT hill?". And the most fun of all...."Let's take the 150 mile route instead of the 39 mile one". But I do expect more Law Enforcement encounters. People just don't stop and look at rock piles these days...or small juniper groves...or Historical Markers for that matter. Don't believe me? The last place a Highway Patrolmen asked me if everything was ok was when I was READING a Historical Marker. - JamesJM
  10. Tis' true. I'm sure I COULD keep up with all the software, and extensions, and conversions, but I do not. Instead...I downloaded ALL of them. Now I transfer/convert by hit and miss. I KNOW I have one that will work and it's just a matter of time til I find it. It's easier than remembering, or, at least, doesn't require as much mental output. So I Babel-EasyGPS-EasyMPS-Watcher-GPXSpinner plod my way through it all and somehow come out clean on the other side. I couldn't explain it, (this faith thing), but it works for me. Bet I'm not alone. - JamesJM
  11. If it's simply out of view right clicking the task bar and choosing one of the display option will reveal it. I doubt it however, like you I think this sounds weird. - JamesJM
  12. wow, I thought I was picky about this. Usually what I do is mark and then walk 100 feet away, or a little further. If my mark takes me back to within a few feet that's 'good'. I'm done. If it doesn't I remark and try again. I put more into it if I'm under trees as I do lose a good signal pretty easily with my Vista. - JamesJM
  13. quote:Originally posted by Prime Suspect:I just wish it were more plainly labeled as a test thread. _ Yeah, well when I posted that I certainly had tongue firmly in cheek. Testing is a bit of a problem, I suppose. I know InfoPop does have a version where a post "preview" is possible. This solves the testing problem, as long as people USE it that is. - JamesJM
  14. amazing, absolutely amazing. "how to post an avatar" is STILL getting replies...since, I think, correct me if I'm wrong....the Roosevelt administration...the first one. In fact, it is seldom that I log on and the 'most recent' post is NOT in that thread. I don't know...I'm just not all that turned on by Avatars. Some are cute, I admit that....Jeremy's is scary, I've mentioned that. BUT... If I were to guess which thread topic, "anchored or not", would dominate the board since Woodrow Wilson, (oops, I think I said Roosevelt didn't I?), it would NOT have been Avatars.....yet on second thought... there exists no "Medical Breakthough 3" Guaranteed Growth" threads...so I suppose it isn't all THAT surprising. - JamesJM
  15. I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO cautious about getting as accurate Coord's as possible. WHY? There ain't a single person here that won't say, "It's the hunt"....yet we are ALL desperately trying to be more accurate! ???? Seems odd to me, but that's just me. For...truth be known, I am just as hyprocritcal, maybe more. I want PINPOINT accuracy but I don't want ANYONE walking dead straight and standing directly on my cache. - JamesJM

You will need a Garmin GPS unit to help you find or mark cache locations". You learn something new every day. I had no idea this game was restricted to one brand of equipment. Sue them! I am 190% sure you will be able to find a lawyer to take your case. Add some stuff as well. I don't know. "I couldn't find my in-labor pregnant wife because she wasn't a geocache". I think it will work, heck, I KNOW it will work...with the right lawyer. - JamesJM
  17. quote:Originally posted by GEO Dog Cacher:If your a premium member and get the pocket querys. You can import the GPX file directly into access. Change the extension to .xml and the file can be imported. I was able to do it easily with Access 2002. There were some error but I think you can fine tune those out. Yeah, except for one thing. You cannot get "archived" caches in a query. Do NOT ask...apparently the reason for not allowing them in a query will bring down the board and geocaching as we know it. (You won't get an answer). Also...I add "Pics"..."Stories"...my own "Ratings"...lots of stuff to enjoy with my family. NO Query will do that since you can't log it. - JamesJM
  18. quote:Originally posted by Geo Twins:We have sent in about 4 email requests to have a cache unarchived that was archived over a year ago and we found the cache still in place the former owner has never email back back to us. Groundspeak change the profile of this cache over to us (Geo Twins)When we asked to adopt this old cache. We are unable to edit this cache with Unarchiving it first. We need to keep all past Geocachers that have found this cache listed on it. Waypoint (GC174) THanks Geo Twins Just an observation: Why even have archived caches viewable? You can't download them in a query...I asked about that recently and the answer I got was....."pfft"...well, not literally, but that's the gist. So why have them? You can view them if you click on the them BUT NO VIEWING VIA A QUERY!...no, no, that's a no no. Archived caches are a complete mystery to me. Kind of like the Dolphins who have all the talent in the world and never do squat. - JamesJM
  19. Sort of on the theme of your other replies...."sort of". <smile> When I placed my first cache I was SOOOO deligent in getting PERFECT coordinates...as if "perfect" was achievable. Now....pfffft. REally! Yes, I do as well as I can but "in the area" is MORE than good enough. In 'geocaching' terms I am a novice with barely 100 finds....yet in all of those only ONE did my GPS show "dead on" positioning. I have found a few nearing 60 feet in distance from where my GPS said it was. I'm sure others will take this opportunity to say, "60 FT? I walked through 2' feet of sn....I mean.....I was 3,497 feet away". That's the fun, when you think of it. "Finding" is the key. - JamesJM
  20. quote:Originally posted by Gulf Coast Riders:Good idea, but I don't think it will work for me, I've re-booted several times since discovering the error message. - Paul "If everyone is thinking alike, then no one is thinking." Benjamin Franklin Well, I don't know, Paul. I did the same. I rebooted several times, hot and cold, with no results. Only when I did a system restore did I find success. Whatever it takes I wish you luck. - JamesJM
  21. quote:Originally posted by Gulf Coast Riders:Well, perhaps I spoke too soon. The next time I tried to auto connect, the error message: "Trying to connect to serial port COM 3" came up. The Autodetect under communications Options is set for COM Port 1, but no matter what I try, the auto detect reverts to COM 3. Any suggestions? Paul this happened to me last night. I use Windows XP....I did a system restore to the previous day and all was right with the world once again. - JamesJM

We are literally getting to the point where they are going to have to engrave, "Not To Be Used To Stab Eyeballs" on table forks. - JamesJM
