  1. What part of briansnat's response didn't you understand?
  2. Oh, I meant in the form of censoring forums posts, banning users using the scripts, things like that. I know they can't actually block the scripts, in the same way they can't block c:geo itself. Groundspeak "could" set up some subtle web format change to take place automatically weekly, couldn't they? Some sort of change that would hardly be noticed by traditional users but would schmucker a scraper like C:Geo? Just wonderin
  3. Yes I know that jholly, in fact I state in my post that the official apps are to be excluded from my comment.
  4. I think any app that requires you to enter your Geocaching "userid & password" is probably guilty of this TOS violation, other than of course the officially sanctioned apps. The app uses your Geocaching credentials to do it's grabbing/scraping. Maybe consider that as your test to know if "your app" is OK?
  5. If you like to jerk peoples chains you can always add some "wild goose chase" reverse-spoiler photos. You know, a shot of you kneeling beside the the cache with a lake in the background.. where in fact there isn't any water for MILES of the actual cache site
  6. I have an iFinder Pro & it was amazing accurate when it was new. It was getting satellite "locks" inside my house long before similar Garmins/Magellans finally caught up Just make sure your coordinate format is set correctly, the datum is WGS84, and the batteries are charged.
  7. Ok well as it happens I just bought an Oregon 450 and downloaded the OSM maps for Ontario Canada which is where I live. I loaded the whole province & everything went great. Except I can't search for addresses at all the 1st thing it asks is which State/Province I'm in & I key "Ontario", it comes back with "no data found" or something like that. Did you then go into OSM and corrected it for other newbie users? That was only a guess of what the problem is on my part.. I don't have a clue why it behaved that way.. and I haven't yet tried that same route now to see if it's still the same. At least the auto-zoom is now working Bottom line though, OSM is awesome for the price! But it's just going to be a place holder until I can buy Garmin City Navigator.
  8. A general purpose book on GPS & how it works, or a specific book in a particular brand/model GPS receiver? Yes they're all out there.
  9. No, Geocaches are stationary. "Travel bugs" are small items that you grab from one cache & place it into another. They aren't "tracked" during the transition, but their trail can be followed (from cache to cache to cache)
  10. Actually a felt tip pen is best when trying to write logs onto soggy paper Add to Gitchee's list, an actual mechanical compass, whether or not your GPSr has an electronic one.
  11. I don't know about your side of the pond - but the free OSM maps of the UK certainly are routable, and searchable, and as good as - if not better than - the street maps on Google Earth. "123 Main Street", though, is going to lead to problems until you also tell it what town you're heading too Maybe there is a pond side difference, thanks for pointing that out. A while ago I tried the openstreetmaps and no it wasn't successful in searching for addresses, and yes thanks I know you have to include the town name. Others here too have noticed that while those free maps are routable they aren't searchable. Has that feature been added? What I COULD DO is move the cursor over to my destination pick the spot & hit go. It would route me no problem using that pattern. Another problem I've noticed, I told it to route me to a destination I KNEW was directly ahead of me and the road I was on took me straight to it. But the GPS was insisting I make a U-turn to an alternate road. It kept doing that until I crossed a spot where (I assume) the mapped road must have a small break in it, & the GPS thought it was an incomplete road. This wasn't a problem for me then because I knew the area well, but a newbie traveler would have been really screwed up. And the roads in question were plenty old, so it wasn't a case of "new construction not yet complete" Like I said, freedom can have a price
  12. No. All GPS brands/maps are islands to themselves, no transfers possible at least not without a HUGE amount of effort. Yes you can get "free" maps for Garmins, but don't think there isn't a price to pay for them. They are created by community support and although they are quite good they can have "problems". For example the routable maps are NOT searchable, you won't be able to tell your GPS to find & route you to "123 Main Street" It'll most likely come back with "location not found". Yeah I know nowadays everyone wants everything for free, but there is a price for freedom. Wow that'd be a great slogan for a bumper sticker
  13. I use a bluetooth GPS for my netbook that doesn't have GPS built in. Yeah it works great, and it'll probably improve satellite reception on your phone, depending on which phone you have. Your battery life will still suck though, having the bluetooth link activated.
  14. For Geocaching? Naw all you'll ever find in a Geocache are little trinkets, like keyfobs, ski pins, small toys.. Girls are much too big to fit in there!
  15. Yeah a tutor is great if you can find one! While looking though, check out youtube there are often excellent tutorials that might be enough to get you going.. check it out! http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=garmin+60+tutorial&aq=f
  16. Hey! What'd I do? Why do I have to watch out??? Watch out, because you're going to be getting a LOT of unexpected visitors! You better stock up on munchies & swag!!
  17. You know you can probably join a cycling club too, even if you don't own a bike.. ..you can just run alongside the other cyclists but it would probably be easier to just buy a bike!
  18. or pick your vacation destination because a certain sought after cache is there .. or you wind up canceling your "Southbound" vacation plans because you're currently holding a Travel Bug that wants to go "East"
  19. Congrats on the new smartphone. Which app to use for Geocaching? Name any of them & you'll get lovers & haters of that app. How do you decide? The official Groundspeak app is cheap enough to try. It's not free but at least it's legal and this place supports it Now someone will chime in why it's not so good.. & so on
  20. Local Geocaching is awesome enough, but wait'll you discover you can tie the pastime in with vacation trip planning.. Planet watch out!
  21. Yeah I hear the "htc ouch" has some serious design problems Just kidding, lol. So you're not even complaining about app itself, just that you can't SEE it while outside? Sorry but capacitive touchscreens are like that, and pretty much all smartphones use capacitive touchscreens. Try cupping your hand over the screen, and/or turn around & use your shadow, does that help?
  22. Market share??!? I had to Google "Samsung bada" just to find out what it was
  23. Hi dustymax I see 5 photos in your gallery. Is that them, or should there be more? Nice photos btw
  24. Google Earth accuracy is surprisingly unreliable in some places, and pretty good in others.. it's anybody's guess which is the case in your area
  25. Another HUGE advantage with the Garmin City Navigator maps is, address information is searchable!! The free "openstreetmaps" version does work well but if you're trying to find "123 Somestreet, mytown" then it'll come back with "address not found". If you DO need to be able to route your car with your 60csx then you'll want to be able to search for addresses!
