  1. Ahh good. I was hoping that that was the way that damaged caches were handled when they were getting "this cache needs to be archived" logs... I mean, I assumed that steps would be taken so that cache corpses weren't being left out in the wild, but it is good to hear from J & TPTB on the issue. Click to view the ToeCam
  2. quote:Originally posted by Criminal:RT, you only need a stamp pad, just ink up your big toe and "stamp" the logbook right? Of course, you'll have to keep taking your shoe off....... *lol* I picture everyone holding the log book with only the tips of their fingers once they know that I've had my toes on it. That's a pretty good idea though, really... hehe Click to view the ToeCam
  3. I'd rather those coordinates stay hidden unless clicked on, or somehow otherwise selected. I mean, the idea of having the field there is great - I'd probably include parking coordinates for all of my caches. However, when seeking caches, I'd rather not have that info appear on the main page - right when I click to view the cache. I'm more of the type that would rather scout the location myself, so having the parking coordinates forced upon me would be something I'd rather not have. I know, just having them posted along with the cache coordinates isn't really "forcing" them on me - but they'd be there, I'd see them... I mean - it is just kind of a "spoiler" to me, and I don't think anyone really wants a spoiler shown to them without asking, right? So yes, having the option to put the parking coordinates in is a good idea - but, imho, only if the viewer doesn't HAVE to see them if they don't want to. Click to view the ToeCam
  4. You've got some good points there, ClayJar - I can see what you mean about the attributes being inclusion attributes, rather than exclusionary. Hmm - I wonder if those are real words. Anyway - I see your point, about how if these attributes are to be used more for search options and the sort - it'd be better that have special attributes that tell what the cache DOES have. It is a difficult thought process for me to put into words, unfortunately... but yet, I can see how the options would be more valuable if you could search for caches that are only accessable by boat, or only accessable with climbing gear, or only accessable with scuba gear. If the attributes were like I suggested in my post from the other day, it wouldn't work well with the search engine options. My idea would work well for those who are just concerned with icons and info on the actual cache page, though. I think I'm better off sitting back and letting the programmers hash this one out - as when it comes to database applications, and how to get the most use out of them - I'm not the guy to ask. 6. I have a few times... usually when I'm on the bike, I go wandering out into the countryside - not really knowing where I'm going or where I will end up. I think I might have found one or two caches this way - but mainly I took the GPSr along on the bike to have a track I could plot over a map when I got back home, to figure out where the hell I was. 7. quote:Originally posted by Sissy-n-CR:It's kind of hard to side with a guy who claims that: - GeoContainers are inherently trash. Caches may _become_ trash after a while, but this is a new cache. I kinda worry about caches that get abandoned being left out in their hiding spot, becoming trash... but the more I think about it, the more I realize there are geocachers who care enough about this sort of thing and they'll scoop up any deceased caches and have them archived if they've turn to crap. I mean, I'm not really that much of a do-gooder, but I drove my butt all the way down to SE Ohio on a pretty cold day - just to gather up some geoslop that had been destroyed by the elements, just because I didn't want it sitting there waiting to become an eyesore. I figure if I was willing to do that, there's probably always going to be someone willing to go out and scoop up dead caches if they need scooping. The only concern I have with that, now, is hoping that trashy caches are allowed to remain listed on the site long enough for someone to find it and reclaim the remains. I've seen a few instances where caches have been reported as being in horrible condition, along with a log indicator of "this cache should be archived" Hope it doesn't get archived from the site before it is actually removed from the location. Argh - I should have started a new topic for this one, eh? heh Click to view the ToeCam
  8. Fwiw, most people consider the term "buster" to mean "punk" "wuss" or "poser" or "lamer" as in... "Man, get rid of that .22 and get yourself a REAL gun... I mean, what are you, some kinda busta?" or something Toe talks street, y0. WeRd. Click to view the ToeCam
  9. I agree with the spirit of what you are saying... I enjoy when a cache takes me to a location that I might not have known about otherwise, or a location that is particularly unique or pretty. I purposefully placed my very first cache in a completely crappy area though... it was hidden behind a half vacant mall, in some thick growth near a highway edge. Hard to explain, but it wasn't a pleasant place. Some people even mentioned that they thought people may have lived in those bushes from time to time. It was never really bothered, and only archived due to signs being posted to discourage trespassing. After that one, I really did start putting more thought into where my caches go. I currently have several hidden - none of which I'd realy consider to be "throw away" locations. I like taking people to local parks, or scenic places - without making them too terribly difficult. 10. Wow - seems that the stamps are a popular thing, eh? All I've got is my wheresgeorge stamp... which I actually don't use much anymore. I should probably drop that in a cache some day if I can figure out where it is. But I didn't really think about having a signature stamp for logs. Probably because I've only found a few dozen caches. I wouldn't mind having a menacing toe stamper. Click to view the ToeCam
  11. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy (Admin): quote:Originally posted by Rubbertoe:Plus, people that take pics with their camera at arms length kinda look like dinks, if ya ask me. Heh. My wife just bought one of the new Sony DSC U10 Cyber-shot cameras which is the size of a large pack of gum. It has no viewfinder.Doh! When I said they "look like dinks" I meant it in the most kind, endearing way - of course. Just kidding... I've done it a few times myself, I suppose - but I've also seen people nearly knock people down or fall over curbs while they are moving around with their camera at arms-length - setting up the perfect shot. I try to stick to only reviewing shots on the screen if I think I messed up, like you mentioned there. There's the first negative of that A101 that I've been hyping, too... it takes 2 AA batteries - doesn't have its own recharging thing like those Sony cameras. I wonder if those NiMH batteries are all that people crack them up to be. Click to view the ToeCam
  12. quote:Originally posted by ClayJar:"Exercise Care", "Use Caution", "Be Careful", "Warning", "Danger", and the like. (The point being to alert not only parents but also the less adventurous.) Well, folks like me would check that box for every cache that they've hidden. None of mine are terribly dangerous, but I'm all for telling people to be careful. At any one of my caches, someone could twist an ankle, get bitten by bugs, or lose their keys in the brush. So, I'd always have "use caution" checked. Imho, a selection like that is probably too subjective and most likely overused - making it not very useful. quote:The only other thing that I'd probably add would be "Fee Required". Many of our best caches in Louisiana are in areas where either an admission fee (state-run parks and area), a parking fee (some camping areas, etc), or even a boat launch fee (avoidable if you canoe, but not if you motor).Yup - that is definitely one that I think we can all agree upon. There isn't one of us that wouldn't be a little miffed if we show up for a cache without realizing that we had to hand over a few bucks. Not a big deal to most, but I think everyone would like to know beforehand. quote:Regarding cell phone coverage, we'd have to have an attribute for Cingular, one for Verizon, one for T-Mobile, one for Nextel, one for... But it *was* a nice idea, if only it were possible.I don't have a cell phone - I wouldn't know if there was coverage or not. My list would all be things that exclude, rather than include. I wouldn't have "dogs allowed" or "drinking fountains available" or "public restroom here" - I think the better way is to EXCLUDE, assuming that things are there/allowed unless specified otherwise. I mean, that is how most people hide caches... without asking, most assume it is okay to place a cache in a park or area unless it specifically says otherwise somewhere. Here's what I'd have: PETS NOT ALLOWED NOT WHEELCHAIR ACCESSABLE TRAILS FOR FOOT TRAFFIC ONLY INACCESSABLE WITHOUT SPECIAL EQUIPMENT (see description) NO VISIBLE TRAILS UNAVAILABLE DURING CERTAIN HOURS (see description) That last one is for those folks who enjoy hunting at night - since many caches are in parks that are closed after dark - I think it'd be used quite often. I'm not sure what to do about you ATV / bike folks... I've been to a lot of parks, and while I've never seen a sign that says bikes are prohibited, I'm not sure that they are allowed, either. *shrug* Anyway, there's my 2 cents... the extended version. Click to view the ToeCam Doh! I just noticed that the "time of day" thing was already covered in an earlier post... heh
  13. I'm assuming all of these will be optional checkboxes or whatever... I mean, something that people can check if they know, but people don't HAVE to check a definite "yes" or "no" when it comes to dogs, kids, pay to park, etc. I mean, if I choose not to check any of those options - I don't want it to make my cache look like I checked "NO" on all of them or something. The whole idea of all these extra options just makes me nervous, with the way many people seem to have a hard enough time hiding a cache, posting a picture, or logging a travel bug. I'm looking forward to more information on how these new qualifiers will be implemented. Click to view the ToeCam
  14. That is one of the first things I learned to NOT use when I got my first digital camera. Batteries last INSANELY longer when you don't use that little LCD screen for lining up your shots. Plus, people that take pics with their camera at arms length kinda look like dinks, if ya ask me. Oh, and we've been testing out that A101 in various situations and we're extremely happy with it. Can't believe it was less than $90 for a quality 1.3mp camera with movie mode. Click to view the ToeCam
  15. I would rather the difficulty be in "getting there" rather than actually finding the cache at the spot. I mean... I would much rather hike a mile through rugged woods, to find a cache hidden in the base of a giant tree stump or something - rather than drive up to a parking lot and have to look under every bush in a line of shrubbery to find a thumb sized micro. Gimme the 1/5s over the 5/1s any day. Click to view the ToeCam [This message was edited by Rubbertoe on December 05, 2002 at 08:59 PM.]
  16. It must not have been an obvious national park designation, since the cache was approved by someone... unless the approvers just missed this one when it passed through. (looking at cache page now) Oh wait... the map clearly shows it as being smack dab in the middle of a giant area clearly marked "national park" - heheh kinda funny how a cache will not be approved due to the lack of a log book or something, yet a cache that is obviously in the middle of a national park gets right on through. It'd suck to be an approver. They don't get much slack. Click to view the ToeCam
  17. Any more info on this blurb would be appreciated... was it a local or national broadcast? I agree - geocachers should follow park guidelines... hell, ALL people should follow park guidelines. But, if you have any links or something, please share. Click to view the ToeCam

  19. quote:Originally posted by Planet:It could be gone in the first storm. And, I believe that would be, uh, TOMORROW! (If you live around the east.) Tides vary, wind blows, sand is very unstable. Well, there is a cache which appears to be buried on the beach - although nowhere near the water, and it seems to be doing pretty good. I think this kind of "buried" cache is okay - although I'd think it'd be hard to spot without some sort of identifying marker nearby, like this one has. Just wanted to post an example that shows it has been done, with some success. Click to view the ToeCam

  21. It pisses me off when people give me attitude in a thread, when they don't really need to. I mean, dadgum - I find it funny that they took a bug 1700 miles in the "wrong" direction, considering the bug wants to go west to Hawaii... I made a little post about it, and when I saw that they were getting upset - I just kinda made light of the situation, letting them know that it wasn't that big of a deal to me, and ended the post with a smile. They still come back with their pissy little "well, we will have to avoid your bugs" comments. e@tm3pLs,kThNx. Deform My Head!
  22. quote:Originally posted by Tzan & Isbah:We'll have to avoid your bugs. Someone pee in your cheerios this morning? I don't care if you get my bug and send it off somewhere far from its goal... I already said that I take bug ownership lightly - I don't expect people to always do what the bug wants. I was just letting you know that some people will get pissed off if you do that. I think if my bugs saw you coming, they'd avoid YOU anyway. Deform My Head!
  23. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy Irish:Although she lost an arm in a battle with demons, she's still on her quest to meet Sarah Michelle Gellar. Hehehe... tell me that wouldn't totally creep her out. Some stranger waiting in line along with other folks asking for pictures and autographs - then this stranger suddenly pulls out a mutilated buffy figure adorned with dog tags and offers it to her along with a quick, and most likely, confusing explanation of geocaching and travel bugs. *laugh* I can see the fear in her eyes just thinking of it. I agree, though... SMG = a+ Deform My Head!
  24. McToys get a bad rap. Sometimes a McToy is better than a dollar store trinket... it is just the dirty used McToys that turn people off, I think. Deform My Head!
  25. quote:Originally posted by Tzan & Isbah:Would you get upset if that happened to one of your bugs? If you look at the logs, I'm also not the only one to take it East. No, I wouldn't get upset... I'd just be disappointed if my bug was getting closer to its goal, and then someone snatched it up and took it 1700 miles in the opposite direction. But then again, that is the nature of the beast - people will do what they want when they find a bug, so being a bug owner means that you have to just accept it. I know some people that would get their *** chapped about something like that - I've gotten myself to the point where I understand I'm lucky that they move at all. Deform My Head!
