  1. Does anyone have experience with GPilotS? What do you use it for? I just figured out how to move WP data from my GPSr to my PDA using GPilotS but I'm also looking for a way to move WPs the other way. I can't get CacheMate to export to my GPSr with my setup so I'm wondering if I could get WP data into GPilotS from my computer and then move it into the GPSr via that program? If not, is there another Palm application that would work for me? In summary, I'm looking for a way to export WPs from my Palm to my Garmin.
  2. Check out Suunto also, quality Finnish workmanship and design. I had one for many years and gave it hard use until the mirror fell out so I Emailed the company about a new one and they offered to replace the mirror for NO charge. Incredible in this age.
  3. Thanks NightPilot. I set up the Temp file and GeoClipped a site into it. It is in a ".tmp" file format and nothing happens from there. It doesn't install itself to the Palm DT nor can I install it as the Palm installation file formats do not include .tmp files. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.
  4. I'm having the same problem. I apologize for my computer ignorance but how do you make such a directory; is it just an empty folder at that address? Thanks in advance.
  5. I just got this message too, a few minutes ago. It's intimidating as I wouldn't know where to go with those involved "instructions".
  6. This may be an unreported bug on Ver. 3 beta 2: from the Export CacheMate PDB File page to the Help box brings up Export to Fugawi Dialog Box. Great program, I can't imagine the hours of work that have gone into it. Thanks. frefel
  7. Get CacheMate; IMHO it's the easiest to set up and gives a very useful display on the PDA. Read the excellent documentation that comes with the download and that on the smittyware.com web site.
  8. I am starting to work with Gsak. I successfully downloaded a GPX PQ into it but then I want to send it on to Plucker or CacheMate. The problem is that the resultant "Cache" file that Gsak generates from the Export command is a bunch of HTML and GIF files that have to be opened individually; I can't browse to single cumulative file. What am I doing wrong?
  9. I understand that these 2 programs translate html text to a format that can be downloaded to a Palm PDA. Relative to potential uses in geocaching, does one serve a purpose better than another or have certain advantages? Thanks.
  10. Thanks you 2 - now I get it, especially after seeing the example.. Sorry about the typo on the title.
  11. What happens when the box to add a WP to the log is checked? Is this to contribute additional WPs to "refine" the location? I did a search on this question without finding an explanation. I don't want to try it for fear of messing up somebody's cache page. Thanks.
  12. Today I downloaded GSAK and began to work with Watcher also (with difficulty). My question is: does Watcher offer any important features that aren't included in GSAK? If not, it would save me attempting to learn that format. Thanks.
  13. I recently got a Visor-Garmin interface cable, but without any instructions. Can anyone help me with how I would go about making a functional connection? Do I need to install any software to my PDA (I run CacheMate and have a Garmin Venture)? What are some of the possibilities for using this connection? Thanks in advance.
  14. Me too for CacheMate! As an example of the quality of the program I just received an update today (free) and this happens every couple months or so demonstrating the commitment to ongoing improvement and addition of features.
  15. I have CacheMate and love it but the documentation is a bit weak for someone just getting started. You need to convert the files from the GPX format that you got from Geocaching to a format that can be installed on your PDA. There is a CacheMate program installed within your desktop CacheMate called CMConvert that does just that. When you open Convert and go find the GPX file you have previously saved to your computer it will make the conversion by following the steps on your screen. You give that converted file a name and then use the Install program of your Palm desktop to find the converted saved file on your computer and then just install it and HotSynch it to your PDA.
  16. What I mean is that in fragile areas the cache not be placed such that digging or disturbing plants are required to locate it and that be explicitly stated in the description. The areas I'm refering to are not like urban parks which are designed for human activities; these are natural places of scenic beauty that other people visit and expect to see untrammeled. If geocachers are disturbing the area they are going to raise hell and for good reason in my opinion. As for the animal nonsense, I've spent a lot of time in the woods and I've never seen more damaging effects from even bears than from just a few uncaring humans. This isn't a matter of evolution but rather preservation of the few particularly scenic natural areas that are left (at least where I live) and which are often where caches are placed. Voluntary efforts are good but I think more stress should be evident in the cache placement rules.
  17. I have been doing some geocaching along the central Oregon coast and have arrived at some sites hidden in the woods. One site is described as being "in the ferns" and another "under some struggling vegetation". Both locations are within a very fragile ecosystem of plants and mosses and in order to find the cache it is necessary to dig and root around the ground, inadvertently destroying the ground cover. In this rainy climate this will inevitably lead to erosion and permanent damage. No one person is likely a big problem but the cumulative effect of many can overwhelm the ability of the system to regenerate. I suggest that there be a requirement that caches placed in such areas state that NO DIGGING, TRAMPLING, PROBING etc. is required. If we do not institute such rules I guarantee that our sport will feel the wrath of those trying to protect such delicate areas and it might result in a prohibition of caches in all National Forest land, for example.
  18. Thanks Bret; that was just what I needed. I wonder what else resides in the background of the site that I haven't stumbled on yet? Where would I go to access such info as it is not obvious on the home or FAQ pages?
  19. Where can I learn about the meaning and use of the myriad face and figure symbols that adorn the Geocaching and Groundspeak web sites? Thanks.
  20. Is there a way to quickly see the number of one's "found" caches without having to look thru the "my cache page" list of logs?
  21. Thanks you'll. I print an occasional useful tip that would be hard to remember because of it's length. I assume there is no problem with that.
  22. My printer runs very slowly trying to reproduce the blue background of the GS Forum pages. Is that color beneficial to the site page?
  23. I was asking that question as I was still using my old Handspring Visor for the usual functions that consumed about a third of its 2meg memory and then when I got into Geocaching I decided to continue with it as a learning tool till it topped out, then move into a higher capacity Palm. Result: I'm still happily using it, downloading all the caches I need into both CacheMate and Plucker on the Visor, with room to spare.

    Cachemate

Thanks; it's working now. I'd swear I did all those things to no avail before but the computer never lies.

    Cachemate

Thanks but; I did that, so I assumed that the cache wouldl then move into a "Found" catagory, separate from the rest of the listings, but in fact nothing happened. What is it supposed to do?
