  1. When I first loaded it up in my 4150, I couldn't get any notes to stay with a file, so I just used it for information purposes only. Then my display cracked, I sent it in for reparis, they lost it somewhere, so I got a new one. When I reloaded the program, notes now work. I wouldn't suggest using my exact method, but maybe an uninstall/ reinstall would work. I am using version 1.1R.
  2. I can't imagine doing BM hunting without a PDA. I have the datasheets for every county in South Dakota on my computer. They actually will fit on my 128 mb memory card if I would delete some MP3s. Then before a trip, I just make sure that the right county files are loaded up. I can upload way more benchmarks to my GPSr than I really think I will look for. Then if I decide to change directions or have more time than I thought, there is not problem looking for a few more. Even if I happen upon one on a road somewhere that I haven't got a waypoint for, I have the description with me. By the way, I found out the hard way on a trip to Europe that you should get an armor plated case (rhinoskin) for your PDA.

    Bmgpx

There is no install. I have directory called BMGPX with the program in it. I save all of my datasheet text files to that directory. I go to a DOS prompt and navigate to the folder. cd\bmgpx Then I type bmgpx datasheetname.txt The gpx file with the same name is then created in the same folder.
  4. I think the problem would be with the accuracy of the altitude readings with our consumer GPS receivers. Waypoint marked and shot with a transit would be much more accurate. A transit and stick could be rented at almost any tool rental place. Learning how to use it might be another matter, but it's not really that hard.
  5. Sure a 118 yr old mark is old, but by my math, 2004-1866=138. Even more impressive.
  6. Caching was my only father's day gift. My wife and I took off at 10 this morning and did a 340 mile loop south and got 4 caches, 3 benchmarks, 2 ticks and 1 picture and coordinates of a silo her father's company built in 1952. Great day.
  7. This is my submission. PT0373 Designation Hiway. Sully County, South dakota. Lake Oahe in the background.
  8. Let's see. . . SD, MN, IA, IL, WA, ND. That's 6, but if we add countries, I have the UK and France too to make 8.
  9. They are called star drills. The slow guy holds the drill and turns it slightly after every blow. The strong guy pounds on it with a sledge hammer. The boss watches and gives advice.
  10. It probably depends on the management of the park. Around here, most of the caches are on US Army Corp of Engineers land. I wanted to place two, so I asked even though the state of South Dakota does most of the recreation management. That was 2 months ago, and I am still waiting on approval. Government speed, I guess. I think you should always ask just in case the location you have in mind doesn't fit with their policies.
  11. I'm not sure the commercial units are much bigger, just more accurate and expensive. The Trimbles have a bit larger screen than what most of us use, but they will cost $3000 or more.
  12. My 100th happened to work into a trip to London. I used it for a great multi call Bloomin' Heck.
  13. I use ArcView 3.2 as a hobby. We have a state license for ESRI GIS software for all the schools in South Dakota. I am trying to learn ArcGIS 8.3. I wrote an article on how it is used in schools for Today's Cacher.
  14. It looks by the description, that you are looking for underground marks in cylinders next to the road. Often after 30 years roads get widened and marks close by get covered or destroyed.
  15. I just upgraded 8 Legends today from 2.36 to 3.60. You get a lot of new features with that kind of jump.
  16. That's pretty specific. About the only street in Butte any longer is Montana.

    Found

There are about 20 benchmarks with 5 miles of K4 or "Krazy Keeko's Killer Kache". Even a distance and direction from the cache would help.
  18. I've only done one, about a month ago. I didn't use a light. The only illumination I had was the backlight on the GPSr and my PDA. No moon. You have to walk slow, but it makes for an excellent challenge.
  19. Somewhere in your Garmin GPSr setup, you should be able to choose the Lat/Lon setup and change to the type you are looking for. On my Magellan, it says DEG.DDDDD.
  20. I use GPXSonar and GPXView on the Pocket PC. EasyGps and load a .loc file and save as a .gpx file.
  21. From central South Dakota 4285 miles to Percy Circus in London. Right now the nearest unfound cache is 75 miles away. I might as well take a long trip to hunt.
  22. This picture was taken while benchmark hunting, but . . . And I always wear a helmet Carleen.
  23. Sorry, but considering all the info you have provided, there may not be much help. Coordinates, description, markings?
  24. I've found a few of these usually next to a plowed field. One the casualty of an irrigation project. In a pasture.
  25. I'm looking forward to a 2setter or a 5setter. Shoot, even a 51setter would be good.
